The reason that one unit keeps running off is because the ai always selects any single unit to be a scout and explore the map. When that 'scout' dies, the ai then selects a new one from the available units it has. Even if it has only one unit left, the ai will select it to go scouting.
Actually as regards the cost of both units, pikemen turns up to be most efficient ones to kill elephants.. with the resources of 1 elephant you can create almost 5 pikemen.. (changing of course gold by wood).. do the test.. 5 vs 1, and you'll see who wins ;)
@RodrigoMelendez4 of course, and in a game, its almost impossible to sustain a constant army of elephants due to the high costs. But yeah, pikemen only works on killing cavalry units, besides that they are pretty useless.

FIRST: costs... each elephant costs 200f and 75g, pikeman costs 35f and 25w... so... if u need nearly double pikeman to kill elephants, you will, respectivelly need only 70f and 50w that is 120, so pikeman still onw war elephants because elephants costs 275 recourses, so if the war elephant user and the pikeman user collect same aumont of recourses, pikeman user will have nearly 5x pikeman than elephants, so at each elephant he will have..
This was done in map editor so theres not much more i can do unless i play the game but that would be pretty hard to get accurate results. Besides if the elephants were upgraded to the same degree id imagine the results would probably be the same or close enough to the same.
No, the attack of the pikeman is 3 i believe, multiplied with the extra damage against horses/elephants, but with the arsenal you can upgrade that to 6 and more, so we have more than double damage, while the elephants get only + 25 % damage. That's a lot, I guess, the pikemen would have won at 20 vs. 20 with the arsenal bonus, and the best: They are so fucking cheap :D.

i think you didn't get what i want to say..
because the base of elephants are very high so that after the arsenal upgrade should only have a 10%to20% improvement
but the pikemen base is very low so they may have 50% maybe 100% improvement
(i didn't have the game now so i didn't know the actual value )

before upgrade elephants attack is 400% of the pikemen
after upgrade let say elephants is 20+5,pikemen is 5+5
the different is only 250% now
