Hey.. just wanted to say.. when u apply perm color . it is a CHEMICAL.. and will TEXTURIZE your hair. this will always loosen your curl pattern. and be sure to use plenty of moisturizer and conditioners on your hair.. basically the same way as if you had actually relaxed the hair. and the lighter the color the more conditioning and moisturizer will be needed. can u share which other great videos like yours you know of please? i am so not as creative as you lol i cant think of what to do with my hair i luv how you style yours! i want to see a little more videos hopefully i can get my own style from watching you guys awsome creativity! thnkx for all ur vids!
I want to first mention how I love tuning in and watching your videos! I was just watching this video and I heard you mention hair growth. I don't know if anyone has ever told u but, there is a girl on youtube and her name is Kimmaytube! She is very big on hair retention or growth. Her hair has grown several inches since january. I've been following her hair regiman for about a 4 weeks and my hair grew to about 1 inch!
I tried the braids and loved it!! I took a picture of it and put it in my video on my channel if you would like to see the results. Thanks for the inspiration!!!
Hey PD! I love your videos- I've only been natural for about 3 weeks and while there are a ton of videos for longer hair, I'm finding a problem locating really good videos (How to) for shorter hair. Do you have any videos from back in the day when you just started?
I did this style today and it came out GREAT!!! I was skeptical about how I would look but I love it. Thanks so much, you are an inspiration to girls every where that have natural hair. Keep doing you sweety. I have decided to keep my hair braided or twisted for a yr to see the growth. Good luck on your journey.
I wore this style for three weeks! Everyday I would moisturize the ends with conditioner and seal with gel, then I would apply a home made scalp oil (almond oil, olive oil, vitamin E, tea tree oil, jojoba oil, rosemary, lemon grass, and lavender EO's) to my scalp. After the three weeks, I took it down and it was so thick, shiny, lengthy and beautiful! I absolutely loved it!!!!! I just hated the 4 hours that it took to take out all of those braids!!!!!
To unravel braids: I wet my hair thoroughly in the shower(warm water) and the braids swell up and already begin to unravel. I then, plaster my hair with conditioner and take out the braids with my fingers. It's a much faster job because the braids are loose and moist.
your hair color might be contributing to it looking like it's not growing. I dyed my hair and swore it wasn't growing. The problem was that I wasn't retaining any length on the color treated part. Now that the color is gone, my hair growth can be seen tremendously!
FYI: To undo my braids like yours, I never undo them dry. I wet them in the shower so that they are well drenched and swell up and begin to unravel themselves and then I soak them with conditioner which makes it very easy to undo the braids and a much faster job.
I'm gonna get this style done in the morning. I plan to keep the braids in for about a month~cleansing weekly. What, if any, concerns should I have about shedding? And, what products do you recommend to use during the month to maintain moisture?
Sounds like a great plan.... I do my hair once a month and it really grows like a weed. Thanks so much for sharing. I'm sure you'll "Achieve Great Lengths" in no time at all. Take care and keep us posted. God bless.
please do one before the take down, just want to see how well it holds up over a month. i've done braids before and swore them off for the same reason but it was so long ago, i don't even remember how long they lasted.
Will you be doing videos focussing on make-up and fashion because you do those very well as well. Beautiful hairstyle! I'm trying it out tonight. Please don't disappear on us!
hey thanks for replying so soon, I have another question, do you hair shrink back up with the weekly washes, if so how are you hadling this and can you keep them in longer than a month time or do you think it's best to take down sooner and re braid or twist.
HOTMAM0309- no it doesn't shrink up. the braid keeps it stretched out. i don't want to keep them in any longer b/c i don't want it to lock. so just know your hair and know how long you can keep something in before getting too tangled
This is such a cute style. I am definitely going to try this one. I too have been doing too much with my hair and I think my growth has slowed down. Thanks again for helping me with my journey.
In all my years of doing box braids I NEVER thought ouf leaving the ends out so they can curl up on their own O_O ... DUH! I do believe I've found my next style after these braids/twists come down. YIPPEEDOO!! :D
OMG i went to the fotki site you posted and this woman is amazing i am getting on board today......her growth is amazing no more heat styles, or stretching my hair for a whole year.......just twists and braids.......Lord give me patience....
prettydimples lol we think alike! Im with u! i decided im really loving braids and the versatility so i'll be braiding up for 3 weeks and then taking it down and then straightening for 1 week to cut down on tangles and knots at the ends.
you are so helpful! I have gotten so many styles from you. I just did this to my hair and I LOVE it. I'm lazy so I didn't braid as much as you did. My hair doesn't curl as much with the gel, so I did medium twists with Jane Carter setting foam and it looks fabulous! It's like curly micros. I'm gonna try to ride this for 2 months (with touch ups of course) Thanks for the idea!!!
i just finished doing the same thing to my hair took me about 3 days todo it i had it parted in 8 sections im so glad im finished as along as it took to put them in i am not taking these things out for a while
