Umm. Okay. Christians are a different breed. We don't care who gets the glory. First, listen to an interview. And then make a statement. Does it even matter what it's called. You are pretty much wrong. Tait is an amazing singer and performer with energy. God gets the glory dude.
Maybe they should also get T-Mac and Kevin Smith, then DC Talk can get back together, only with ex-newsboys members! BTW....what about John James? He should come back too.
Guess you were wrong... Just saw their show in Ottawa last week and they rocked the place!! They were incredible!! Michael Tait is bringing a new groove to the band... yes it is different, no it's not a bad thing! God had this figured out and knew what the outcome would be... Glory to God in all things. :)
@lyndalaj I don't disagree with anything you said, and never did. They are amazing, and Tait is as excellent as expected. But I still say there is a cognitive dissonance to referring to them as "Newsboys". It really should be a different band and brand.
@pastordice All I am saying is who are we to judge? Unfortunately, like for most bands (christian or not), fans tend to identify the band with the lead singer... but a band is so much more than just the lead singer! Jeff, Duncan and Jody are the newsboys just as much as Peter was. Why wouldn't they have the right to keep their band name? Especially since 3 out of 4 band members are still IN the band. It's unfortunate for these guys... if not a bit disrespectful, don't you think?
@lyndalaj Again, I agree. I never questioned their right to keep the name only the wisdom in doing so. I mean no disrespect to them, just wondered if they would have been better served to choose a new name for this new band. Personally, after hearing and loving the new stuff, I'm not sure it mattered one way or the other.
@mobundick: I totally agree. I saw him and I was sitting in the front row, he was sooo pompous. Sorry to you all who disagree, but it's sooo true. He was just staring at me, the whole time, I was really creeped out. I want Peter Furler back!
I'm not totaly impressed with Tait as the frontman...but hey, I heard 'Glorious' w/ him and i gotta admit it wasn't bad at all...of course I am a Peter guy all the way...but still...he is not bad..i mean at least give him a shot...
I did finally get to see Tait as frontman at Disney's Night of Joy (the same night Peter sang lead for the last time) My verdict is this: Tait is a serviceable if not excellent singer and entertainer, but the effect of having him as frontman is exactly as suspected. It just doesn't fit, and I'm not sure if it will ever stop being distracting. The Newsboys now almost seem to be a cover band of themselves. It's a very strange effect.
I saw Newsboys in Lincoln, NE at the State Fair. It was probably the best Newsboys concert that I've been to since the 1990's. Michael Tait did a phenomenal job.
I'm just a guy with a radio show, a camera, and an opinion. I'm also a Newsboys fan. Is it your belief that only people who have been in a band should be allowed to express their opinion?
No, but your statements come across as being opinionated against Mike before he's really even gotten a chance. Give it time, he's not Peter...but you never know, you might like the new Newsboys.
I saw them at Big Ticket in Michigan. It was BAD really BAD. I got to hang out back stage, Tait and Peter were both there, Tait didnt have the time of day for anyone, Peter did. Tait ran around like he was a gift to everone and like his poop didnt stink! That carried over on stage too. Someone who was with me never had seen the Newsboys before, said his first impression of Tait was that he was"fake". I agree.
I've never known Tait to be anything but a stand up guy in the few chances I've had to meet him. You may have caught him on an off night, so lets give him the benefit of the doubt and keep the comments to whether or not Tait works as lead singer of the Newsboys, not the personal stuff. Some others I talked to who were at Big Ticket were surprised at how much he "fit", others still didn't like it. It still feels weird to me, but I'll withhold until I see it live.
hey It dosent matter who is singing or the name of the band its all about Prasiing God no offense sounds like some people may be falling into Mediaa a little hear its not about the gossip and stuff Its About Jesus All about HIM! GOD ROCKS ALOT!
Okay I have seen them 2 times now and the first time i wanted to cry. The last time last weekend i wanted to leave, All the race remarks is very weird. Ya we are all christian but he turned we are free into a black slavery song. To preachy between every single song. It really drove me nuts. I have seen them for the last time, Peter call me when your coming back!
