I wish Frank had been able to make the connection in the beginning clip about the "everywoman" Tipper Gore. She is wife to Al Gore, then a Tennessee Senator, who spearheaded the PMRC. When Kandy said that a publicity stunt wouldn't warrant hearings on Capitol Hill, Frank could have drawn a straight line through Tipper and Al that would have shed a bit of doubt on the organization early enough to have made it known that it was using Congressional contacts to further its agenda...Frank was right.

Marilyn Manson should be on this panel, lol. They had no clue what was to come. Still, we are alive and most of us turned out okay. The labeling just shot record sales through the roof. It was the best thing to happen to rock music.
Candy Stroud is a lost cause, there is no hope for her or the type of people that relate to her. She probably listens to Bobby Goldsboro or John Denver. People like her will never understand or appreciate great rock music.
excellent! which reminds me... didn't Bobby Goldsboro have a single in the 70s about a teenager being seduced by a much older woman? Loved her Carmina Burana comment, too: "it's one of my favorites" - guess she didn't pick up on the sex and drinking in that one, either? hypocrits...
@pcarpanini John Denver testified to Congress along with Frank Zappa and Dee Snyder, against the labeling and censorship. It was actually the best part of the testimony, in my opinion, because it was so unexpected. You don't have to like his music, but if you respect Zappa's position, you should know Denver's was the same, and cut him a little slack.
Why don't they put all their effort into fighting rape and murder in reality not in fantasy. All they money, all the petitions they sign, all the energy they use should be toward fighting the underlying problems behind violence in real society.
@Walls1441 Brilliant xD. You can see his eyes shine when she reads those lyrics. In fact, that's her only point that is correct. The lyrics. The rest is (that word with a bull in). Bullony ;)? My parents lived in that age, and I have to feel sorry that they had to look upon faces like that Kandy Stroud. And just for bonus: I dig Mr. Zappa's voice. If he talks, the rest is silent. If Stroud talks, I can feel that buzz in my head that says: throw something at her!
Here is what I take from Frank Zappa's testimony: the power of shame, whether it takes the guise of 'morality' against sex or anything else, is a tool designed to control your mind and your behavior. Never let anyone shame you. Use your mind. Use your reason and your discernment. And understand that anyone who tries to shame you is trying to control and subjugate you. No one has the right to do that. Know your enemy. Stare them in the eye and tell them to go fuck themselves.
Zappa's flaw here is that he says that ONE reason why this type of music is detrimental to children is that America's teenagers are marginally illiterate and do not get a thrill out of reading. This suggests, by his argument, that what is read is not negatively influential in the same way as music is. This is completely false as music lyrics are but a fraction of what content a book can have. Magazines, books, certain novels are far, FAR more lewd than music has been yet he doesn't admit that.
@TyphoidBryan I don't see that as a flaw. He may not have articulated his point as well as he would have liked, but I think what he was saying is that instead of having multiple media interests, there is essentially ONE in play, acting as a channel directly into the kid's brain. It's not balanced or filtered with other interests, and his issue is that the situation is exploited by the recording industry.
I saw my first porno (by accident) when I was 4 years old. Did this make me a sexual deviant? no. I made my sexual choices when I was old enough to indulge. of course today porno is just a google search away....thank god!
@TheJabberwock77 That's probably the most shocking statement I've heard in all this. I didn't expect someone to actually so admit such a thing. That creature's absolutely clueless.
funny thing is i was 16 in 1985 and when they did put labels on records and CDs... that was the only ones i bought thinking they were hardcore. compared to the lyrics out today in hiphop music, those were mild to say the least. my question is why isnt it such a big deal now compared to back in the 80's.
A couple of months ago i went out to buy an anthrax cd and when i look down at it i notice a sticker saying im not old enough to buy it because of this bitch
26 or more years later and the lyrics are far more graphic because of the "warnings". This woman is such a fool. What has she to say in this 2011? She is hiding because all she stood for came to nothing. She wants to keep people in the dark about the things that might help them navigate their own life. Many parents do not and did not spend enough time with their own children. That is the bottom line. If you work, you had better find your children more important then your career.
It's wrong to keep your kids away from these things especially at a young age, because that's when they're learning all of the basic thins about life. Yet, it's just as important that the kids know what's accepted in the general norm of society; they can't just go around in their kindergarten class shouting profanities.
Either way, Frank Zappa totally destroyed these people. R.I.P. Zappa
Zappa has (and continues to) enriched millions of lives with his music. What has Candy Stroud done for anybody? Zappa wrote "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" and that is worth a thousand bitter, pucker-faced prunes.
Kandy...oh yes ,this little lady is getting a bit worked up and I believe like a lot of people on this page that she can lick your rod till you can taste Kandy dripping into your waiting mouth...........sorry getting a bit carried away.
If what you feel scares you then you are at war with biological reality which results in neurosis (religious or otherwise). But people without a life will always resent those who are ("perversely") alive and seek to thwart their vitality.
after all, does someone knows what's Zappa's political point of view? is he a conservative? a liberal? i'm not that into politics so i'm confused. I've heard him saying once that he was a conservative, but most of times he comes out as a very anti right wing fella, go figure
@cherryorchards He is conservative. It's just that the Republican party of today is far too liberal. A true Republican would never want government control of marriage, drugs, religion (including religions like Satanism or Islam). A true Republican wants the rights not expressly given to the government to be theirs to exercise however they deem appropriate.
@cthulhu63 The terms "liberal," "conservative," and "(R)republican" are misused or misappropriated these days. The "Republican" party has almost no connection to republican ideals of self governance (unitary executive and the desire to increase the(ir) president's power). A Supreme court which gives more power to corporations than people is NOT liberal - it puts the individual's rights at risk. This makes the party too conservative, not too liberal. Jefferson was a liberal and a republican.
@cherryorchards He was liberal socially and with censor issues such as this and drugs but conservative in government things such as taxes and the inner workings
How is it voluntary when the music industry just like the movie industry was told to self regulate OR face legislative regulation? Sounds like an ultimatum to me.
