  • just seen the alan titichmarsh show where the soldiers where singin letters home based on the letter that this brave man wrote to his family, knowing what could happen him. It must be a really difficult thing to do , write a letter to your loved ones just before you go to war. I am so proud of our boys and girls , its just so wrong that so many are being killed. Im sure Neil is looking down on his family and friends and a day doesnt go pass without them thinking of him. GOD BLESS YOU x

  • I do not know this man personally. But he looks like a great person and i hope he rests in peace. God bless him and his family.

  • Well Said peu423.

I have also served, 15 years, and in the same regiment as Tony (Neil), and we will never forget him and all the other soilders who have given their lives for what they belive in, not that Tony was very politicaly minded, he belived in his mates, and them in him, and he loved the job he had always wanted to do.

Here to his next rememberance day, at his Mum and Dads Pub. in sunny Manchester, RIP mucker. Give them hell in Valhalla.

  • I knew tony when I was younger, I remember playing with water guns and pretending we were soilders. I had a great childhood growing up with tony and he is greatly missed

  • I watched the Fallen last night. The whole program was emotional. Its a shame the general public,on the whole, dont realise how much pain and grief these conflicts are causing the families of those who are lost.Tony and his family,as with all those who have lost loves ones in the same manner, have my total thanks, respect and sincere sympathy for their sacrifice. The letter from this young lad shows clearly how grateful he was for such a loving family,& how dearly he will be missed. RIP

  • x X R.I.P X x

  • I am a Lieutenant with the 3 Battalion the Parachute Regiment, and I have lost a few dear friends over the years, and I can safely tell you that this young man died doing what he believed in, and even though you may think he died for nothing, he would have known that he would have been doing what he was meant to, and what he was born to do. I have an endless respect for people such as him.

  • so sad after this tour tony was supposed to be studying for his a levels, adding to his impressive 16 gcses. then even better had gained a place at sandhurst to become an intelligence officer for the grens. such a bright future lay before him. i hope gods looking after him up there.

  • R.I.P from (longjohn) The Queens Company 80-86

  • Mate love yous o much ill never forget you, had some quality times, always fun ripping robs mum lol, have it large upstairs mate, im always thinking of you.

  • I also watched the documentary, The Fallen, really heartbreaking stuff. We all hear on the news that yet another soldier's life has been taken, but when you actually see the face, the person, the family, it is devastating. Cannot get their faces out of my mind. Stay safe all you lads and lasses out there and come home safely and soon. My heart goes out to all the families that have lost a son or daughter, they are all heroes.

  • watched the fallen saturday, tonys dad reading that letter had me in bits.cant seem to get it out my head, maybe thats a good thing.didn,t actually know him but it seems to me if there were more lads like tony around today the world would be a lot better place.good luck to all those who have lost loved ones xxx

  • i watched the fallen last night and the story of Neil Downes moved me the most with his little sister talking about him and the letter he left which was left to be opened once he had died it was the most emotional piece of footage i have seen x

  • I saw it too.The families can be proud, but Blair should be ashamed. He is earning £50,000 a night for after dinner speeches. He should give that money to the soildiers families.

  • RIP

  • my wishes to the family of another fallen hero x

  • If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand, I never expected or had too much, But if you don't , I'll understand." There was a silence all around the throne Where the saints had often trod As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. "Step forward now, soldier You've borne your burdens well, Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in HELL."
