Actually was fairly disappointed when I learnt that Revan and Malak were just puppets in a bigger scheme. It's just so annoyingly obvious that it wasn't the initial concept. No part of the KOTOR storyline showed and sign that either Revan or Malak were trying to complete anything other than dominate the galaxy. If there was a powerful overlord then why would Malak turn on Revan instead of him? He wanted to rule by himself after all.

In terms of novels that would be the lost tribe of the sith series since thats the first novel chronologically its a Ebook series though. First regular book would be revan though you might want to start with the tales of the jedi comic series its the oldest chronologically so far. its hard to find though