It Is NOT the job of musicians to write music to "Protect children'--Thats THE PARENTS JOB. These Christians are really relentless and tiresome. They want everyone to live and think as they do,and they expect grown men and women to sing about things that wont be offensive to their little children? Hey parents,Its your job to be aware of what your kids are listening to! DONT make the whole world have to censor themselves just because you're too lazy to do your job as a parent!
Frank didn't talk enough in this interview about the role of parents. He should have pounded her feeble arguments in the ground with his intellect. It doesn't seem like he was prepared.
@hisvorpalsword This was originally an hour long program, but Nightmatch chopped it to a half hour. Lots of Frank's points were removed, including parental responsibility.
"...as an artist, he has a serious responsibility as does Prince, as has Madonna, as has Motley Crue, as has WASP, to protect the children of this country." _Kandy Stroud ('Kandie' on her website), beltway PR company owner, Hillary campaigner, CNN Chief Diplomatic Correspondent, New York Times writer, Huffington Post blogger. She goes with the flow. Like a twig on the shoulders of a mighty stream.
She's a lobbyist and a religious nut who is an agent of an oppressive form of governance. A hypocrite as well. I agree with what you wrote in the description box...that she repeats the lyrics that she's trying to lobby against.
"I feel that [artists] have the responsibility to protect the children of this country"
So the US doesn't have a department of defense anymore? Maybe when you put the ink to the record contract you are given the responsibility to protect the country. I thought it was to put out records on a label, but I guess I've been lied to.
franks a great man,but i think she might be right about a lot of this..but then again i would ban peter and katie, ashley and cheryl and most advertising from broadcast..
To an extent, I do have to agree. As much as I know how intellegent Frank was, you can also see how he dodges issuses by redirecting the focus into this trumped up mass " Christian based fundamentalist agenda" that he puts to every argument, every time he gets cornered. He's not wrong but he over used it.
However, his genius (other than musical) was in how he saw the hypocrisy and ridiculousness in how we as a society behave and function. I wish he was still with us..
I can't tell whether the audience is belatedly applauding Zappa's statement or the Born Again Christian Lady saying "I would rather have them be ignorant." I hope it was the former.
True, but I was referring specifically to 7:27 when the woman in the audience says "I would rather have them be ignorant" and the audience applauds. It sounds like the applause starts a second or so before the woman finishes her sentence, so they were probably applauding Zappa's previous statement, but it's hard to tell.
The problem is that she can't raise her kids. If music has more influence on your kids then you do then you have failed as a parent. What you should NOT teach your kids is religious practices, instead teach them about the different religions and when they are old enough they can choose for themselves. Most people have kids because they fear their own deaths and want copies of themselves running around when they are gone.
You ´re right, those people wanted to censore albums because they don´t want to take the time to explain their kids whats right and what´s wrong. Yeah, please eliminate all the bad things so i dont have to boder an talk to my son about it! Please!!! if you deliver the information your kids need, there will be no need for you to censore. Educate don´t censore!!!!!
@MistahhB yeah and it's really pathetic cuz they can't afford to have kids if they can't raise them as free and separate individuals, and i was really angry with the stupid born again christian who said she prefers to keep her kids ignorant but i'm not surprised as this is coming out of a brainwashed christian.
You know what I saw in a pornographic movie? I saw a woman get dp'd. I saw much more than that when I was a kid and I never went out and did it.
I read books and listened to all kinds of music including FZ. I was smart enough not to take the fucking lyricsseriously. I'm an adult and the only thing that has thoroughly affected me was a tragic death in my family.
I'm a Frank Zappa fan but I think he didn't do well here. The whole issue here is one of parenting. What age do they mean when they say "children" and "kids"?
It doesn't matter what is on a record but it does matter that a "kid" (say 9 or 10) is wandering around , shopping by themselves.
I was 9 years old when this show aired. There was a record store a block away from me that sold not only records but bongs and pornography. I used to cross a busy street and go in there all the time because my parents weren't over protective douchebags like every other person who creates human life and resembles Candy Stroud is these days. And guess what? I never raped anyone, and never had a drug problem. Oh boy! Looks like letting children explore reality doesn't hurt after all.
Good to hear. I think that more you make something mysterious and bad (sex, drugs etc.) the more kids want it. I think we all remember when we were teenagers and wanted to rebel against our parents, and what better way than to do things they didn't allow.
1. 0:30-38- No, you stupid bitch. Artists can create whatever the fuck they want, they have no "responsibility" to anything but their own creative vision. All of the best art has been the result of an individual's personal creative vision- the stuff that isn't is commercialized shit with no soul and no imagination.
2. "I'd rather have them be ignorant"?! She actually SAID that?! Do I even need to comment how tragic that is? Jesus Christ!
Ms. Kandy keeps bringing up the word "occult" when referring to her slew of unquestionable lyrics. As far as I know, the word "occult" doesn't have a negative connotation and merely refers to magic, the supernatural, mystery and unorthodox.
Her negative reference to the occult makes me wonder what else her and others are trying to "protect" us from.
They've both got some pretty good points. Zappa's a god of putting things bluntly, whereas Candy is a god of repeating lyrics and saying "THIS IS NOT OKAY".
YOU BE THE JUDGE.
It's really fun to watch this knowing how it's all come out in the end. :B
Zappa nails it...amazing that this interview took place in 1985 and now we are facing a socialist mindset in this country. Suzy Creamcheese, I mean Candy Stroud is more evil then all the "purity" statements that she spewed forth from her mouth.
No, social demagogy on BOTH sides have and will lead to censorship. Who led this campaign? Why, it was two "liberal" democratic stooges wives, Stroud and Tipper Gore who then got bored "conservative" housewives on board like Susan Baker.
Was this a true issue, or was it fomented and hyped? The result has been lower and lower common denominator in song lyrics and music, with the result contributing to our overall moral decline and disintegration. FZ was militarized from childhood (read Dave McGowan's excellent LAUREL CANYON MUSIC SCENE to truly understand), and we know the Strouds et al were controlled and put up to it, so my question - was this whole "issue" hyped for purpose of normalizing or legitimizing subsequent deline?

