Huntards just buckshot whole families of them into the dirt and run home with a bag full....That's why they are the most hunted bird, like shooting fish in a barrel...They can claim they went out huntin last weekend to all their buddies then.
@AncientToast u got a problem with hunting??! doves are hard to hunt anyway. you have to shoot them while they are flying ( which is hard to do). i want to see u go dove hunting. probably blow ur tiny little shoulder right off!
I was wondering what kinda birds these were...they flock to my dog's feeder ...and enclosures. They sit on my window boxes waiting for the dogs to go to sleep under the deck and then they peck all the red kibble out, lol.
Then they dust themselves under my oak tree.
The cooing is peaceful...its alot better than hearing the bomb alarm the blue jays squawk out!
True - I've heard them doing that right outside the window before - especially grating when there are 4 or 5 doing that - ;) I've heard other people say various things, but it looks to me like an immature Mourning Dove chick.
Right, exactly - there are a lot of very good hunters out there that are actually doing good things for the ecosystem, but there are quite a few others that miss the "sportsmanly" way of hunting altogether and just kill to do it. Population control is one thing, but that is just despicable in my opinion.
I'm definitely not a "hunter" myself in the traditional sense, I hunt with cameras - as long as I can show there's more than one side to wildlife other than "vermin", I've done my job - :)
I'm a dove hunter. Let me make it known that hunters are also the biggest conservationists out there. I do hunt them, but I also help to propogate their population by planting specific plants to provide them with food and shelter. I also have a pond where they get their water. Keep in mind when you bash hunters like myself that we pump a lot of money into wildlife and the local wildlife departments. Those anti hunters/tree huggers do nothing of that sort. They just protest, rant, rave, and hate.
That's true, some hunters are very good at conservation, especially people who are parts of programs like Ducks Unlimited and the like, where they strive to conserve the land that their quarry lives in. That's very good that you're taking, but replenishing, so there's always a consistant cycle. But just like you can't group everyone who presents themselves as an "anti-hunter" (which I'm not, by the way), you can't group everyone who hunts as a conservationist either.
As I put in my other comment, "the amount of people that hate raccoons are staggeringly high" - I completely understand the concept of both herd management and hunting to provide food for people that need it, but there are a LOT of people - quite a few examples on YouTube in fact, that get a thrill out of watching dogs tear into a live raccoon just for the hell of it. That isn't conservation, that's just violence for the sake of violence. They're not conserving, they're just killing to kill.
So there are a lot of outstanding people that do hunt, but not *every* single hunter is a true conservationist. On the same coin, while some people averse to hunting just bitch and moan without another viewpoint to back it up, I can honestly say I've seen both sides - people that hunt to thin the herd and prolong life for the rest of the species, and people that just like to kill things because they can. The former are true conservationists, the latter are scum as far as I'm concerned.
I read on wikipedia that "70 million birds shot annually in the U.S." why would American people want to kill this beautiful animal. I hope it doesn't have the same fate as the passenger pigeon. Let's be more careful about our animal species.
I'm with you on that one - some people just don't appreciate animals, and view them more as a "nuisance" - the amount of people that hate raccoons is staggeringly high. I can't understand why anyone would want to kill Mourning Doves either, some people just don't appreciate wildlife... :(
Hello! Sorry for the late reply. For this shot, I'm inside with a remote camera controller and the camera is on a motorized panhead, so I'm not actually out there with them - it's a lot easier to get shots when you're not out there to freak them out... :)
hey its me again look last night i found a mourning dove its not that old or young lets say its a teebird anyway when i found it it was hurt pretty badly she bad blood a ll over her feathers i felt o bad just by seeing it so i took it home i rinsed the blood off her wings with warm water and a tiny it of soap and to my suprise it ws nly a very small cut my theory is that it was probably shot with a cheap bb gun those that dont shoot too fast but i took care of eveithing she is getting better
Sorry it took me so long to get back to this comment, it has been a *busy* couple of weeks... :( Sorry to hear that it's injured! I can't understand why people would want to shoot birds with BBs, and even moreso, if they're going to shoot them, why would they just leave them injured like that? Ahh... anyway, how is it doing now?
hey taburineagle it has been a long time since we last talked but my stupid computer broke but im back listen i have somrthing going on on my neighborhood with a bird so i tought hey maybe taburineagle can help there is this grackle its a male grackle he sings at night between 12 am and 4am not continuosly but every once in a while but my question is why is this bird singing at night is it blind or has no eyes what could be causing it? ur friend kantton66.
Interesting! I don't think it has to do with not being able to see, because if it were, there are so many other things that it could use to sense the morning. It might be neurologically impared, like it fell out of the nest or ran into a window but survived, or he might just be calling for his mate - I've heard robins calling back and forth as early as 1am before, so I don't think it's exclusive to that one case...
Thanks! I don't know which egg you're talking about with this video, but I did recently watch an active dove's nest! It didn't work out though, sadly... :(
I think they have like, natural eyeliner around thier eyes, its like a greenish blueish =D there so cute theres a dove nest i protect fomr the little kids since they were eggs, little ugly fuzzy things and now there starting to grow feathers =D the mom lets me sit right by her on the brach.
That's awesome! They do have a little greenish-bluish tint to their eyes, and a lot of iridescence all over their neck. I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to get a very candid shot of a dove's nest myself, but the doves ended up knocking the nest over so I didn't capture the chicks hatching... :(
we were cutting down a tree and found a mourning dove nest one egg was crushed but, one was ok so im trying to incubate it right now its been alive for about 32 hours (i keep candling it to check on it(it moves)) i hope it hatches then we will set it free when it ages
Sure! What kind of site are you posting it on? They do have a very interesting way of walking... I've always loved the way that crows walk more though personally - they seem to walk with attitude! :)
Thanks! Go to the URL at the top-right of the page (the one that starts with http://www.gullswingmedia.com) for a higher-res version of the chick drinking...

How do you "hunt" a dove anyway? They don't even fly away unless you get within a foot of 'em.

taburineagle: "...you can't group everyone who hunts as a conservationist either."
*I agree. And it makes other hunters/conservationists look very bad.
"[people]...that get a thrill out of watching dogs tear into a live raccoon just for the hell of it."
*They make me sick. I hate seeing any animal suffer. If you're going to kill something, do it quickly/humanely.

Hunters hunt 70 million of these birds a year. Mourning dove population is about 430 million.
