  • Im a big fan of him, but this performance is lame. He just has all the stems playing in Live and then hes just messing around with effects and thats it.. Cool you can turn the filter down and back up, add reverb, and then speed the tempo up at the end! Wow. Really impressive

  • @benoblest2 Yes, that's how electronic gigs work. Unfortunate yes, but reasonable also. I stopped getting disappointed when I thought of performances like this being something like a more "live" dj set. The same for me applies for artists like Nosaj Thing, Eskmo, Baths. And I don't think he's trying to be impressive.

  • this looks like it was recorded in the 90s

  • The performance was awesome, but damn the video quality looks like it's from the 90's.

  • love

  • ゆっくりでごめんなさい 笑

  • I really love most of his stuff, particularly this song, but I didn't think it was great performance. Maybe he was hungover from touring or something because I'm sure he must know his shit off by heart.

  • what equiptment is he using

  • @sketchead2 apple macbook with ableton, akai mpc 1000 as midi controller, akai lpd8 for effect triggering in ableton and a kind of audio interface to run it all trough.

  • 3:33 i just love the normal pitch voice sample he uses in this performance! should be in the studio version too!

  • @pixithemis its a sample from the background indian raga he used in quitters raga

  • :'O U R MAGIC TEACH ME HOW 2 PRODUCE PLLLLLLZZZZZZZ

  • HEALTH shirt = pure awesome

  • ableton is dope

  • This Is Just Genius. Fav Track.

  • He makes such awesome music!

  • fucking great or fucking shit, both maybe x

  • ...what? Why the hell is he using an MPC as a CONTROLLER? If he's just triggering samples in Live, there's absolutely no point in paying $1k on a MIDI controller; an MPD could do the same thing for 1/3rd of the price.

Also, the music's a little "meh."

  • @mouthbreather1 Might we be priviledged enough to hear some of your compositions? Just so we know how it should be done

  • @talltrini10 I'm sorry, I forgot having a differing opinion in Youtube comments leads to instant snark from anyone afraid of dissent. Lord knows it's a sin to question the logic of a musician's gear choice. So I'll rephrase.

THIS GUY IZ A GENUISS. HE MAKES MY PANTIES MOIST.

  • @mouthbreather1 because he uses it as both a sampler AND a controller. cmon now

  • @lkman4 All I see coming out of the back is 1 MIDI cable.

  • @mouthbreather1 break it down man - he uses his MPC at home, as a sampler, and when he performs live, its used as a controller

  • @lkman4 But if he's putting the whole song together on an MPC, I don't see why Live needs to come into play at all. The only thing I see him doing with Live that he maybe wouldn't be able to do with an MPC would be some of the filter sweeps, but those could be just as easily sampled back into the MPC rather than re-loading the whole damn song into Live. Hell, even hooking up 2 or 3 mini Kaoss pads would be cheaper than a Live license.

Or, fuck it, maybe he just really likes how MPC pads feel.

  • @mouthbreather1 course man everyone just finds their own way of doing things. To all you gearheads out there its what you do with it!

  • @mouthbreather1 I guess he might use it for producing as well as live performances. Dude, you should totally listen to his album "Lucky Shiner". This live performance might be a bit underwhelming compared to listening to the album which I think is on par with Four Tet's latest.

  • @pressove I've listened to some of the other stuff of that album. I don't hate it, but I'm not completely blown away by it either. Just kind of indifferent.

  • amazing! i love his songs! for da weeed

  • I don't see why people have a problem with producers performing like this, most musicians want to play live and for people like Gold Panda, Star Slinger et al using technology is the easiest way. Their still talented

  • @JazzBobification even though the music is still good, its less exciting than watching a whole band rock out on stage

  • @daviewavie112 agreed

  • this is making me want to get a drum machine

  • So disappointing your playing Wednesday @ Mutek... won't make it until Friday..... please stay around for Piknic Elctronic it's an open mix of Mutek artists. Inquire about it --- you'd make alot people happy. Of course if you plan on staying in town that is :)

  • Umm, is this hot stuff? Do people and the hype machine think this is tops? - not hating, just confused.

  • search MPC on here to see lots of this stuff...even radder stuff...

  • KOALA !

  • ehhhhh.....

  • is that an Akai MPC?

  • @mullerherr yup MPC 1000, from the looks of it hes just using it as a midi controller but I could be wrong

  • @wantmohr seems he uses mpc as sequencer, not controller. I could be wrong too, but as I understand - there are sample clips in ableton live which are triggered from mpc... ))

  • Yep, it's Ableton but he doesn't use many of the sounds from it, he samples himself and sometimes other people's music. I love what he does when he plays live, you always get a unique version of the sound. That's a rare thing with electronic music!

  • @theblackpaths

I disagree. I think it's much easier to bring up a "unique version" every time you perform with Ableton Live. Actually, if you won't just push play (that is, you play live), it's hard to always follow the exact same build of a track. Meaning there is more work in sticking to the "original" version.

With all my respects to the artist himself (I've read some on him), this performance draws no more attention than the first attempts of a verdant Live user.

  • @ShortTermEternity If you want to follow the exact build of the track, you could always DJ? As for this performance, I'm a Gold Panda fan, I love his music, I'm not arsed if anybody knows some dude who can play an MPC with his tongue whilst scratching a turntable with his elbows. He looks like he's playing at the back of a hairdressers, I just buzz off any footage of this guy. even if it's just him pressing play and then striking some buttons. GOLD PANDA RAWKS MAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!

  • @ShortTermEternity This is a TV performance, I don't think you can judge Gold Panda on this alone or by what you've read. I mean, it could be interesting to hear what he'd do with a live band but that isn't really his forte. When I go to gigs/clubs, I tend to listen and dance and enjoy myself. I don't really care whether or not they're really putting themselves out, it depends on the band I suppose. I produce a lot of music myself so I'm not ignorant of his methods but, ultimately, I don't care!

  • @theblackpaths

I don't judge him. I like his music, I like his approach to music even more, I like the guy. I just don't get the "huge amount of buzz" over this video.

And still don't agree on "that's a rare thing with electronic music".

From the music listening point of view you're right: I don't care of tools or methods either if I like what I hear. When I start thinking of that I stop listening to music.

  • @ShortTermEternity I thought you were talking about the 'Gold Panda' buzz, not this video in particular! There's a fine line between playing live and DJ'ing these days, I think people get too heated about it though (They wear their chins down with vigorous stroking at gigs, when they should just dance.. or go somewhere else!). I agree, if you're familiar with Ableton, this video isn't particularly fascinating. I'd prefer a nice promo video, maybe with some attractive RnB honeys booty shaking! x

  • what's the program that he use? ableton?

  • dickes thumps up für das t shirt
