and u can also do this same thing in after effects..

duplicate the layer> decrease the saturation by adding hue saturation from effects preset > change the layer mode to overlay.. so do not be stupid or special if u r a mac user!

@JTRUE93 download mlooks from motionvfx its cheap to purchase and very customisable. Though I'm still not comfortable using FCPX for commercial projects.

The way I do it is I add an anamorphic squeeze, bring the whites down, mids up, blacks down a tiny bit, and tint the blacks a tiny bit magenta.

I was really skeptical about this tutorial. The name FinalCutKing is off-putting and the synth muzak at the front really made me think twice about investing a few minutes in your method. That said, I am thoroughly glad I ignored every natural instinct I had and watched your tutorial.

Using overlay, a texture and depth is achieved that plugins and Color seem to lack. I can't believe I never tried this on my own. Your method is superb, even two years after the tutorial. Thanks man.

This is interesting, but if you want to save time, Film Magic Pro has presets that do all of this for you, in many different styles. Also, if you have Final Cut Studio, it comes with Color, which has a preset for this too. I'm sure other plug ins do the same thing.

@murdlok idts, but if u bring it into after effects you can add a brightness filter, turn it up, then alt click and use the wiggle (i cant remember what its called) but use wiggle and change the ratios and itll make it flicker. i think my explanation made it sound harder than it actually is

@MrCheesecakeFilms that's true, but a flicker isn't always appropriate. At that point it can look like a plugin (not always, of course). What's cool about this technique is it adds a depth that usually requires using special lenses (Letus, etc) and 10K lights. Using overlay forces a depth to the video which is why I found this method profound. Not that you are wrong, just that this has advantages as well.

I think what everyone don't realize is that once you get past color correction, your video still won't look cinematic if you have a shaky camera work. Not saying your video is shaky, just noting it cuz other "film look" tutorials don't look cinematic at all

@TsRaceDocs Yea same here! It wont let me do that to multiple clips. What you can do though is delete all of the spaces between the flips to combine them. like when there are two clips right next to eachother touching, which they usually are, you click on the line right between them then it will combine them

@yurgayimcool for color correction you need a editing software such as ffinal cut or sony vegas. Applications like iMovie will work but not as good because you can't change colours just contrast brightness etc
