hej, that tequnique reminds me of Fazil Say. For those who don't know him, he's a great musician... search for his paganini interpretation. Inspires me every time I hear it in a new way ... =) love to improvise
Why dislike? The guy's sharing his music with us, when I saw the strings being muted I thought 'okay', because he's simply using his instrument in a different way, not the wrong way
What a musician you are!!! astounding talent and I can only wish I could play a fraction of what you can. Those complex chords and voicings continue to inspire me to keep trying. Thank you!!!
I love this young man, his style is excellent, his expression is superb and his hands are made for the ivories....a wonderful Jazz (piano as opposed to organ I guess) Improvisation
whether this theory wise is all correct and amazing or poor and uncoordinated it still amazes what it can do to the mind. When you dont have to think about how hard it is to play or how skilled the musician is. Thats when you know you have someone amazing infront of you
Preface: I don't play jazz or even listen to it very much. So I am partly speaking out of ignorance. But my limited experience has suggested to me that jazz might be characterized (not defined) by syncopation, improv, complex chords, and maybe even some non-modal tones. This piece certainly contains all of those.
I want to be the jazz police too! But really, regardless of what anyone likes to call it, I like it! I think it is a good idea to always turn off comments for anything pertaining to music. For the same reason I wouldn't bring a recently finished painting into the Dollar Store or an ICP concert to ask opinions, I wouldn't care what most people had to say about my music.
Hey people. If you dislike some music, it's insincere to make a stink about how its "not jazz." Just say you don't like it. and offer concrete musical reasoning, not the simplistic put-down of "this isn't jazz." This musician is not going around claiming that his music is THE definitive jazz. He's obviously pretty sincere in what he is doing here so why not reserve your scorn for pretentious folks???
Love your stuff dude. Really great harmonies and craft of composition. Thanks for sharing! Next time you should just call this a polka/ hip-hop/ jazz improvisation just to piss off the haters! lol.
Checkout "seapsking playing some jazz music" show me some love peeps! i dont know how to read any music and i onlyplay be ear! let me kmow what you think! thx
this is evidently jazz, not of course that straight-jacket approach one may see in bepop. The beginning is definitily jazz, in middle part more of chromatic tonality, but generally this improvisation is better than standard jazz - it is more creative
EST played at my school about 12 years ago. He got upset over some loud kids and threw us all out. He shouted something like "We come to give you music and this is how you repay us...GO TO HELL ALL OF YOU".
Next time I saw him was on TV when he got a Swedish Grammy.
BTW you play really good sounds a bit like Jarrett at 5:00.
#1 you can tell a man behind a piano not to get emotional. Say that to keith jerrett who sometimes abandons his seat # 2 yu bash this guy but again would take your hat off to again, keith jerret, chick corea, and brad Mehldau. Just like he said, they do the same thing in their intros. I can tell that the ppl who make those comments dont listen to that kiind of jazz bc b4 i even read any comments i heard bits and peices of those jazz musicians in his playing. Do your homework
i agree. he sprinkles little bits of each one out there. But the point is to be original and work off of the ideas of others. I guess most people are expecting the very common jazz, or rather, the kind of lounge piano sounding jazz. There are most definatly differnet styles out there and different forms of jazz.
What's with all the figthing? Regardless of similar musical style origins, Respect between players, etc, Why can't we just get along and enjoy some music? This was wonderful, regardless of what style/who's playing it.
skaterpunktop3? What exactly is a Jazz chord progression? II-V-I perhaps? A couple of Dominant 7th seventh chords in there maybe? Is that what makes this Jazz? Or is it because of the fact this it kinda improvised? I'm curious on your take skaterpunk!
The layed back feel and freedom that it has wich makes it jazz, and the 7th chords and stuff might add to it. So what it its not like the jazz we are used to hearing, id also say its more like the style 'smooth jazz'. And he is improvising with some jazz chords, and for the fact that he is improvising which makes this soo broad that he can play whatever he want with some jazz chords and call it jazz. I think he also might have played a blues scale oncve or twice somewhere in there. Wat do u thnk
I'm afraid I beg to differ. The word Jazz is also used today to categorise anything that appears to be an improvisation. This maybe that, but no more. There is very little that represents what Jazz is in this piece let alone the serious lack of any form. This is just a few ideas repeated/bashed around on the piano that basically go nowhere and he's called it Jazz because it's somewhat improvised. Couple of 7th chords & a blues scale I can show you in a Beethoven sonata. He's no Beethoven ;-)
Your statement is quite egotistical, whoever said music doesn't progress and change overtime. Just because somebody came up with new ideas doesn't dignify an insult.
I can already see by the way you generalize the music you lack artistic vision. I happen to think all music is beautiful, people generally like to classify music in catagories they are accustomed to listening to. I ultimately agree with Skaterpunktop3, either you are annoyed that somebody can be creative or your just ignorant.
Heya DigitalViscosity, your post is really stupid, inaccurate, senseless, grammatically inept; & in which the way you summed me up saying I lack artistic vision is spoken by mere musical-immortals like yourself. Go an profess to those who you may impress with such impertinent speak and attempt to influence with your lack of pretty much everything, especially musical knowledge.
I find it funny that you tell a Piano Performance student, that I lack musical knowledge. Everyday I constantly write music that breaks all rules of "standard" music. I at one time posted my music with marginal success, then I found out people like to rip off work.
By the way being a Grammar Nazi on youtube is old and stupid. But if you can't accept musical progression, then definitely won't understand that language is a measurement of prevalent thoughts and feelings of an age.
I think your attacks on other people here shows a lack of tolerance for other's opinions. Have you actually heard modern jazz piano and the intros of the likes of Brad Mehldau or Keith Jarrett?
Now, I do not compare myself to those masters, but you seem to have the handle on what is jazz. How about posting a link to your playing, You should be willing to post your playing.
BTW, this is Youtube, not a classroom or performance hall. This video isn't a treatise on jazz piano, just meant for fun.
Lack of tolerance, I have no qualms with that and I happen to know Brad Mehldau and Keith Jarrett work extremely well among many others. I cannot compare your performance with these in any respect. I will perhaps one day pop some recordings up on here, and as your analogy of a classroom, I do think that YouTube is indeed one big educational classroom. My point on the loose term of the word 'Jazz' still stands to this moment. Keith Jarrett's work is a spin off of Jazz, as is Brad's.
stand still wtf, dont get that into it, this is a youtube video, you still play incredibly well just dont get all intense on me from two camera angles
I'm all for improvisations, as I do them myself, but I would be hard-pressed to call this jazz. Jazz is already so underappreciated by today's youth, it really doesn't help when you call this jazz and give people the wrong idea about what jazz really is.
I like the artistry, not the label you've put on it. It's just not jazz.
There are no "jazz" elements in my opinion.. sure, its improvised, and very well, but hey.. call it something else.. its more like 'new music' but catagories dont really exist in reality..
i, as one who do mostly improvisations whenever i sit on a piano, kinda hate when i make a really composition just because i know i'll never play it again :( that's the sad part of improvisations
nice job tho. that's how music is meant to be played imho
BRILLIANT!! I must say that to create an improv with individuality takes style and that means that you have a hell of a lot of style! You show many signs of musical prowess as you glided across the piano like as if you were swimming on the piano!! You showed excellent jazz skills and mood and most of all it showed ORIGINALITY I loved the way you make stacatto notes by holding the strings!!! EXCELLENT WORK!!! 5/5 if there was 10000000000000/5 i would have pressed it!
You have a rich musical personality to draw upon to create something like this off the cuff. My palette is somewhat limited but I'd appreciate some comments on my improvisations. I hope your business is flourishing, I bought your video series over a year ago, unforfunately procrastination took over. Maybe you can help me. Mike Holme.
more like new age improvisation... there are no elements of jazz harmony whatsoever. Can't just call something jazz if it's got improvisation... there's a lot more to it than that. This is simply new age... just listen to all that material around 7:00... not jazz.
it's like watered down melodramatic ear-candy with very little harmonic or rhythmic sophistication that usually has an emphasis on improvisation... it's what i did in 6th-7th grade. Then, after growing increasingly bored i got into jazz and am now majoring in it at college.
Hey... this sounds so great to my ears... you are awesome... im trying to get a lot of info from you... you are really talented... i play piano since a was 9, im 18 nowadays... was nice to see your videos... ty... cya
This guy is a hack. Nothing he did was impressive, just over elaboration of a few parlor tricks. If you want real lessons dont go with this guy go to your local community college, someone there will actually know what they are doing.
It's not a question of scales/chords or fast/slow; for what I know, "Jazz" strictly means 1) Swing and 2) particular armonic construction and voicing. This is what I think :)
Toy are correct, it is swing and proper harmonic, i play jazz guitar and piano... You also haveto be very carefull on how you place your tempo changes if you want a briliant melody
cool music i hope i can learn some of the styles u do...