So basically everyone is probably going to jump all over me for saying this, so people chill out it is MY opinion!
I do not like Tait, I haven't since I first saw him in concert. I got the impression that he was a little pompous. He did bizarre dance moves and he pretty much creeps me out. I don't really like his voice either, and I cannot see it going with the newsboys at ALL. I was really hoping they would bring back Paul or Phil Joel, but I know it isn't my decision. Again, just my thoughts.
I KNOW! WOW! Don't get me wrong, I liked dcTalk growing up but they were more semi-christian rap when I was growing up. When I found out about it I was thinking "What the crap, are you serious!" I've been listening to Newsboys my whole life practically. I just think it's insane. Yeah, Peter kinda freaked me out when I was a little kid. lol. but this is just not right. I don't think I will ever get used to the idea of Tait being lead singer If they change to rap like dcTalk I will totally freak!
Wow, that's totally not right miss. Micheal Tait had nothing to do with rap music in DC Talk. It was Tobymac who handled the rap. Micheal even had a straight up rock band called Tait.
Sorry, I don't care about the switch because we're not even supposed to be looking at the artists themselves. Yeah, Furler has been frontman for the band for years and we're used to hearing his voice, etc etc, but the music is supposed to be uplifting the LORD, not "oh he's my favorite" or whatever. The Newsboys are not some sacred singing group--they are a group of musicians who were called by God to spread his message through song. It just so happens that now a new guy joins to do so.
It's been just over five weeks since the "big announcement" and your posting your thoughts on this video. I'm curious to know what you, pastordice, presently think about Michael Tait replacing Peter Furler as the Newsboys lead singer. Have you gotten used to the idea yet?
For the record, I have not. But, it's not for the lack of trying!
Thanks for asking :) My thoughts haven't changed a ton, but I have softened to the idea a bit. I'll have to see them live, or hear the first album where he does vocals to really know. By the way, I've been listening this week to the new album, impressive stuff, maybe I'll throw a video review up today.
yes it is weird to think that peter furler is no longer the lead singer, but I heard somewhere that peter furler will still be the lead singer for the albums and recordings but i am not sure.
Can I tell you how freakishly similar your opinion is to mine? Don't get me wrong. I love Michael. His voice is astounding. But he's NOT Peter Furler! Seriously, I grew up with Newsboys. Ever since I was 4 or 5, they've been one of my favorites. And Pete makes them Newsboys. It's like what you said about the sandwich. Chicken is great. But a Big Mac with chicken isn't a Big Mac. I've heard Newsboys songs on Youtube being sung by Michael and it's TOO weird. They should change their name.
I can not agree with you more! I don't see your opinion as being discouraging...nor do I think you are dissing Michael. You are making an accurate observation with which I highly concur! Whether we like it or not, Peter IS the Newsboys...his distinctive appearance & his vocal characteristic is what we, the listeners, see & hear when we listen to their music. It is what it is. And, as talented as Michael is, his voice cannot match what is conjured when we hear him vocalize lyrics
to music formerly recorded & performed by Peter. If it HAS to be that Peter steps down as lead singer, it's possible this can be remedied by altering the name of the band. Michael deserves recognition for his talent & he's not going to get the majority vote if it feels like he's an impostor. I think he's GREAT! LOVE his voice... but it just does not work.
have some respect ! check it out before you dis it ! i mean you tour for 22 years hardcore and see how it is ! Michael tait is a legend fits so well seenit live. gives peter more time to write some solid songs ! RETARD YOU ARE ,,, call yourself a pastor
hey its about glorifying God, Peter wants to go and spend time with his family like Jody did, You need to get a life if u are a pastor because that is just wrong what you are saying Peter and Michael are both great guys and you are sounding a little racist
Why wasn't it an issue when John James left the Newsboys and Peter took over as lead singer? Shouldn't they have changed the name then too according to your reasoning?Look at the history of Newsboys... change after change after change...
This is the merging of two superbands. Excited that Michael is back on the scene and I think it will gel well. Also... so do many... stop reading the negative reviews... there are many, many positives!
