I'm going back there next Friday to work as a volunteer - can't wait to see all the animals again. This is a magical place with 300+ animals that you can really get to know when you care for them. Good to see the lions Trust & Zion, Gumbie, Goeters and all the others...... more photos to follow posted on my return.....
@redfoxp Wow lucky!! how many times have you been there? I miss the 3 Brothers (they're now released into the huge enclosure if i rememeber correctly?) and vervets and the dogs and the cheetahs, the lady's man- Goeters, FIGHTER the cheetah.. oh... and all of them! please say hi to them for me and hope you have another wonderful magical time there!! :)
Hii! I'm hoping to go during January 2010!! But how would they know when to giv us the post exposure rabies jab if we've been bitten or scratched? And does anione go with u into the enclosures with eg the Lions cheetahs and baboons? They're tame but what if they're in a bad mood?
There have been no cases of rabies so far but you need to have a rabies jab as a precaution. Of course you are not allowed in with the wilder adult lions you feed them over a fence, again they have some tamer cheetahs that are fine, the wilder ones are only fed by throwing meat from the back of a trailer. You are not put in any danger, you will have a fantastic time, this is a unique and very , very special place.
No one has ever got rabies, it is only a precaution as a wild animal can arrive at the centre. All encounters with the animals there are supervised, it is safe.
Word of warning - don't put anything you would want to lose in your luggage going through Johannesburg airport - my bag had the lock picked and things taken!
There are washing facilites there and a lundry service so no need to worry about washing. Take old clothes to work in as you will get dusty and dirty handling food but something nice to wear at dinner in the evening on the special nights.
Heya, im hoping to go next year for 8 weeks, it looks amazing!! Back onto the injections, how many did you have to have before you went? And how long did you go for? I really cant wait, you have made it look so good!!!
Hi, It's recommended that you have rabies as a precaution as any new animal that arrives is wild. The innoculations are spread out over a number of weeks so you need to have it done in advance of your trip. They're no different to any other inncoulation.
You'll have a great time when you go, it's a very special place.

@redfoxp Thank you for your reply! I went to Harnas in January 2010 and had a blast! I wish to go back some day and try other volunteer places too!

So beautiful and funny photos, and animals.
My favourites are: Lost, Trust & Zion, Gumbie, Klippie and Asem. And certainly Schalk van der Merwe & his family!!! :)))
The HARNAS Wildlife Foundation is clinker!!!
I love them.

This looks incredible - I'm going to Harnas for a month in April '08 and can't wait!
Strange question - did you get a rabies jab before you went? I've had confliction accounts on whether I need to get one or not.
Thanks :D
