It doesn't matter to me if this story is inspired by Pocahontas or Fern Gully or whatever. I love Pocahontas and I love Avatar. The makers of Pocahontas can be proud that they did such a good movie and James Cameron may took it as a role model for Avatar and did a really good job with this as well. I think it's totally fine. James Cameron created something diffrent. I love both. :)

@ShadowCrashed81 Actually, if you think about it. Yes, they are. The scene where Jake first wakes up in his Avatar body ALL of that was animated, even the doctors. So if this was real that is exactly what it all would look like. This took years of developing, they even made the entire language of the Na'vi. The story, yes it is simple. But the ground breaking effects are very impressive. If anyone was to think they could do better. It'd take them years to prove it.

While I didn't hate his movie, as it had some great acting for the most part and cgi sequences that were just breathtaking, in terms of story, it was not that great. The whole ferngully/pocahontas approach was definately not original. I also didn't care for the way that the military was portrayed. Also, a slight strategy error on the human side, why not bomb them from space? Would've made things much easier. And was I the only person who saw the end of the battle and was like WTF?!

@Rangersleadtheway233 Bomb them from space... you mean with nuclear or atomic stuff? And burn all that so wanted, valuable resource, unobtanium? Not that easy :) And remember, basically it's not about bombing all the Na'vis, but only their deity (the Tree of Souls).

The story for me is much closer to Dances with Wolves than to Pocahontas. About military, well the only bad soldier in the film is the leader, Quaritch. All the other soldiers only follow his orders. I have no problem with that.

I always thought that the story of Avatar was a little too basic, but I really don't mind at all because of:

1.James Cameron is one of the best filmmakers of ALL TIME!

2. The CG work by ILM and Stan Winston Studio is so GREAT done.

3. I actually followed the emotions that the characters was going threw as I watched the film and thought of the story AFTER the film was over...

@MrShrubsy Actually, the first draft of "Project 880" (Avatar's codename, before it had a title) was written in 1993. The final draft of 880 was written in 1995. It was then refined in 2005, and finalized in 2006. There are 4-6 different scripts, but all have the same premise. Just the names of some characters are changed, a few lines are different, some scenes added/removed, etc.

@draw4yourlife2 I believe what he might have meant is that it is quite unoriginal. Considering he wrote it in '99, people say it was thought of before Disney's Pocahontas. But he could have altered it to be more unique, like Nolan did with Inception (adjust story depending on the scale needed), and like so many more do. Instead, he went on with it, making it seem like it was merely a Visual FX reel. Which, honestly, is what it really is. and an advertisement for 3D.