Youre such an inspiration! My hair seems like it's been the same length for years too, so this year im focusing on my hair growth and retaining length. Best wishes on your hair journey and God bless you!!!
I love doing this style. I usually wear it in the summer as a wash and go. For more body, I braid no more than two inches, I know a female on here that only braids one inch for stretching purposes. I think this is one of the best low maintenance styles out there.
Ive noticed that a few of the women on youtube (a few, not all) that style their hair often aren't retaining length or their hair is becoming thinner. I usually check out their videos from a year ago and compare them to their most recent video. It does concern me a little. You're right, the health of your hair should have priority over sporting a different style every week or so.
BTW, your hair is growing so don't be so hard on yourself. We appreciate your videos because of all the styles you've brought to the natural community esp. the protective styles! ; ) Thanks.
You can always convert them to bigger braids/twists so the takeout isn't so daunting. That's what I do and I don't even braid as small as you. Love your color as always.
wow..i was thinking the same thing prettydimples...my hair seems to be stumped for the past year....little growth..so i did some twist that i had planned on keeping for a month, but i think braids are eaiser to keep for a month because the roots dont get as loose...i may have to co-sign with you on these...
that is so true girl. I have been doing that myself and walah my hair is buttered out. I wash, oil and neglect mines and when I go to the shop they ask what do I do to get my scalp and hair healthy, I simply tell them I do nothing at all. I do the same with my daughters and their hair is growing like crazy. So good luck to you, I know it will ne down your back by the end of this year. We do need to let our hair rest to grow and be more healthy
Girl, you had me worried for a minute there, you sound like you were signing off for good, like Peace, yall straight! It seems like everyone is doing protective hairstyles, maybe because of the winter? I don't know about the weather where you are but where I am, it was 12 degrees outside! Too cold & windy to be trying to keep a loose hairstyle or any other non protective style!
P.S.
You braids came out lovely & EbonyPrincessH's lovely braids were the first ones I ever saw on natural hair!
My hair grows soooo fast when I keep it simple. The less product I use, the faster it grows. God Bless and I can't wait to see how long your hair gets!
Good for You PD. I've been wearing my hair in tiny twists and Murray's Beeswax Cream is Great for them. I put a little Carefree curl first then the Murray's Beeswax and then braid it in sections. The Crinkle is Sick. Try it You'll love it for Your Tiny Braids.
Hi Prettydimples01, your braids are too cute. I wish I could leave mine in that long - they start to frizz after 5 days. I cannot get my ends to curl just by wetting and gel. I have to twirl the ends of the braids individually. Please share some of the styles you do with your braids. Blessings to you in the NEW YEAR!
i've decided exactly the same thing but i do twist because its faster and my hair love it .i just spray water and oils once a day hope my twist will last 2 weeks. love your braids !
i want to do that but I always do twist which don't last as long because I'm scared it wont come out very easily if I do tghem small but my hair is thin so i don't want to do them big... any advice?
I may have to make a similar journey to parallel yours. I came into this because I wanted a BA, "power to the people" afro (my hair was fine before the chop), and three years into it, I don't feel any closer to my goal than I was when I started. I don't have to take rests from doing a lot of styling, because I'm the queen of low manipulation. I simply do not give my hair enough attention.
Good luck! I look forward to whatever videos you have to show us in the meantime.
Your hair is beautiful, If you have time, can you show pics of how you styled your twists and braids to keep us motivated to maintain our protective styles too? As for length retention, you hair looks super healthy and from your dyed hair I can tell it is growing quite a bit, maybe you could stretch the time between your trims a little bit longer.
I feel the same way about my hair; that it has not grown in the last two years(been natural going on 4 and hair just looks short) but I think that I may follow your lead as well. Love your vids and will miss them but totally understand your focusand your goal. Love your hair alwys! BTW you have any advice on how I can get my hair to move/bounce more. My hair is very "stiff" soft and moisturized but stiff; if that makes sense
thats okay prettydimples01, we're thankful for all of these vids. i hope the year goes by fast & your hair grows super fast so we can see your styling vids again soon ^_^ (im waitin to get braids too except you dont wanna know how long i keep mine in lol)
Hey dimples, your hair styles are always so cute! I agree- I want my hair to grow too so I will follow your lead. Happy New Year and blessings to you and your family.
thats so pretty i've been watching ur videos for maybe a yr now and i do see growth good job and duces to ya u really helped me stay natural its hard and patience is really needed i was tempted so many times to put a perm in my hair but because of u and so many others im encouraged thanx Happy New Year blessings love and lovely hair )
The shea butter mix is awesome. My mom noticed a difference and ask what I'd used after the 1st time I tried it. And your hair has grown quite a bit since your initial video. Take a tjourney throw all of them and you'll see.
Thank you so much for your videos. I was lost until I started watching your videos. You have really taught me a lot about styling natural hair. I appreciate it and I hope you continue to post your work. Your hair is always wonderful.
