Preface: I don't play jazz or even listen to it very much. So I am partly speaking out of ignorance. But my limited experience has suggested to me that jazz might be characterized (not defined) by syncopation, improv, complex chords, and maybe even some non-modal tones. This piece certainly contains all of those.

Just say you don't like it. and offer concrete musical reasoning, not the simplistic put-down of "this isn't jazz." This musician is not going around claiming that his music is THE definitive jazz. this is evidently jazz, not of course that straight-jacket approach one may see in bepop. The beginning is definitily jazz, in middle part more of chromatic tonality, but generally this improvisation is better than standard jazz - it is more creative

#1 you can tell a man behind a piano not to get emotional. Say that to keith jerrett who sometimes abandons his seat # 2 yu bash this guy but again would take your hat off to again, keith jerret, chick corea, and brad Mehldau. Just like he said, they do the same thing in their intros. I can tell that the ppl who make those comments dont listen to that kiind of jazz bc b4 i even read any comments i heard bits and peices of those jazz musicians in his playing. Do your homework

The layed back feel and freedom that it has wich makes it jazz, and the 7th chords and stuff might add to it. So what it its not like the jazz we are used to hearing, id also say its more like the style 'smooth jazz'. And he is improvising with some jazz chords, and for the fact that he is improvising which makes this soo broad that he can play whatever he want with some jazz chords and call it jazz. I think he also might have played a blues scale oncve or twice somewhere in there. Wat do u thnk

I'm afraid I beg to differ. The word Jazz is also used today to categorise anything that appears to be an improvisation. This maybe that, but no more. There is very little that represents what Jazz is in this piece let alone the serious lack of any form. This is just a few ideas repeated/bashed around on the piano that basically go nowhere and he's called it Jazz because it's somewhat improvised. Couple of 7th chords & a blues scale I can show you in a Beethoven sonata. He's no Beethoven ;-)

Lack of tolerance, I have no qualms with that and I happen to know Brad Mehldau and Keith Jarrett work extremely well among many others. I cannot compare your performance with these in any respect. I will perhaps one day pop some recordings up on here, and as your analogy of a classroom, I do think that YouTube is indeed one big educational classroom. My point on the loose term of the word 'Jazz' still stands to this moment. Keith Jarrett's work is a spin off of Jazz, as is Brad's.

I'm all for improvisations, as I do them myself, but I would be hard-pressed to call this jazz. Jazz is already so underappreciated by today's youth, it really doesn't help when you call this jazz and give people the wrong idea about what jazz really is.

I like the artistry, not the label you've put on it. It's just not jazz.

Those are JAZZ CHORDS for the piano, you just do not realise the Jazz because usualy jazz is scales and faster rythem.

It's not a question of scales/chords or fast/slow; for what I know, "Jazz" strictly means 1) Swing and 2) particular armonic construction and voicing. This is what I think :)
