All war veterans say the same things: war is terrible, they've seen things they try to forget. We should always remember that, and what he says about wars being political. People starting wars for utterly ridiculous reasons, over nothing, over who has the bigger toy in the sandbox.
I'd love to just sit down and chat with Christopher Lee. He just reminds me so much of my late grandfather: everything from the voice to the looks and even, to an extent, his experiences in WWII. Great men...
One thing that always impresses me about Chrispher lee is that he talks about distant history (e.g. he mentions the British civil war here) with the same gravity as recent events. Listening to him segwey into talking about the Civil war, I suddenly have a much starker image of it.
@inkstersco Well, it's only "distant" history to us, because we were born after it happened - to him, it's just something that happened in his lifetime. The older you get, the faster time seems to go by, so to him, 60 years ago probably seems more like 20 or 30. My Grandma remembered quite well a lot about growing up in WWII Europe...and she didn't talk about it as if it were some ancient history, because when you live through it, it's part of who you are-it shaped you.
@sonbuhitsunei That's well said. It reminds me of the way the elves in Middle-Earth talk about events thousands of years ago like they happened yesterday. Obviously Tolkien was aware of this, as I'm sure his experiences in the trenches felt like yesterday even as he worked on his mythology into his 80's.
world war 2 was the worst war in history its been recorded in the book of world records. over 70 million lives and possibly more were lost and thats not including the amount of damage and machines lost. there has been no war that has been more devastating or brutal and thats not arguable because its true
@Gilmaris I think he meant as a civil war. It was a brutal war but I don't think it was particularly the worst but since he lived when it happened who am I to argue.
@Gilmaris Check your facts. The American civil war was no where near as worse as WW2. There was only about 700,000 deaths in the civil war, but 70 million in WW2.
@BendikBS Check your reading. I didn't even MENTION WWII. I was comparing the American civil war with the SPANISH CIVIL WAR. Jeez. Oh, and that's 50 million for WWII.
@Gilmaris JEEZ. The civil war was a pussy war.. there were far more casualties in ww2 than in the fucking civil war... Just because it's a part of american history doesen't make it so fucking great as you make it out to be...
@pilotbutterfly Obviously, since there were more people fighting, on more fronts, with more advanced weapons. But of the two, the War of Northern Aggression was the one with the most American casualties - ~625,000 dead to WWII's 405,399.
@SonofPencilHead That's because americans weren't fighting alot in ww2.. The people that actually fought was the russians and the british and some other european countries. America only fought the japanese which is on the other side of the planet... Ofcourse there would be more american casualties in a war that played out in America.
srsly, America just joined in to say that they were in it later..
@pilotbutterfly The United States joined the war because her allies were being threatened by the Nazis, and in response to an unprovoked attack on a naval installation. US intervention was even decisive.
You back your allies, or you lose them. You retaliate when someone bombs your base, or you get people walking all over you.
Yeesh, you sound like you've been watching too much Hetalia.
@pilotbutterfly Pity, then, that you chose to learn the profanities.
Your outlook, with respect to the United States, is similar to that of an anime (they have anime in Norway, right?) that assigns each country a sort of 'mascot' character, which then interact in comedic or dramatic ways. A country cannot properly be represented so simply, so important details may suffer.

@pilotbutterfly What the hell are you talking about? Was I comparing the American civil war to WWII? NO: I was comparing it to the SPANISH CIVIL WAR. And a "pussy war"? The US civil war had VERY HEAVY casualties, on both sides. And what does American history have to do with it? I'm Norwegian, you twat.

I'm from Poland and I'm proud that Mr. Lee was at Monte Cassino with the Poles. I didn't know about it before I watched this interview.

@MrPineappleman93 Italian*, and he is so annoying indeed XD

@lThelJokerl Why is a translator even necessary? Christopher Lee speaks fluent Italian.

Possibly, but even then I would say the American civil war was worse, in terms of both scale as well as casualties.