Hey! I'm doing the same thing, you know, keeping my hair in braids for awhile so my hair can rest. I just got my hair braided yesterday. I hope to keep them in for at least a month.
That's what i was thinking too. Im gonna do a protectictive style, braids or twists or flat twists, leave it in 4 awhile then wear it loose, then start over so I can see some length. gr8 minds think alike! happy new Year!! Always luv seeing ur vids!!
Hey girl, i just finished my braiding my hair and you're right it is a lot faster when you separate the hair into sections. I'll post some pics once it dries!!!!!!!!! Happy New Years!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, great vid. Quick question. As a stylist, how long would you recommend keeping the individuals in...I heard you mention you'd leave it in for about a month..would you recommend longer? Is 6 weeks too long??
luvlyone20- it depends on your hair. i know me after about 4 weeks my hair may start to lock and i don't want that. but if you have a looser curl pattern or you know that your hair takes longer to lock then you can leave them in longer.
I watched you braid your hair before on your other video, watched KinkyKurlyQueen (??) braid hers, and now I watched you do it again in this video. . . and finally, finally, I'm 100% convinced that I can try this! LOL I've been hesitant b/c of the time it takes to braid and take down. . . but I've been inspired! Thanks, prettydimples01 and Happy new year!!!
twistsandcurls- she braids her own hair. you should try it. just take your time when you take them down and when you feel yourself getting tired or irritaed just take a break. thats what i plan to do this time. im going to break it up in two days
Good advice, lady! You're right, patience is key. It's true, for some reason it's like I'm trying to race against time! LOL I'm goin to try it maybe at the middle or end of the month. . .trying to see how long my "small" twists last. . . I'll keep you posted!
tht makes so much since....but i believe your hair has grown but it would probably grow more once you keep them in protective styles im a living witness
It's cute. I see you left more hair out at the ends this time. It definitely makes the hair look fuller. Thanks for all the great advice! Your videos helped to give me the confidence to style my natural hair and wear it out in public. I can't thank you enough for that!!!!! Happy New Year!!
I don't blame u girl! u have graced us with so many vids I am not even to your lenghth by far..Hey it's your journey and your channel and I know I will continue to watch ... GROW that hair sista we will still b here!!!LOL Happy NEW year!!!!
in response to someone who said Prettydimples trimmed too much, I do NOT agree with that person.Prettydimples is a professional hair stylist, so i am confident that she knows JUSt how much to trim in order to keep her hair healthy. She is making good decisions obviously as evidenced by her hair growth. She has taught me so much as a new natural hair woman wh/ led to y hair being thicker & stronger. When we're more supportive, people, others w/ support us in return. U get what u put out.
Your hair is growing, you can tell by the color. But it does look like you did more than a trim... lol Those braids are cute. I think I'd like my braids more if I had the length u have so I could braid w/o extensions. Mine is still pretty short. Keep working on your hair it's looking great and keep us updated on how it's doing.
Preety dimples your hair has grown but I think when you trimm you always take a little too much hair off.. I wish you the best in 2010 with your hair..
Your hair turned out nice :). I've found that an easy way to take down tiny braids is to get in the shower soak my hair with water, then pile on the conditioner (I use suave), and take groups of 5-10 braids and use a denman brush or a fine tooth comb and unravel the braids from the bottom up. I twist each section loosely as I finsh unraveling, then move on to the next. I can usually take my hair down from tiny brids in about a half hour. Try it out when you take your's down. Happy New Year!
Hey girl, I'm going to re-do my hair in this style also, I too said i would never do it again because it takes so long to take out, but it looks so good and its a wonderful protective style. What better way to start the New Year than with a new hair style. Happy New Years!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the braids, when I do my braid next time, I will try to not braid it to the end, it might take the take out time down, and the put in time quickier.
thanks for sharing the link to ebonyprincessh. Her hair is amazing!!! I really like it. The both of you have inspired me to do protective styling again.
Genius minds think alike :) I have been doing this for the past 4 months. I have been able to leave it in for 6 weeks and hope to stretch this present set for 8 weeks. They are great for working out :)
Sounds like a good idea. I have been thinking about braiding my hair for 2010 (different styles, but my hair without added hair). When I braid my hair I can never get it close to my scalp. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Oh well, practice makes perfect...
Great resolution! I can not wait until I am able to get braids!! You have a nice length for two years. I hope you are successful with your resolution!
I really enjoy your videos even though I don't usually comment but I am excited to see your hair growth progress in 2010. I know you can do it. Good Luck.
Super cute box braids! I use to wear mine like this a lot when it was longer. I would even use the small yellow perm rods on the ends to curl them. I love these!
These are SOO cute, you make me want to put these mini braids in my hair, but I am so afraid that I will loose my patience trying to take them down.

