  • It's not so much what he's saying as the way he says it. He thinks he's some kind of philosopher king, but he doesn't actually have anything to say. He's sort of like my film teacher: desperately trying to convince himself he knows a goddamn thing, despite learning what he was teaching us off Wikipedia, AS HE READ THE ARTICLE DIRECTLY TO US.

  • @coolcow4321 So why exactly is "his BS ridiculous"? I can perhaps agree that "make love to the mountain" might be an awkward comment for the kiddies on YouTube to hear, but everything else he said was perfectly rational and actually quite wise. Is it just BS because a funny song was made from the interview? Or do you perhaps not understand what he is saying? Or are you just on the Shatner hate train? I'm not a trekky or anything, I just think he spoke wisely.

  • @NempholyErrormoa I could not agree more. It doesn't happen often, but you've pretty much said everything for me. Kudos.

  • I'm getting on the mountain just watching this.

  • "Captain Kirk is climbing a mountain". Fair enough Shatner -> "Challenge the rock". Yeah I see what you mean. "This human being Kirk, representing all human beings, climbing higher than himself". Yep, you've sorted out some kind of psychological metaphor. "There's reason to think if a crystal can regrow itself, that's one of the criteria of life". WHAT THE FUCK SHATNER???

  • It's rule 34 in action before there was even an internet. Somewhere out there there must be mountain porn.

  • Gotta love the Shat.

  • there is reason to believe that granite is alive.

  • @tgmnewman that reason is called LSD

  • Love this guy, but he's referring to free soloing, not free climbing.

  • Our... (crazy hand gesture).... guest..... (unnecessary pause) star, Sybok. <-------CLASSIC SHACTING!

  • his ego was just massive in those days... I really wonder how it got that big and I wonder how he feels about it now.

  • I love he he's doing that Captain Kirk "overgesturing" with his arms! xD

  • captain kirk is climbing a mountain, why is he climbing a mountain?

  • Eons... days... in the sun.

  • okay, I think this is an interesting way of thinking, no joke.

    The problem:

This isn't made clear in the "Star Trek V" film. Lost in translation perhaps?

  • 1:11-1:13 one of life's great mysteries.

  • Comment removed

  • thumbs up if you repeatedly pressed 1:10!

  • Shatner is deep.

  • Fascinating.

  • ive met him in my neighborhood coffee shop couple of times. hes just as cool with his coffee and slippers

  • I climbed a mountain once, no ropes or equipment, it was hard and scary, I promised myself that if I lived I would never ever ever do it again, it was not fun or sexual, it became about life and death and how brave I was, I made it, we all did, but I will keep my self promise and never do it again, my mountain was only 9 thousand feet and had a gentle slope to it, still with bare hands it was hard and scary.

  • im a doctor Jim, not a bricklayer

  • What a load of utter garbage.

  • BOB!

  • Now we see a very deep analysis of why this character would climb the mountain... and in the actual scene, none of it's really there in the actual scene.

  • lol, no one does shatner like shatner.

  • I'd rather walk up the side of the mountain --- then walk down the other side of the mountain.

  • Kirk Climbs to the peak of the mountain and I can hear in the most mighty tone of accomplishment...KHAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!

  • This would have been heart rending if shatner had ACTUALLY BOTHERED to go rock climbing.

  • the interview hit its peak at the end

  • As much as it sounds freaky, and sexual. It is amazingly poetic how he describes his philosophy on what Rock Climbers feel. And frankly, I think he's right, Rock Climbers do want to feel close to the Earth, to the as he said "living" body of rock that they find themselves climbing. It makes perfect sense!

  • Bills mouth is always a couple of seconds ahead of his brain... gotta love him

  • When he said "Captain Kirk is climbing the mountain, why is he climbing the mountain" I thought he was going to break out in song xD

  • I have to admit, even William Shatner looks confused about what he's saying, at times. Some of what he's saying is pretty difficult to comprehend, and it seems like he knows it.

Love the videos on this, though.

  • title win.

  • Brilliant. I think I kinda love this guy. :)

  • I haven't started this video yet partly because I'm scared that it will ruin the mystique of Shatner of the Mount.

  • Before I've ever watched this video, but knowing the remix all along, I thought the maker of the remix had cut the original audio and put it together to make it sound senseless... now I know better

  • Who has the bigger ego, Kanye West or William Shatner?

  • 4:50 Shatner explains how climbers make love to the mountain.

  • I thought maybe the FallOnYourSword video just took the most odd-sounding parts out of context and strung them together. I was wrong: Shatner meant it.

