I remember this song (before I even heard of Fred & Ginger) in the seventies as a child and fell in love with it. So evocative even then, at the age of six, of a bygone era. Now my own little girl loves it...
Oh my goodness me! Thank you for this post! I used to ask Daddy to "put the bubble song on", the champagne cork popping at the beginning just got me like I was five years old again - pure nostalgia! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
I had this on vinyl as a very young man in love with the glamour of the '20s and '30s; I agree; this is easily the very best version of this classic romantic escapist song. Beautiful music!
Equipment...techniques..and styles move along over the years but this has to be the best version of this great song. They've captured the flavour of the original and improved on it....and doesn't she sing it well....wonderful.
@HotSummerof1976 I also remember this song from the summer of 76, it was on the radio a lot at the time, there was a kind of swing revival going on then. Brings back good memories!
This terrific. I heard it on Radio 2 in the car this morning and was totally overwhelmed. Maureen McGovern is a talent of gigantic proportions and I had never heard her, or of her, before. Thank you so much for posting. I am going to listen to all the rest of this wonderful woman's tracks on youtube.
heard this before on Paul O'Grady show-thanks-struggling for ages to remember the name of the song/singer, what a great song & throwback to gentler times...
It's 1976... There's Queen, 10cc, Eagles, John Miles etc... Then, all of a sudden out the blue, this magnificent record from a bygone era sweeps into the charts like Fred Astair on a magic carpet ride!! The same year Robin Sarstedt did did a similar thing with "My resistance is low" two amazing old songs brought back to life & doing well in the contemporary chart, fantastic ! 5 stars apiece.
This has to be the all time BEST rendition of this classic song that was ever made..Maureens voice is superb, and the orchestra is absolutely FANTASTIC, and it was recorded wonderfully...!! every nuance of the band can be heard so clearly and sharply!! Thank you so very much!!
Agree, absolutely! Fantastic indeed. As far as I know, yes, Maureen's is the best rendition of this top classic. Not everyone would be up to singing The Continental and make it sound even better than previous renditions. Crisp and elegant. Muchas, muchas gracias, willie1 two, from Uruguay, South America.
@Zathras01 I heard a great modern recording in French while I was in a speaker shop in Japan...I had just arrived in the country so my Japanese was very poor and I couldn't get the name of the singer...I have a feeling I'll die without learning who it was...
In this one, lies so to speak perfection, both as far as lyrics are concerned and in respect of the rythmn and prettyness of the singer!!!:) Many, many thanks, Maureen!!! I now have 22 years-old and am burundian. Thanks to you, I shall not be able to do without ancient movies and songs anymore!!!:)
Aaaaaaaaaaaaace!!!! For my part, this is both Music in his time of perfection, if I may so!!! Songs like this one not only are MEMORABLE to me but they should even be conserved in museums and be included in music classes!!!:)
yes...that is the tragedy....why don't they make songs like this anymore...and most people under 30 have probably never heard this beautiful music....
I am 22 years-old, am african and adore both ancient songs like this one and ancient movies!!! I saw The Gay Divorcee four times and still am anxious to see it again!!;) Just thinking about it would keep me awake almost all the night!!!:) LONG LIVE SILVERSCREEN CLASSICS TILL THE END OF MANKIND!!!;)
Also a more recent French version by Laura Fygi from 2007 on an album called Rendez Vous