Too cute! i will be glad when my hair grows out..

OMANI91 2 years ago
i want to do that but I always do twist which don't last as long because I'm scared it wont come out very easily if I do tghem small but my hair is thin so i don't want to do them big... any advice?
annebreal 2 years ago
I may have to make a similar journey to parallel yours. I came into this because I wanted a BA, "power to the people" afro (my hair was fine before the chop), and three years into it, I don't feel any closer to my goal than I was when I started. I don't have to take rests from doing a lot of styling, because I'm the queen of low manipulation. I simply do not give my hair enough attention.
Good luck! I look forward to whatever videos you have to show us in the meantime.
alittlesickducksucks 2 years ago
Your hair is beautiful, If you have time, can you show pics of how you styled your twists and braids to keep us motivated to maintain our protective styles too? As for length retention, you hair looks super healthy and from your dyed hair I can tell it is growing quite a bit, maybe you could stretch the time between your trims a little bit longer.
afrikurl 2 years ago
This looks really good on you! I want to try it on my daughters hair. Beautiful!

Your hair is long in the front as well as the back. How do I keep the front part of my hair on my head to start grow... it keeps breaking?
aboundinghealth 2 years ago
This is soo cute...seems like it is going to be long to take out though and i thought combing out my coil out was hard...lol

The shea butter mix is awesome. My mom noticed a difference and ask what I'd used after the 1st time I tried it. And your hair has grown quite a bit since your initial video. Take a tjourney throw all of them and you'll see.

