I don't understand why Chintosoccer1's comments are marked as spam. It's true that the PC Engine ports of the NEOGEO fighters blow the SNES ones away.
it's between the genesis and snes when it comes to this game.scaling that is lacking makes this a bit of a boring look and who owns a pc engine anyways?.i sold mine i tought the system looked strange graphically 16bit games that tend to look nes alike,i know that it's an 8 bitter but genesis was more impressive for me,even sega cd letb me cold genesis did a better job then sega cd technically.i'd go with the genesis version,it's fast cheap and looks/sounds good.
BTW the Flickering in the shadows is caused by your LCD TV, i assume that there's some lag in the controls too, that's normal on TFT's.
its all TV videoproccesor's fault, newer Tft TV's have that problem almost solved, but overall, all LCD HD displays suffer from lag input and video distortion issues when used with older gaming systems, pre-Dreamcast.
This version of Fatal Fury 2 has great graphics, however this console isn't capable of scaling, so the backgrounds on some arena's (Cheng and Bear's are examples) just look like a flat picture. The music is almost arcade perfect. The sound effects are very low quality and some don't make sense, for example it's almost a beeping sound when you crash into a barrel. This version is a good port, but I prefer the SNES version over this one. You should review Fatal Fury Special (PC Engine CD & SNES).
@Retro1Gamer What are you talking about?? the backgrounds on Fatal Fury 2 don't have scalling, there's no scalling on the Neogeo either, and what are your arguments to preffer the SNES version over this one?? the SNES FF2 looks and plays terrible, most of the combos on the arcade are missing on the SNES, this port for the PCE shares the same code of the arcade and all combos can be pulled easily just as in the Neogeo.
The SNES graphics are nearly identical to the PCE CD version. The SNES version has a vibrant, rich color palette. The SNES is capable of scaling, unlike the PC Engine CD. The music is better on the PCE version. The sound effects are higher quality on the SNES version. The standard PCE CD pad isn't very well suited for fighting games. I prefer the SNES controller to the PCE CD controller. The SNES version has a heavier emphasis on using special moves rather than combos.
@Retro1Gamer The SNES CAN'T do scalling, the mode 7 can be used only to zoom in/out tile layers, but it cannot be used for sprite scalling, the flase scaling that you see on FFspecial for the SNES are just diferent sprites at diferent sizes being drawn one after each other to give the illusion of scalling but is not real scalling like the one found on the Neogeo or in the Sega Scaller board.
@Retro1Gamer the Sprites on the PCE are bigger, the SNES is a mess, the PCE totally blows the SNES on this matter.
The sound on the PCE is more than just "OK" and is of much better quality than the poor piss muffled SNES bippie voices, the SNES sounds juts terrible.
"The SNES version has heavier emphasis on using special moves????" who cares?? the PCE version plays identical to the arcade and that is waht really matters.
@Retro1Gamer I suggest you to get an actual PCE duo or a Super CDrom 2 with an Arcade card expansion, or even try it on the emulator, because I cant tell by your comments that you have never actually played any of PCEngine ports.
I've played both versions of FF2, and the PCE one had bigger characters and more animation frames. The characters also scale size on the PCE one and doesn't on the SNES one. Moreover, the SNES one was missing the intro, and the field was letter boxed. I'd say the PCE one is better overall.
Fatal Fury 2/ Garou Densetsu 2 (PC Engine) Graphics: 9/10 Sound: 9/10 Game play: 7/10 Fun Factor: 8/10 Overall: 33/40 (8.25/10) Fatal Fury 2 (SNES) Graphics: 9/10 Sound: 9/10 Game play: 8/10 Fun Factor: 10/10 Overall: 36/40 (9/10) You should consider purchasing Ryuuko No Ken/ Art of Fighting for the PC Engine CD (Arcade Card required).
Fatal Fury Special (Fatal Fury 2 upgrade) was released for the Neo-Geo, SNES, Sega CD, Game Gear, and PC Engine CD (Arcade Card required). It includes 4 extra characters, 4 extra stages, and the bosses are selectable from the start of the game. The SNES has very muffled voices, but it plays very well. The Sega CD is missing animations, and the gameplay is slower than the SNES, but it controls the same. The Game Gear is missing 7 characters, 7 stages, and all voices. The control is very responsive.
I was pretty impressed with the PC Engine version. It does look pretty good considering the age and compared ot other ports. Even worked well with just the standard pad.
This game was ported to the Game Boy (Japan Only) as Nettou Garou Densetsu 2. All of the speech is gone, however text bubbles appear when special or super attacks are performed. All characters are present, and you can play as the bosses. Bonus stages are missing, and the plane switching has been removed. The control is very responsive. It contains the artwork from the arcade endings. All moves and stages are present. The music is great.
Play as bosses: Press Select 3 times on the TAKARA logo.
There's also a port of Fatal Fury Special for the PC Engine, which is a follow-up to Fatal Fury 2. In Fatal Fury Special, you have 16 playable characters (one hidden). It's an excellent port, miles better than the SNES and Sega CD versions.
Nice one Lorfarius! Make sure you get some cool video footage for us! ^_^ I bet ur going to come back with bags full of treasure - I'd be dangerous in that Super Potatoe retro shop!
The PC Engine was such a beast of a machine. It's a shame that it flopped in the states.
