I remember seeeing the whole documentary about their season. i had never heard about them until then but you didn't need to. It's moments like those that make football what it is
@19127gallagher Mind you, the reason that staying in the Football League was so important was the money it brings, without which Carlisle United might have folded. But yes, you're right, this is why the games are played.
i was at this game.....craziest one ive ever been to....didnt show brightwells 30 yard strike tho to get us level....we went down 2 years later but came right back up....dosnt matter what level you watch things like this makes history!! UTB
@SeadogErk AFC will be back at this level or thereabouts though mate, keep the faith. I have no ties to Scarborough (well I played as them on Championship Manager once, Adam Jewell was fucking unstoppable but it doesn't really count...) however I think any club that has to restart from scratch should have nationwide backing almost, takes incredible loyalty and drive from the fans. All the best!
(Same goes for Town actually, not sure how you feel about them though...)
@moleccfc Glad to hear it. Your owners must have been some of the all-time worst, they were basically gangsters weren't they? (correct me if I'm wrong)
@brodftw yeah they were, he had run barrow fc into the ground and all our money dried up when a certain gangster in liverpool got executed, and we had a minutes silence for him, we are better off now as non-league and fan owned than league with no idea what was happening at the club
As a Scarborian it's very hard to watch this as it pretty much killed our football team. Not only was he not even a Carlisle player but he was signed after the transfer window had closed.
THEN HE WANTED TO STAY AT CARLISLE BUT THE CUNTS WOULDN'T HAVE HIM AND SENT HIM BACK TO SWINDON WHO DIDN'T WANT HIM EITHER SO HE ENDED UP IN NON LEAGUE ANYWAY SO HE MIGHT AS WELL NOT SCORED
from a leeds fan this was and is the most memorable finale ever in a match! to save a football club from extinction is amazing...grass root and passion is amazing!
being a Carlisle fan all of my life, i was only a little boy when this happened, but this video makes me so proud to be a Cumbrian and a Carlisle Fan :')
i remember reading about this ins fourfourtwo some 8 or 9 years ago, great to see the video of it what with the fans raiding the field in jubliation. man what an amazing feeling that would be! props from canada
This video is still amazing. I think of it every now and then or someone sends me a link from somewhere and it's just as great each time I watch it. I'm a Fulham fan but love seeing the "lower" leagues as well.
Saw him playing for Lewes Town a few years back and he us still living of that goal. It is what football is all about. No matter what the lows there is always a moment like that to keep you going back for more. Reminds me of Robbie Reinelt's goal for Brighton vs Hereford, which while not as late and dramatic, it did send Hereford down instead of us. This after we were miles adrift at the bottom of the table for ages.
@planetrockford Scarborough got relegated instead of Carlisle, then about 8 years later Scarborough went out of existence altogether. Carlisle just about avoided being relegated out of the league most seasons for the following 5 seasons or so after this until they eventually did get relegated to the Conference, but got promoted back to the league after one season out.
@schizolightbulb I would never has guessed it would have been Scarborough, I do remember after they got relegated though when their crowds were under 1,000. Sad ending for them but Carlisle United are doing ok right now. Thanks very much for answering my original post. All the best. Dave, Middlesbrough fan.
as a swindon fan i always think our eternal booing of jimmy glass was the reason he was loaned out, so we had a part to play, sad thing is jimmy glass never played a game of professional football again and had to retrain as an i.t worker as he couldn't get a pro contract at any club
You don't have to be a Carlisle United fan to appreciate what an amazing moment that was, although I can't imagine what it must have felt like in the ground!
i was there, this game. i am a newcastle fan who also has a massive interest in carlisle, i was 10 years old for this game. you can just see me on the video when he scores on the pitch haha! great video, thanks for posting, as far as im concerned the greatest footballing moment ever!
I am a Rangers fan and everyone knows how successful we are domestically, the trophies, great European victories that have happened over the years and the incredible highs supporting my team has given me and I wouldn't swap them for the world.
But just for this moment I wish I was a Carlisle fan. Incredible, nothing like it.
I was at the game that day and even now I still can't believe it when the ball hits the back of the net. I've watched videos of the goal thousands of times since and it still amazes me and sends shivers down my spine now. People think of that goal as "the goal that saved Carlisle from relegation", it wasn't, it was the goal that saved Carlisle United football club full stop. No words can ever do justice to the significance of this goal.

Haha I'm only 22, I'm an Evertonian, I'm from Liverpool and yet I remember this like it was yesterday and I think it is totally amazing. As a bluenose I know what it's like to have to get a result in the last game of the season to avoid relegation
Wow, I was reading up on goals scored by goal keepers and this was listed as the best of all time. I'd never heard of Jimmy Glass so I thought I wonder if it's on youtube. And well... watching him smash the ball in the back of the net and the supporters reaction made me shiver just to imagine what Jimmy must have been feeling at that moment. Its moments like this that make English football so great!