Actually Not really a big Newsboys fan until I saw them in Redlands this past week... Michael Tait is great singer and seems to bring alot to them
their show is real cool
and incorporate a few DC Talk songs..
What the heck.. DC Talk is gone since their other singer is all solo
LET THIS THING Develop.. the weird thing is they are releasing a new record w the past singers voice on it but touring with Michael Tait currently who has joined the band !!!
You are so right. It would have made better sense to ask Phil Joel back, even if it was temporary until they could find a permanent replacment. It's not because i don't like Michael Tait because he's really a talented guy. I can see new material working but the classic newsboys songs don't fit His well defined sound and vice versa. It's like a Vegas wedding that should be anulled. Mike is awesome in "Tait" and it fits like a glove. Newsboys have a distict sound. Bring back John James!
Dude, no need to wrap your mind around it as it's really not your choice. I strongly believe and also have read, this was done with much prayer and consideration.
I didn't like it when John James left the Newsboys but it brought the band into a new era and God used that.
If you are this stressed out over a band member change, maybe you should re think your life. There are higher and more important things to think on, Don't let this keep you up at night. That's just sad.
Thank you for your consideration for my stress and sleeping habits, but I can assure you I'm doing fine. I'm not losing sleep or stressed about it at all, just processing it as are many Newsboys fans. I understand it has nothing to do with me personally, but there are plenty of things I try to wrap my mind around that aren't directly my choice. Like why the McRib isn't an everyday menu item at McDs? Seriously, that's a great sandwich.
I totally agree........this is very strange. I pray Peter is ok since I can't imagine why else this would happen. I too don't think it should even keep the name Newsboys.....I have no desire to see them in concert as I do every summer. I like the sandwich analogy :o)
As someone who has tickets to an upcoming Newsboys concert (April 6 Toronto) I look at this from two perspective. The first is the change itself, change can be good, and I'm excited for them. The second is how it went about. I bought my tickets expecting to see Peter (as I expect many people did). If they've known for over a month why didn't they tell us then. This has a bait and switch feel to it. I love the Boys, but right now I'm not sure I even want to go to the concert.
Glad Peter and the gang didn't confide in you. You seem to be at odds with the direction GOD has taken these gents. I'm not so sure it's important whether or not you fully comprehend what's going on. Don't take it personally, but there are hands at work beyond your scope. I'm sure it's refreshing to have an opinion and to have the freedom to express it. That's a lovely realization. However, there are times when that still small voice requests a bit of quiet. This might be one of those times.
Not at odds, and I would agree that in the eternal scope of things it means nothing whether I "comprehend" it. Though I do sense a bit of condescension in your comment, I thank you for adding to the discussion. I would argue that opening up this conversation is exactly what Newsboys fans (including myself) need to work through the change.
Shouldn't you trust that GOD knows what he's doing? Did you happen to think that maybe Peter is losing his voice, focusing on his family, or something else that's going on in his personal life? I understand you seem to be confused. but if you believe that Peter is a man of God and a praying man.. don't you think he went to God first? As for picking Michael and not someone else.. obviously he wanted to put the band into the hands of someone He trusted. it IS the Newsboys after all..
I do believe Peter is following God to his best ability and trust that he is completely at peace with this decision. I also wish them the best and think it's very likely that Tait will be amazing (love that dude's voice). This does not change the fact that this announcement (both in content and delivery) was apt to create controversy. The fact that this video (by some unknown radio dude) has over 1,000 views and 40+ comments is proof. Give us time, we will get used to it.
i would like to let you know that i work with a group that is good friends with the whole band and we happen to have the first interview with them and we have spoken to Peter about it and it was his idea to an extent. he is taking time off to spend with his family, he has prayed very hard about it and is looking forward to this, they also just played at the Dallas battle cry and it wasnt bad
Are any of you people Christians that pray for Gods' will to be done?
I am sure Peter and Michael and the Newsboys have prayed and felt led to do this. This is a God decision. I am disapointed too but give the guy a chance. And really who could replace Peter? Uh, no one can. At least Tait is an experienced performer.
Also I read on Newsboys sight that Peter will be performing with them now an then.