  • The truly terrifying thing is that he seems deadly serious about mountain sex.

  • toe and finger holes

  • To hug the mountain!

  • This reminds me of a David Lynch interview I saw a while back, he's fucking mental too

  • captain kirk is climbing a mountain, of drug use :<

  • Yeah... Shatner kinda mixed up "free climbing" and "solo climbing" there. You still use security devices when free climbing, the only difference from "technical climbing" is that you use devices only for security, not for progression. "Soloing" is merely a suicidal and marginal sub-form of "free climbing" and the common reason why free climbers have to pay inordinate premiums for life insurance.

  • He's gotten Space Madness

  • He's just like Calculon from Futurama XD

  • @GestureStew You know Captain Brannigan is based on him, right?

  • @CMBrannstrom Yeah that makes sense but after seeing this I think he's very much like Calculon too. Can't wait for the new episodes.

  • 'Yes sir O.o', his crew slowly backs towards the beaming up area to abandon the clearly awesome but equally insane captain

  • 33,000 feet tall...erm, yeh, maybe not...

  • granite is alive?

  • Whats amazing is that he thinks he knows what he's talking about. What total BS

  • Who would win in a fight between Chuck Norris and God? SHATNER.

  • @Rogerborg Well Chuck norris is god so really its

    CN vs WS.........Chuck would win

  • I can't decide which is funnier, this original monologue or the remix...

  • the man is a legend , hes got an ego the size of the enterprie E but is still awesome

  • As a climber in the CCS, this video makes me happier than puppies!!! This is awesome that only Shatner can achieve. Totally fictional and made-up information, but doused in win!!!!

  • "Bill, we need you to speak about mountain climbing for 5 mins, okay?"

"No problem, let me just drop this tab first"

  • At least he's eloquent with his BS.

  • Did you think so? It's like every ten words came from out of a top hat with no magical properties.

  • Obviously doesn't know what he's talking about and just making it up. The music video mashup was better.

  • I just realised that, as obnoxious as he is sometimes, the fact is there is no one out there like him. He serves a great purpose. He's going to be remembered.

  • 1:10 :) the special part :)

  • @filip000 yes, and then 4:52 to the end!

  • Ummm...Is he for real?? O_o

  • Yes... yes, he is. I recommend talking to some serious Shakespearean actors about motivation sometime. Then you'll see where Shatner is coming from.

  • Shatner's the man. A bit crazy, but still.

  • why is he climbing a mountain?

  • Because he's in love.

  • he talks so much shit fair play!

  • WRONG!!!!!free climbing is climbing with the use of your hands and feet on the rock.

free soloing is what he explained.

  • :-P

  • this man .. is a GOD.

  • I've seen some mountains I'd like to make love to.

  • to make love the mountain

  • Oh Bill Shatner, never change! XD

  • Comment removed

  • Mmmmm...I agree with sondano...to much LDS.

  • YOur not a climber are you? for you to say Shatner is talking BS you've never climbed a shit

  • neither has shatner

  • Comment removed

  • I want to make love to that mountain, but I will leave the sinewy climbers for Kirk

  • Envelope that mountain.

  • William Shatner has taken too much fucking LSD

  • it's LDS not LSD ya know?

  • The enthusiasm and sense of generosity he feels in sharing his philosophy about mountain climbers and their sinuous bodies making love to the mountain, is quite evident in the tremor in his voice and in the ecstasy which he could not hide completely from his face, although he tried with all his considerable acting skills.

    I was deeply moved.

  • @whburgess "considerable acting skills" ? ROFL!!!!!!!

  • @mbunds What!? another idiot on yt? yikes!. Ohhh please misterbunds?

pleAse go back under your smeagol gollum rock. you are jealous of Kirk, he is a TOTAL GOD! Janey in Texas

  • why does he climb it? "because it's there"

  • brilliant

captain kirk is climbing a mountain...why is he climbing a mountain...? cos otherwise you have to walk on the planes...you what son?

  • I wanted to make love to that mountain with my sinuous body too.

  • Politicians.

  • I live in monterrey mexico and we are surrounded by mountains; we live in perpetual erection.

  • Now I want "go hug a rock" T-shirts!

  • The climb is going where no man has gone before...

  • To envelop that mountain.

  • Why is he climbing the mountain?

  • Because he's in love.

  • I don't see the bullshit, in this. It makes some sense. I mean, you know, he's not that articulate, but I understand what he's saying, and it's rather poetic.