@1927gallagher OF COURSE IT IS COS WHO WANTS TO WATCH MAN UTD V LIVERPOOL WHEN U CAN WATCH A TEAM OF UNKNOWNS PLAY ANOTHER TEAM OF UNKNOWNS IT'S A DISGRACE CARLISLE AREN'T THE MAIN ATTRACTION ON SKY EVERYWEEK SO EVERYONE COULD SIT AND WATCH AND SAY WHO'S HE AND WHO'S HE AND TURN THE TELLY OFF THIS IS SHITE
@DAJAZDJ1 Mate, I might be in the minority, but if Man U and Liverpool were playing in my back garden I'd draw the curtains. Boring, boring, boring. Football is a sport, not the incredibly overhyped media circus of the PL.
Whilst I wouldn't 'draw the curtains', I think you're missing the point. Since when is football about 'recognizing people. Its about playing and watching the sport I know and love and to me, every level has its positives...Ioved to play Sunday league and the drama, passion and excitement I got out of that was 2nd to none..
Dont even support carlisle, but thats fucking amazing.. Ive got goose bumps watching that haha. I wish I could feel what Jimmy felt when he scored that goal!
@TomJardineCUFC the absolute only sad thing about this incredible moment, is the demise of Scarborough a few years later :( I know it's not Carlisle's "fault", just terrible to see a club go under.
Best of luck to the likes of Kettering and any other clubs in that kind of position right now
I'm American and have little vested interest in soccer (typical, I know), but watching this video never gets old! What a dramatic ending, the winner from the on-loan goalie, no less! I love how the carlisle fan they're interviewing for the piece gets choked up and is almost at a loss of words when describing the moment when Jimmy Glass scored, years after the fact. If only people on this side of the pond could show that kind of love and passion for their teams, regardless of their histories
Although, as a Brit and a lifelong football (aka soccer) fan, I have to say that the US football equivalent for me is watching Doug Flutie's "Hail Mary" touchdown for Boston College. Just awesome moments that transcend sporting boundaries: in both cases you don't have to follow the sport to know how much it meant to the fans.
@pianoman576 Fantastic footballing moment. Much like the Great Escape of 2005 with my beloved West Bromwich Albion, brings a tear to my eye every time i see the video!
this is why we all love football! you can look at stats as much as you want, but unlike circket and rugby, u never no whats going to happen! long live jimmy glass (not a carlisle fan btw)
I also have no link to Carlisle at all, but this goal always makes me smirk like a Cheshire Cat. I remember seeing it plastered in the national media & just about every major sports round-up contained the clip of the goal. I love the commentators reaction & his, "Jimmy Glass get up there, you might as well for heaven's sake!" I heard at the time that the club that had been relegated because of this had tried to sue Carlisle for something daft like 'misuse of personnel' because Jimmy had scored!
man u fans, chelsea fans, aresenal fans will never know what real football is about. days like this is the most epic example of true football. even if their teams did drop that low... they would have stopped supporting them a long time before that anyway
wow. this is the first time I see this. I just...wow. I wasnt prepared for this. this is what football is all about. nothing can ever quite touch me like the beautiful game can.
That legend went to my small, Catholic boys school, I am only in my third year, but I know generations that are proud to say he went to our school; with only 120 players in each year, he makes me proud.
I'm a Leeds fan, and tears welled up in my eyes as I saw this that day. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Fans of many football clubs dream of moments like these, Carlisle fans lived through it. Fair play Carlisle, fair play Jimmy, now who was that pretender to his throne, Roy of the who ???
its carlisle united ofcourse we pull magic out of the bags when we need to . were just mint .. jimmy glass the reason i love carlisle.. carlisle till i die!
remember this moment so well pure football magic. i fuckin hate carlisle the dirtty bastards but this moment makes you realise what footballs all about. fairytale stuff!
Can you believe after all that they didnt even offer poor old Jimmy a full time contract??!! he is a taxi driver these days, I bet he never stops telling people that story!!
I'm a Liverpool fan, and that was one of the most amazing moments in football. To see Jimmy Glass knock it in and the crowd go mental kinda summed up the passion that fans feel and how players should feel. I can't believe it was 11 years ago though! I looked for this vid to show my boyfriend (he's not really into club football) and told him it was only a couple of years ago!!!
Now, I'm a Chelsea fan.. But this might be my favourite football moment ever. Truly unbelievable. Every time I watch it I want to celebrate like it just happened lol.
i was that that carilsle game, ive got a season ticket at man utd but we didnt go went to carlisle game instead glad i did it was unreal never will anything ever happen lyk that again.thanks for your comment.

This is why we travel thousands of miles a year to watch hours and hours of dross in the freezing rain.
Nothing else in life provides these type of moments.
