  • Goosebumps and chills! Rare performance of original scoring/voicing done to perfection. Its intricate melodic line and evolving modulations are complex; they not only challenge the skills of any musician, they are why it is regarded as the most beautiful and impressive song of the 20th century. From the American musical theater, it deserves its place at the top the Great American Songbook. Though he composed much great music, for this one song alone, Kern is the sole possessor of The Gold.

  • In 1981 before going to Saudi Arabia where we spent 20 years we record this performance.

We played it often in Saudi. So many were blessed by this. It brought tears to one man.

Now thanks to YouTube we can hear right on our computer.

  • lately, we begin our mornings listening and/or watching this. In every way, it is stunning!

  • @Avalon - thanks! I keep on checking. Happy New Year!

  • does anyone know how to get the CD - mine was lost or borrowed and it's one of my favorites - I have yet to find it on eBay. It was on Angel Records and a treasure .

  • @cdpete I'd keep watching out on ebay, Amazon, & any other likely sites. I bought a copy on ebay & one at Half Price Books. (Actually bought another one on ebay, but it was a totally different, junky cd, despite the pic & description being of the McGlinn one; they never sent my $s back either--grrr). It's insane that this recording is out of print! Good luck.

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! ....For sharing:-)

  • This is INCREDIBLE MUSIC.....(and interpretation...)!!!

  • The best interpretation ever.

  • I believe that's Cris Groenendaal singing with Judy Kaye, and Davis Gaines with Rebecca Luker. George Dvorsky sang on the McGlinn CD, but not in this concert.

This seems to be the 1990 Evening at Pops concert with John McGlinn conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra and Kitty Carlisle Hart hosting.

  • @mcarroll63 I think you're right, although my misty memories of watching this back then had burnished it to seem longer & even more moving than this. I remember sitting with my father & both of us crying from the sheer beauty of it. Jerome Kern was in direct touch w, heaven & its angels. Wish they'd performed "Some Girl Is On Your Mind" on this show--that's gorgeous on the CD, especially the quiet, unexpectedly delicate ending. Such mastery!

  • Awesome