  • yeah I mean I am a climber and I often make love to the mountain whats the big deal

  • haha

  • watch 'Shatner of the Mount' by fallonyoursword69 it does a brilliant remix of this

  • @FallingDarkness91 Some phrases are missing. "Tiny toes" and "because im in love" etc. :(

  • @FallingDarkness91 I don't think the people who come here before finding the FOYS mix will find it very funny...

  • @lyprov I dunno, I think it's hilarious in its own right...

Although the remix is utterly epic

  • kirk: representing all man

  • i like his views on cavemen

  • Shatner is a god!!!

  • The man, the Shatner, awesome

  • its almost bull shit and yet entertaining at the same time lol

  • 'Shatner at his peak'

I just got the pun, subtle and awesome

    funny shit

  • He wants to make love to the mountain.

  • Why is he climbing a mountain?

  • because he is in love

  • because its there duh

  • haha I love your description of this. yes it is mind blowing, he can ramble for quite some time, but it can be strangely entertaining.

I LOVE the version by Fall On Your Sword ♥ Hilarious stuff...

  • Funniest

    Man

    ALIVE

  • to envolop the mountin

  • shatner make a mountain in my pants ;)

  • 3:08 o.O

  • haha look for the song by fallonyoursword i think

  • Shatner is God

  • Woooow. What on earth, William Shatner.

I was totally giggling throughout. I can always trust him to brighten my mood with his unintentionally hilarious ramblings. :D

  • "They wish to make love with the mountain."

No not the climbers, just Kirk.

  • The last twenty seconds of this video are some of the most beautiful words I've heard in my life. Once again, William Shatner has cheered me up about everything, forever.

  • To be fair, nothing he actually says should really be considered bullshit until about 2.30. After that, it's pure Shatner. He mentions crystals forming, 'becoming one' and even says the word 'eons' in less than a minute.

  • Shatner's audiobook of his Star Trek Movie Memories was excellent. If you liked this vid you should definitely grab it on Audible or iTunes.

  • I loved that star trek movie it was one of my favorites, but people didnt like it

  • wow, he's talking about crystals forming and thats why kirk is climblin. wtf? kirk isnt climbing b/c of rock and crystals forming, he's climbing cause he's a badass

  • so passionate, but so wrong.......about everything.

  • Its actually not all that wrong and not as bullshit as you might think.. if youre a climber.

  • Agreed kickinghorsetv.

  • @kickinghorsetv

agreed with ya pal. there is more to the climb than what most people see. Symbolically climbing a mountain is like getting over something incredibly difficult. Also seen partly as a ritual in many countries. The strangest thing for me is when people I know look at a mountain the first time and think nothing of it, however something draws them to say that they would like to climb that mountain. Why us that? My guess is that a deeper subconscious desire connects us to the climb.

  • however shatner does actually overdo it a little... lol

  • For some reason, the last twenty seconds or so of this clip remind me of something Frank Drebbin said about a former roommate...

Hey, I kid. Shatner rocks. We'll miss him when he's gone, assuming that he doesn't outlive all of us.

  • go climb a rock

  • wow... too much drugs in his youth.. too much alien chicks kissed..

  • You can NEVER kiss enough chicks - alien or otherwise.... except the little feathered ones, ofcourse, those I leave alone.

  • i wonder where he gets his weed

  • I haven't laughed this hard in months. Thanks Shat

  • ".......... because it's there!"

  • Best. Caveman. Impression. EVER.

  • the caveman actually sounds a bit french... haha

  • This man is so afraid of making a mistake that he slows way down and does an old way of talking, which is like stage talk, because he is an actor from a different era. So, unless you understand that, it appears as though he's full of BS.

  • right - people think they know what goes into acting, making movies, theater, etc... but really, it's a completely secret society that only lets us know what they will us to know - so if you should think you know anything about actors or acting - you need to wake up.

I know several actors who work in both theater and TV and film, and every time I ask them about technique or some other deep burrowing question into their craft - they clamp up like an oyster and refuse to speak on the matter.

  • Dangerous!!

  • Even though this movie didn't do as well as some of the others, it still had some of the best Kirk/ Spock/ McCoy dialogues out of any movie or tv series. This film also had some great acting too.

  • i don't think free climbing means what he thinks it means.

  • I'm not sure he knows what he means but he is trying:)))

  • Exactly. You got to love his passion :D. Plus he's the first to poke fun of himself but he does have his intensity too.

  • great guy Shatner. he really thinks about his storys, and asks questions, were as in the Bermanverse the anwser too every story is pointless deaths ,destruction and explosions.too bad the studio din't give him the money too do the movie the way he wanted to do it.
