@nottinghamcity1 If it weren't for Derby, Clough probably would never have done what he did at Notts. Plus, he was probably a bit more outspoken in his youth at Derby which makes it more memorable for the neutral.
Agreed with the sentiment, though - he should be remembered for his greatest achievements, not his stepping stones.
Hi, just wanted to update you all on the progress of my book. I am putting together a book of memories from people who met the great Brian Clough. I have had lots of fantastic stories so far and have four publishers interested, so its looking very promising.

Yeah good manager and all, but a bloody Homophobic twat of a man who destroyed Justin Fashanu's career. Good Riddance.
''Where do you go if you want a loaf of bread?' I asked him. 'A baker's, I suppose.' 'Where do you go if you want a leg of lamb?' 'A butcher's.' 'So why do you keep going to that bloody poofs' club?''
Clough.
"A bloody poof!" That's how his manager at Nottingham Forest football club, Brian Clough, described his £1 million star player, Justin Fashanu.
errr, yes, yes he was. He was just part of millions of people who were homophobic at the time. Fashanu was used to it, and it was the norm. You cannot accuse him of not being a great man because he followed the norms of the time. Do not forget that he was one of the first to use a black player, Viv Anderson, regulary which was pretty revolutionary
He was a great manager, but to say 'Great Man' is a falsity. A great man wouldn't have followed the norm at the time and understood that Fash was a brilliant talent in English football regardless of his sexuality. He really did give him a lot of stick.
Race and sexuality are different. I know he was one of the first to use black players in the English league but racism became more socially unacceptable before homophobia, that doesn't mean that either where ever acceptable to start off with.
Fine- he could have realised, but maybe it was something to do with Fashanu. He couldn't hold it down with a single team, even before he came out. He played well went playing for the Saints, but generally was unlucky when it came to it, as they didn't have the money to find him, and there were so many good forwards at the time that managers must have found it hard to fit him in... Im just putting it out there.
@merton8181 Thats a weak argument. Being a nazi was the norm in Germany for a time, having slaves was the norm for a time in the US denying women equal rights used to be the norm. All of it is wrong now and was wrong then.
While it is true that Cloughie didn't win any European trophies of any note, how many managers could boast of taking two clubs, both fierce rivals from forgotten clubs of the second division to the top of the First division. or all the fans out there who don't realise it (or who only know of the Premier League) this would be like Alan Shearer taking Coventry to the top of the Premier league and then into Europe, I would like to see many managers do that now
Didn"t win any European Trophies of note? what planet are You on! Clough lead Forest to the 79 European Cup & defended it the next yr 1980... are You a thick cunt or something (prawn sandwich brigade)
Prawn Sandwich brigade my arse. You twat, course I remember he won those trophies and I didn't mean to denegrate the man (who was a legend) no go learn some fucking manners you cunt