Again, my comment is not that they are sooooo different it's that they are both existing strong brands, and they will need to give existing Newsboys fans time to get used to the idea of what Tait as frontman for the Newsboys will mean. Especially considering the way in which it has come about (out of seemingly nowhere, mid tour). I also want it clear that I have never brought up race once in this conversation nor do I consider it even slightly a factor in this, they choose K Max, same reaction
Peter Furler was not the original Newsboys lead singer. John James was. So according to this guy the name should have changed when Peter took over. Whatever. I am sad that Peter is not going to be the lead, I am happy for him. Michael is a great singer. Although he has big shoes to fill I believe he will be successful.
Actually "this guy" has said that replacing a lead singer and maintaining brand purity is completely possible if the new lead singer is either from within the band (ie Furler for James) or a relative unknown (Further Seems Forever, etc.). My point is solely that an existing strong brand name like Tait entering a separate existing strong brand like Newsboys creates brand confusion. They may sound great (I'm guessing they will) but the backlash from fans should be expected.
Amen... I want refunds for my front rown tickets... 4/12 Miami, 4/24 Fort Myers $ 4/26 Vero Beach. Bait and switch, false advertising, straight-up rip off... PISSED OFF!
The Newsboys are going to be a stronger band now. Peter is tired and Tait definitely has a major world class voice. Lets hope peter's time off from the road makes for even stronger songs in the future. Carry on Newsboys!
A valid question for sure. I'm just a dude with a camera, a blog, a radio show, and some opinions. None of these things makes me right or my opinions any more valuable than anyone elses. I also work weekends for Ringling Bros. Circus (or least I should right?)
Newsboys will always be Newsboys. Peter is still writing. The line-up includes three other long-timers. Michael Tait will add a new dimension. Sure he's not Peter but nor should he be expected to be. Surely Peter deserves a break after 22 years of faithful service - a lot of sacrifice. He's given a lot to America perhaps we should give him a break and let him follow his call. After all it is about the Ministry - not just the music.
Agree with every last thing you say here. The problem is that a corporate brand (like The Newsboys) is not only defined by them, but also by the fans. The fan reaction is perfectly valid considering this. I repeat, my beef is not with Tait, Furler, or any of the other boys, my concern is only with the purity of the brand. And in my opinion this group of talented artists would have much more success as a new entity than in trying to continue as "The Newsboys".
I must ask though. What has really changed? Their mission statement remains the same, their devotion, their message, their attitude, their personality, their boldness have all remained intact. you talk about brand purity as if it lies externally. At the core, they are the same group they have always been except now they have another physical body singing. We don't abandon a church when the pastor changes, because a church is a body of people. the Newsboys are no different.
I also have to ask if you have seen the videos on youtube from Aquire the Fire where Tait made his debut. the sound is very similar, and his performance is hardly a night and day change from Pete's. In all reality, they are still the Newsboys that we all know and love. Nothing has changed.
I don't think its right to say the newsboys should change their name because of a position change, even the lead singer. Some of you may be forgetting that Peter Furler was not always the front man of the Newsboys, it used to be John James. Should Petra have changed their name when John Schlitt took over for Gregg X. Voltz? I was just as shocked as anyone when I first read the news, but when I thought about it, he has the perfect voice for the Newsboys.
I just realized something. Who do we respond to? God. Therefore, if God put this on Peter's heart, then he's just doing what God's asks him to do just as we are to do.
wow. Someone else who looks at the Newsboys as more than entertainers. I was saved when I was 14, and it was in no small part to the ministry that the newsboys have carried. I mentioned earlier how people are still being saved, and that is by far the most important thing.
I have followed their carreer closely, and I have never seen them waver in their faith. If they feel that this is the direction God is moving them in, then I say we all support them whole heartedly.
I just want to thank you(pastordice) and galentrafford for the more positive comments to help me think better about this and actually give them a chance. galentrafford is right, Peter Furler is not the band, I hadn't thought about that. But just like you said, it will take time to get used to since Peter has been the lead for over a decade. Change the name maybe, maybe not, right now the Newsboys isn't the same with Tait as the lead singer but I doubt that Peter would choose him to end the band.
