i really like this. sounds like blue jay way by the beatles in parts. if he'd done it acoustic it would have been pointless as it would have never matched nick drakes version, which of course will never be bettered, but this offers a new prespective on the song.
I'm a massive Weller fan and seen him over a dozen times live. i've just discovered Nick Drake via this cover version and i'm hooked already.
Gotta say tho, i feel this isn't a very good cover version by weller, to much happening in the song for me, and so far away from the simple beauty of the original by nick drake
He's got a great voice and could potentially make this work very well but the music is too chaotic, too experimental, it confuses the listener and I had to stop listening because of it. :( He should do a toned down version, far simpler and it would keep the atmosphere far more intact.
I can actually appreciate a 'good cover' done by someone else when I hear one and I have heard many very excellent Nick Drake Covers...this one however is not one of them. But I gave it a go, I listened and gave it a chance-sadly it failed to impress me in an epic way. There's no more I can say but that it's got nothing to do with another person covering a song as such-it's how you go about covering it...and this version here has in no way complimented the original artist, or the cover artist.
To be fair I rate them both albeit for different styles and sounds. +Even if I didn't rate Nick Drake or Weller and compared the two with an totally new and open mind I could tell this was an awful cover. There's songs Nick did that I don't like even as a big admirer of him. The only thing attempting a tune here is Weller's voice and, it's not carrying the right emotion for this song. If he performed Wildwood in the exact same format as this I bet we'd all prefer the wildwood original any day.
Sorry, but I like Nick Drake a lot and I love the song, I equally like Paul Weller and do rate him highly BUT-the background not so atmospheric effort that is on here as presented was a mess of noise and his voice singing over the top of the aforementioned tuneless dirge didn't really do anything or anyone justice...not to someone who appreciates the true beauty and haunting qualities of the original or the work of Weller in their own individual rights. Not actually impressed it's a real shame.
One of Drakes most beautiful and haunting songs. An English man who left this world much too soon. Weller's voice captures that same magic but his age and human experience add to his rendition. Tis beautiful!