yes clough was a genius, but you have to remember he did a great job at derby(a little shitty club) he did a great job at forest(who were also a little shitty club) but he failed the only big job he ever had at LEEDS UNITED, thats why he failed, because he couldn't handle a big job
Yes, but I think the main reason he failed at Leeds was because the players had been under Revie for so long it was hard for him to change the whole setup there in such a short time. In those days, many players stayed at a club for more or less all of their careers. I wouldn't say he 'couldn't handle a big job' its just the classic case of you win some you lose some. He wasn't an FA Yes man either which is why they didn't consider him. Revie failed at England that was a big job.
You Leeds bell end. Clough wanted to change a filthy cheating Club into a respectable organization - you are right he failed in that respect. But look at Leeds now!! just where you belong. You are shit - and always have been.
he was too controversial for the england selectors and we lost out as a result of their timidness and fear of him being a loose cannon out of their control
...Clough is a legend, proper genius!! If Clough can get the shit that is Derby and Forest to achieve so much he should have been given the England job!!
haha, and another. "If Clough can get the shit that is Derby and Forest ...." explain this ?? You choose any team, they needed someone or something to turn it around. Man United and Liverpool etc did not just spring out of thin air as top teams! In our and forests case it happend to be Clough. Who or what was it for yours? Or was your team naturally league champions from the day they began?
Brian Clough was once engaged to my great Aunt. I live on the same road....VALLEY ROAD... in Middlesbrough, the road Brian Clough was born on, every time I go past his former house, I look up at the plaque that says 'Brian Clough' lived here.
seeing a team like that win something as great as the european cup, is special, and alot more special than the liverpools and manchester uniteds winning it, there is no doubt he inspired the english game, players who played for him and became managers would have taken his style on board and no-doubt it would help, and i just hope that now, Nigel Clough and even give Derby county even half of what his father gave them, and give the rams fans another era to be proud of
From a Manchester City fan, he was a truly great manager, player and person, i think martin o'neil sums him up pretty well, he wouldn't be where he was today if it wasn't for cloughie, and also, it was good to see a team, unexpectedly become great, and people may disagree, but who would have ever have had Forest down as 2 times european cup winners, even ask alot of people today, and they probably won't believe forest won it twice, but the fact is they did, and to me,
A remarkable player,manager and man. A winner, an entertainer, a socialist, a maverick, a one-off, a legend.
Hope your'e competing with and having frank exchanges with Shankly, Paisley, Busby and Jock Stein. You were wonderful. God bless yer. A Liverpool fan .
The One and Only.....The Legend that is simply...Cloughie....He was the manager of Derby when I went to my first game with my dad...Now at 42 and living in Wales I still go to Derby with my own four kids...Nigel, you've got your work cut out to emulate your dad...but if you've got half the spirit you're old man had you'll do for us JW
brian clough will go down as one of the greats but sorry derby forest leicester and boro fans but the greatest manager of all time is sir alex ferguson. fact.
Everyone is entitled to their views. I respect that. But I have had this discussion at work so many times with a mate of mine. For me Clough was the best because (and with the greatest of respect) he accomplished amazing goals at clubs much "smaller" than Man utd. He had alot less money at his disposal and also accomplished back to back european cups with Forest, something united are still waiting for under fergie.
forest did win back to back european cups but in an era when it was much easier to do so. you played malmo in one of those finals! the fact is fergie has won 23 trophies at united.clough doesnt come anywhere near that. there is no argument in my opinion and if you ask most non forest/derby fans, they'd say the same. did clough bring thru players like fergie does? did clough win 3 leagues in a row? the treble? At the end of this season this argument will be put to bed.
Malmo was there league Champions at the time, Fergie has had time and money, nothing compared to what Clough had, same as Paisley, also Clough and Paisley are the only 2 British/English Managers to win back to back European Cups, Fergie never has. The amount of cash Man Utd have had and spent they should of won it alot more.
i'm sorry but if your tellin me that it was harder to win the european cup when clough and paisley were around your off your head pal! and by the way paisley inherited that liverpool team! i'm not sayin clough wasnt a great manager, he was but to say he's the greatest ever is way off the mark. fergie's won more trophies than anyone else and he's built 4 teams at united. clough once said, fergie for all his titles hasnt got 2 of what i've got, and i dont mean balls. well he has now!
also, the game changed dramatically since the clough era and money has been spent at liverpool chelsea and arsenal and only liverpool have won a european cup out of the 3 since united did it in 99. i respect brian cloughs achievments but theres only one godfather of english football in my book and he's got the trophies to prove it.
My personal feelings are that he was and will always be the greatest of all time. I don't think that he will EVER be surpassed.
I also realise that here at Leicester we have alot to thank him for too.
Our best manager (Martin O'Neill) learned from him - self admittedly - and promptly led us to the premiership and europe (Via coca-cola cup) So by my estimation, our success under O'Neill was alot to do with what he learned from Brian Clough and I will be eternally grateful for that :)
A true hero and a great man, maybe he achieved some cups with other clubs, but he was a Derby County man through and through. A great man and a True Derby legend .

Or was your team naturally league champions from the day they began?

His best quality was doing amazingly well with limited resources. I think David Moyes at Everton is today's equivalent.

Ok. I love Brian Clough.
He was excellent for BOTH sides!
Now I think that Brian would prefer if there was a bit of peace on his behalf!
But then again even he likes a good row ;)

brian clough will go down as one of the greats but sorry derby forest leicester and boro fans but the greatest manager of all time is sir alex ferguson. fact.
jamieemmo1974 3 years ago
Everyone is entitled to their views. I respect that. But I have had this discussion at work so many times with a mate of mine. For me Clough was the best because (and with the greatest of respect) he accomplished amazing goals at clubs much "smaller" than Man utd. He had alot less money at his disposal and also accomplished back to back european cups with Forest, something united are still waiting for under fergie.

forest did win back to back european cups but in an era when it was much easier to do so. you played malmo in one of those finals! the fact is fergie has won 23 trophies at united.clough doesnt come anywhere near that. there is no argument in my opinion and if you ask most non forest/derby fans, they'd say the same. did clough bring thru players like fergie does? did clough win 3 leagues in a row? the treble? At the end of this season this argument will be put to bed.
jamieemmo1974 3 years ago
I'm neither Derby or Forest, I'm Leicester.
We will have to agree to disagree, is that fair enough? :)
Planetwatts 3 years ago
Malmo was there league Champions at the time, Fergie has had time and money, nothing compared to what Clough had, same as Paisley, also Clough and Paisley are the only 2 British/English Managers to win back to back European Cups, Fergie never has. The amount of cash Man Utd have had and spent they should of won it alot more.
duncabbin 2 years ago
i'm sorry but if your tellin me that it was harder to win the european cup when clough and paisley were around your off your head pal! and by the way paisley inherited that liverpool team! i'm not sayin clough wasnt a great manager, he was but to say he's the greatest ever is way off the mark. fergie's won more trophies than anyone else and he's built 4 teams at united. clough once said, fergie for all his titles hasnt got 2 of what i've got, and i dont mean balls. well he has now!
jamieemmo1974 2 years ago
also, the game changed dramatically since the clough era and money has been spent at liverpool chelsea and arsenal and only liverpool have won a european cup out of the 3 since united did it in 99. i respect brian cloughs achievments but theres only one godfather of english football in my book and he's got the trophies to prove it.