Totally agree with you. They are no longer the newsboys. They really should just call it quits rather than replace furler. Tait has a great voice, but its not even close to the sound the newsboys have. Its too bad this is happening.
And why should they call it quits. They are still Enjoy it, their fans still enjoy them, they still sell out arenas, and most importantly, people are still being saved. Their Work is not done, so why should they quit now?
Tait with the newsboys is gonna be AWESOME. but calling newsboys dcTalk cause of a member change? now that is just stupid. all he is is just a new instrumentalist. no one called them the Paul Coleman band when he played guitar for them.
(also Tait doesn't hog all the awesomeness from dcTalk) they are going to be singing the same old songs we all love only with a new vocalist bringing in his own vocal flavor.
Thank you! Finally someone else who recognizes that this is awesome. The Newsboys are constantly reinventing themselves in order to stay fresh and relevant, and if they think that they can continue serving the kingdom best by Pete taking a more background role, and bringing Tait in to sing, then Great. God bless them.
I have been a huge Newsboys fan for many many years, I love Peter, But he's not the band. I think Tait will work out better than anyone can imagine.
While I agree with the sentiment that Tait could do an amazing job, I still think it's wiser if they do a name change. Frontman is completely different than instrumentalist, and in my opinion for a new frontman (person if you chose) to work it has to be one of two kinds of people, an existing band member or a complete unknown. The only other exception is if the band is relatively unknown. But to replace a well known frontman with another well known artist creates Brand confusion.
OK Guys, let's turn the clock back 12 years to when John James stepped down as frontman. Nobody thought that Peter Furler could fill his shoes, and he did incredibly well. People thought that the Newsboys were over, and 12 years later, they are still going strong.
Here's the thing. Tait is an amazing singer, he is a strong performer with great stage presence, He will do awesome. He may not speek with an accent, he may be black, but he is a Newsboy, and I welcome him with open arms.
Tait is a great singer, but it's just not the same. It's...... NEWSBOYS. It's an Aussie band. It's a Peter Furler band. This isn't it. I agree, it shouldn't still be called the newsboys. *SIGH*
Umm. Okay. Christians are a different breed. We don't care who gets the glory. First, listen to an interview. And then make a statement. Does it even matter what it's called. You are pretty much wrong. Tait is an amazing singer and performer with energy. God gets the glory dude.

They should change their name.

true that, the Newsboys will still be a great band, but they will never be the same :(

Thank you for actually listening to what I said :)

to music formerly recorded & performed by Peter.

SabbathForSodom 2 years ago
You are so right. It would have made better sense to ask Phil Joel back, even if it was temporary until they could find a permanent replacment. It's not because i don't like Michael Tait because he's really a talented guy. I can see new material working but the classic newsboys songs don't fit His well defined sound and vice versa. It's like a Vegas wedding that should be anulled. Mike is awesome in "Tait" and it fits like a glove. Newsboys have a distict sound. Bring back John James!
eden512 2 years ago 5
Dude, no need to wrap your mind around it as it's really not your choice. I strongly believe and also have read, this was done with much prayer and consideration.
I didn't like it when John James left the Newsboys but it brought the band into a new era and God used that.
If you are this stressed out over a band member change, maybe you should re think your life. There are higher and more important things to think on, Don't let this keep you up at night. That's just sad.
KnightElf55 3 years ago
Thank you for your consideration for my stress and sleeping habits, but I can assure you I'm doing fine. I'm not losing sleep or stressed about it at all, just processing it as are many Newsboys fans. I understand it has nothing to do with me personally, but there are plenty of things I try to wrap my mind around that aren't directly my choice. Like why the McRib isn't an everyday menu item at McDs? Seriously, that's a great sandwich.
pastordice 3 years ago

I love the Boys, but right now I'm not sure I even want to go to the concert.
keepitshinin 3 years ago 2
Glad Peter and the gang didn't confide in you. You seem to be at odds with the direction GOD has taken these gents. I'm not so sure it's important whether or not you fully comprehend what's going on. Don't take it personally, but there are hands at work beyond your scope. I'm sure it's refreshing to have an opinion and to have the freedom to express it. That's a lovely realization. However, there are times when that still small voice requests a bit of quiet. This might be one of those times.
