Do you happen to know which ECC83s would replace the pre amp section of the JVM 210H ? I looked inside and there are 2 with a 00055 and 3 with 00067 numbers in it. One of the 00067 has a cup cover in it. They come with a Marshall logo, but I wonder if you know the brand. Shuguang doesn't make ECC83s ??
@dekzan Any 12ax7 or ECC83 tubes will work. You want something with low microphonics in the V1 position. I use all Electro Harmonix 12ax7's in my preamp section, and think they work well in this amp, but that's just my preference.
@dekzan Most of the guys I know that have tried other output tubes (including myself) keep going back to the SED Winged "C" EL34's. They seem to bring out the best in this amp.
@metalmusiqcrzy I'm assuming "#10" is a 10 Henry choke? I have the MAR100C, which is a 3 Henry choke. I tried both, and settled on the MAR100C for my needs. Added a bit of spongyness to the pick attack (which I like), and a little more body to the tone. Great mod for a more vintage vibe, but not recommended for modern metal players.
So, I have one of these amps... Do you think the Choke Mod was worth it? Was the difference really noticable? MY JVM has a fairly loud hum on OD1 and OD2 when they're set to Orange or Red, I was hoping the choke would get rid of it. Nice playing!
The choke mod is worth it if you want the amp to sound and "feel" more like the earlier Marshall's (more compressed). If you like the hard edge on your pick attack, then it probably wouldn't be for you. Your hum is most likely another issue (bad ground, cables, tube...) and would not be remedied by adding a choke.
@utubefloyd - who told you that a choke will make your amp more compressed? It would say that the resistor in the same place will give a lot more sag to the voltage in your power supply. So maybe thats a lot of compression!? Marshall, Peavey an others just got rid of the choke because it costs money and they have to build cheapos.......and people buy em. Also, a choke is a much better filter to hum in the power supply, will make your amp quiet - much more efficiency!!! think about it.
@capo2007 My ears told me that the tone is more compressed (spongier) after replacing the resistor with a choke. Members of the JVM forum who have added chokes to their JVM's concur.
@utubefloyd - hmmmmm, I would say compression depends on the resistance of the choke - or the resistor. What I can hear when I replace a 470 Ohm resistor with a choke of 5 Henry and maybe 200 Ohms is - the choke filters out hum much better and gives more power/higher voltage to the amp. If you tried the 20 Henry choke - I'm sure there's more compression with this one. Remember that Robbne Fords Dumble has the resistor in the same place of the power supply to get more compression and sag! greets
Then don't torture yourself by watching "Marshall" amp videos. You sound like a "POD Head" who has never owned a decent tube amp. Sorry, just call em like I see em.
i agree. i love the sound of most Marshall amplifiers. the overdrive is just amazing. i played Bogner, Egnater, Sovtek, and various "tube driven" solid states and settled on teh JCM2000 TSL. It just kicks butt! Great Marshall overdrive destroys all other amps!
gonna have to disagree with you man. While im not a big fan of the tone in the video it certainly wasnt bad. I just prefer less generic rock tones from amps like Dumbles (usually clones because i dont have a real one for obvious reasons)
But i like any amp that isnt digital and processed sounding, basicly anything tube without digital crap thrown in with it.
Have not done any mods to a TSL100, but I would say any amp that does not use a choke, could benefit from adding one. They are an inexpensive mod. OT and PT upgrades on the other hand are not inexpensive, and I have heard varying opinions on whether they are worth the cost. The C83 mod on my JVM was done using a mini DPDT toggle switch mounted on the rear panel. The caps are mounted directly on the switch contacts.
Hello Sr. Very nice tone. Absolutely fantastic. I have a TSL 100. What mods wolud you suggest me to do?! i mean, in the mecury magnetics main page are a several substitution options for output, power transformers and chokes etc... I am also plannig to retube the head with some kt77. Anywas, i will be gratefull for any suggestions ant tips. bye
At the time this video was recorded, I had not done any mods, other than the choke. Since then, I have done a mod to make the C83 cap switchable, along with another cap value (3 modes via switch). I would recommend that vs removing the cap permanently, as it changes the character of the amp. I also find my amp sounds best running all 4 output tubes vs 2.
I did the mod myself. If you do it correctly, you must remove the main circuit board to unsolder the resistor it replaces (a little more than most people want to tackle). The easy way would be to solder the choke leads to the existing resistor legs, and then clip the resistor out, leaving the legs in the board. This would not require removal of the board, but would ruin the resistor (no re-installing). I have photos if you need them.
My 410 has never had a problem with "squealing", either before or after adding the choke. I think some of the people stating this are just cranking the gain too far. The JVM has a lot of gain on tap, more than needed in most cases. Not for those that like everything on 11.
So does your modded JVM still squeal or feedback when you turn up the gain "too high" or can you effectively turn the gain up higher before feedback begins after the mod?
I have not experienced this problem with my amp, but I do not use gain settings higher than 12:00 (Orange) and 10:00 (Red). That is more than enough gain for what I like to play.
Sounds great. I'm thinking of getting my JVM410 modded with mercury magnetics stuff. Can I ask you would you recommend it now you've installed the choke? How noticeable is the changed to the sound and noise floor? Would you consider getting the power and output transformers swapped out as well? Thanks! :)
I would recommend the choke, but only the MAR100C, 3 Henry choke. It added more bass content and smoothed things out (in a good way). I tried a larger choke, but the change was not near as noticable. As far as the PT/OT upgrades, can't really say. I was happy with the improvement from the choke and didn't want to sink that much money into the amp.
Which mercury magnetics choke did you use? The 10H or 3H version?

@visceralvideos A/B'd them both, went with the 3H.

Thanks. I just brought home a new JVM 210H. Do these tubes come in the amp from the factory? Can u please, give more details? Is SED a tube brand?
dekzan 10 months ago
@dekzan Yes, SED is the manufacturer and they came in the amps from the factory. Do a search on SED Winged C.

@utubefloyd
actually having a choke would have less compression since having a resistor as an inductor is what will give you sag. Chokes do not sag.

Hey man nice sound I just got the same amp.I pulled two tubes and biased to 35 and it's sounding good, but not as good as yours!:)
