so why not add a 3d camera to make it move on its own, to gauge depth perception. People have been using the xbox kinect sensor to do that. I would also like to see one with a video projector inside it :D The future is now people!

I've got about $3k in mine and its almost done. It depends on what kind of material you use. If your going to buy all aluminum parts - yeah, you can spend about 10k easy. But if you build the thing out of plywood inside and plastic styrene it can be make for under $4k. Looks and acts the same as the real R2. I've seen all metal droid right next to wooden and plastic ones at CV and you can't tell the difference. The wooden ones are a lot lighter and easier to move around.

Dosen't seem like the electronics are that advanced or complicated. The damn thing is remote controlled as well. All it does is roll, extend a telescope, open panels, blast a fire extinguisher. and spin its fucking head. It may be just me, but for 10 grand I would expect the fucking thing would do more than that. Also, it takes them 2 to 3 years to make one of these things. I really hope these guys don't plan on making any money from this with that sort of construction time.

lol the gadget i was referring too was not a $150 ipod. I was talking about home made gadgets that people send months planning and manufacturing for the rest of the builders. Those get expensive. But you can build a really inexpensive one for under a grand easily but it will made out of plastic.