ITeachThereforeIDrum 3 years ago
Not at odds, and I would agree that in the eternal scope of things it means nothing whether I "comprehend" it. Though I do sense a bit of condescension in your comment, I thank you for adding to the discussion. I would argue that opening up this conversation is exactly what Newsboys fans (including myself) need to work through the change.
pastordice 3 years ago
Shouldn't you trust that GOD knows what he's doing? Did you happen to think that maybe Peter is losing his voice, focusing on his family, or something else that's going on in his personal life? I understand you seem to be confused. but if you believe that Peter is a man of God and a praying man.. don't you think he went to God first? As for picking Michael and not someone else.. obviously he wanted to put the band into the hands of someone He trusted. it IS the Newsboys after all..
jcchasezdream 3 years ago
I do believe Peter is following God to his best ability and trust that he is completely at peace with this decision. I also wish them the best and think it's very likely that Tait will be amazing (love that dude's voice). This does not change the fact that this announcement (both in content and delivery) was apt to create controversy. The fact that this video (by some unknown radio dude) has over 1,000 views and 40+ comments is proof. Give us time, we will get used to it.

TLSkipper 3 years ago
Actually "this guy" has said that replacing a lead singer and maintaining brand purity is completely possible if the new lead singer is either from within the band (ie Furler for James) or a relative unknown (Further Seems Forever, etc.). My point is solely that an existing strong brand name like Tait entering a separate existing strong brand like Newsboys creates brand confusion. They may sound great (I'm guessing they will) but the backlash from fans should be expected.

After all it is about the Ministry - not just the music.
mwfurler 3 years ago 4
Agree with every last thing you say here. The problem is that a corporate brand (like The Newsboys) is not only defined by them, but also by the fans. The fan reaction is perfectly valid considering this. I repeat, my beef is not with Tait, Furler, or any of the other boys, my concern is only with the purity of the brand. And in my opinion this group of talented artists would have much more success as a new entity than in trying to continue as "The Newsboys".
pastordice 3 years ago
I must ask though. What has really changed? Their mission statement remains the same, their devotion, their message, their attitude, their personality, their boldness have all remained intact. you talk about brand purity as if it lies externally. At the core, they are the same group they have always been except now they have another physical body singing. We don't abandon a church when the pastor changes, because a church is a body of people. the Newsboys are no different.
galentrafford 3 years ago 2

MadWookiee11 3 years ago
I just realized something. Who do we respond to? God. Therefore, if God put this on Peter's heart, then he's just doing what God's asks him to do just as we are to do.
mochico88 3 years ago
If they feel that this is the direction God is moving them in, then I say we all support them whole heartedly.
galentrafford 3 years ago
I just want to thank you(pastordice) and galentrafford for the more positive comments to help me think better about this and actually give them a chance. galentrafford is right, Peter Furler is not the band, I hadn't thought about that. But just like you said, it will take time to get used to since Peter has been the lead for over a decade. Change the name maybe, maybe not, right now the Newsboys isn't the same with Tait as the lead singer but I doubt that Peter would choose him to end the band.
mochico88 3 years ago
Totally agree with you. They are no longer the newsboys. They really should just call it quits rather than replace furler. Tait has a great voice, but its not even close to the sound the newsboys have. Its too bad this is happening.
17Kelty 3 years ago
And why should they call it quits. They are still Enjoy it, their fans still enjoy them, they still sell out arenas, and most importantly, people are still being saved. Their Work is not done, so why should they quit now?
galentrafford 3 years ago
Tait with the newsboys is gonna be AWESOME. but calling newsboys dcTalk cause of a member change? now that is just stupid. all he is is just a new instrumentalist. no one called them the Paul Coleman band when he played guitar for them.
(also Tait doesn't hog all the awesomeness from dcTalk) they are going to be singing the same old songs we all love only with a new vocalist bringing in his own vocal flavor.
gog143 3 years ago
I think Tait will work out better than anyone can imagine.
galentrafford 3 years ago