Personal and expressive.
Mediocre and technically and harmonically limited.

this piece you played does not sound jazzy
tambifongmau 2 years ago
Jazz just means to improvise, so there is nothing not jazzy about this really
gcbradbury 2 years ago
jazz doesn't mean to improvise... if that was the case then jazz would be centuries old. There's a lot more than that...
shankpeterman 2 years ago 2
Jazz just means improvisation in this case.

Esto no creo que le ayude mucho a vender mas, mejor dedíquese a otra cosa.

and before anybody decides to insult me... yes, if chick corea or herbie hancock or keith jarrett played this, i would say it wasn't jazz as well.

Jazz just means improvisation in this case.

more like new age improvisation... there are no elements of jazz harmony whatsoever. Can't just call something jazz if it's got improvisation... there's a lot more to it than that. This is simply new age... just listen to all that material around 7:00... not jazz.
shankpeterman 2 years ago 2
i have a very legitamate question: what's new age?
tikitrend 2 years ago
it's like watered down melodramatic ear-candy with very little harmonic or rhythmic sophistication that usually has an emphasis on improvisation... it's what i did in 6th-7th grade. Then, after growing increasingly bored i got into jazz and am now majoring in it at college.

sorry, this does nothing for me!

You vaguely remind me of Chick Corea whenever he does duets with Herbie Hancock. You know the song 'Maiden Voyage' that they did together? Sick.

what the heck is he doing at 1:00? plucking the strings?

No, it's someone with a marketable skill trying to advertise their product.

This guy is a hack. Nothing he did was impressive, just over elaboration of a few parlor tricks. If you want real lessons dont go with this guy go to your local community college, someone there will actually know what they are doing.

where is jazz?
lorenzof84 2 years ago
Those are JAZZ CHORDS for the piano, you just do not realise the Jazz because usualy jazz is scales and faster rythem.
Hajiisya 2 years ago
It's not a question of scales/chords or fast/slow; for what I know, "Jazz" strictly means 1) Swing and 2) particular armonic construction and voicing. This is what I think :)
lorenzof84 2 years ago
Toy are correct, it is swing and proper harmonic, i play jazz guitar and piano... You also haveto be very carefull on how you place your tempo changes if you want a briliant melody
Hajiisya 2 years ago
Well you think wrong =)
