Puerto Rico Board Game Setup

What would be a good way to make this game a bit easier (less overwhelming) in the first play for beginners?

I was thinking of not considering the special functions of buildings.

Another option would be to take out the captain, and only get points by building.

Any thoughts?

@koosjebig I was told some people took out the purple buildings to make the game easier. You can read more or post questions on board game geek dot com. Its a great website for board games.