When Kandy said that a publicity stunt wouldn't warrant hearings on Capitol Hill, Frank could have drawn a straight line through Tipper and Al that would have shed a bit of doubt on the organization early enough to have made it known that it was using Congressional contacts to further its agenda...Frank was right.

after all, does someone knows what's Zappa's political point of view? is he a conservative? a liberal? i'm not that into politics so i'm confused. I've heard him saying once that he was a conservative, but most of times he comes out as a very anti right wing fella, go figure
cherryorchards 1 year ago
@cherryorchards He is conservative. It's just that the Republican party of today is far too liberal. A true Republican would never want government control of marriage, drugs, religion (including religions like Satanism or Islam). A true Republican wants the rights not expressly given to the government to be theirs to exercise however they deem appropriate.
cthulhu63 1 year ago

"I feel that [artists] have the responsibility to protect the children of this country"
So the US doesn't have a department of defense anymore? Maybe when you put the ink to the record contract you are given the responsibility to protect the country. I thought it was to put out records on a label, but I guess I've been lied to.

dwfan12 2 years ago
To an extent, I do have to agree. As much as I know how intellegent Frank was, you can also see how he dodges issuses by redirecting the focus into this trumped up mass " Christian based fundamentalist agenda" that he puts to every argument, every time he gets cornered. He's not wrong but he over used it.
However, his genius (other than musical) was in how he saw the hypocrisy and ridiculousness in how we as a society behave and function. I wish he was still with us..

panhead1219 2 years ago 2

MistahhB 2 years ago 31
You ´re right, those people wanted to censore albums because they don´t want to take the time to explain their kids whats right and what´s wrong. Yeah, please eliminate all the bad things so i dont have to boder an talk to my son about it! Please!!! if you deliver the information your kids need, there will be no need for you to censore. Educate don´t censore!!!!!
joaquinponte 2 years ago
@MistahhB yeah and it's really pathetic cuz they can't afford to have kids if they can't raise them as free and separate individuals, and i was really angry with the stupid born again christian who said she prefers to keep her kids ignorant but i'm not surprised as this is coming out of a brainwashed christian.

Oh boy! Looks like letting children explore reality doesn't hurt after all.
myroncope 2 years ago 4
Good to hear. I think that more you make something mysterious and bad (sex, drugs etc.) the more kids want it. I think we all remember when we were teenagers and wanted to rebel against our parents, and what better way than to do things they didn't allow.

1. 0:30-38- No, you stupid bitch. Artists can create whatever the fuck they want, they have no "responsibility" to anything but their own creative vision. All of the best art has been the result of an individual's personal creative vision- the stuff that isn't is commercialized shit with no soul and no imagination.

No, social demagogy on BOTH sides have and will lead to censorship. Who led this campaign? Why, it was two "liberal" democratic stooges wives, Stroud and Tipper Gore who then got bored "conservative" housewives on board like Susan Baker.