Hey! I'm doing the same thing, you know, keeping my hair in braids for awhile so my hair can rest. I just got my hair braided yesterday. I hope to keep them in for at least a month.
jannalyn06 2 years ago
BTW-ur hair DID grow, you can't tell, but I can. I see the growth. It's funny cuz I don't think mine is growing, but shrinkage can fool you.
kharyzma4u 2 years ago
That's what i was thinking too. Im gonna do a protectictive style, braids or twists or flat twists, leave it in 4 awhile then wear it loose, then start over so I can see some length. gr8 minds think alike! happy new Year!! Always luv seeing ur vids!!

sand07228 2 years ago
Hi, great vid. Quick question. As a stylist, how long would you recommend keeping the individuals in...I heard you mention you'd leave it in for about a month..would you recommend longer? Is 6 weeks too long??
luvlyone20 2 years ago
luvlyone20- it depends on your hair. i know me after about 4 weeks my hair may start to lock and i don't want that. but if you have a looser curl pattern or you know that your hair takes longer to lock then you can leave them in longer.
PRETTYDIMPLES01 2 years ago

I watched you braid your hair before on your other video, watched KinkyKurlyQueen (??) braid hers, and now I watched you do it again in this video. . . and finally, finally, I'm 100% convinced that I can try this! LOL I've been hesitant b/c of the time it takes to braid and take down. . . but I've been inspired! Thanks, prettydimples01 and Happy new year!!!
twistsandcurls 2 years ago
twistsandcurls- she braids her own hair. you should try it. just take your time when you take them down and when you feel yourself getting tired or irritaed just take a break. thats what i plan to do this time. im going to break it up in two days
PRETTYDIMPLES01 2 years ago
Good advice, lady! You're right, patience is key. It's true, for some reason it's like I'm trying to race against time! LOL I'm goin to try it maybe at the middle or end of the month. . .trying to see how long my "small" twists last. . . I'll keep you posted!

in response to someone who said Prettydimples trimmed too much, I do NOT agree with that person.Prettydimples is a professional hair stylist, so i am confident that she knows JUSt how much to trim in order to keep her hair healthy. She is making good decisions obviously as evidenced by her hair growth. She has taught me so much as a new natural hair woman wh/ led to y hair being thicker & stronger. When we're more supportive, people, others w/ support us in return. U get what u put out.

VeryHappy2bMe- hey thanks for that. :)
PRETTYDIMPLES01 2 years ago
Nice!
notsoshy28 2 years ago
Your hair is growing, you can tell by the color. But it does look like you did more than a trim... lol Those braids are cute. I think I'd like my braids more if I had the length u have so I could braid w/o extensions. Mine is still pretty short. Keep working on your hair it's looking great and keep us updated on how it's doing.

Really cute, I am gonna miss ur videos though but I mos def understand about the low manipilation of ur hair. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
tjbmom123 2 years ago
Your hair turned out nice :). I've found that an easy way to take down tiny braids is to get in the shower soak my hair with water, then pile on the conditioner (I use suave), and take groups of 5-10 braids and use a denman brush or a fine tooth comb and unravel the braids from the bottom up. I twist each section loosely as I finsh unraveling, then move on to the next. I can usually take my hair down from tiny brids in about a half hour. Try it out when you take your's down. Happy New Year!

Sounds like a good idea. I have been thinking about braiding my hair for 2010 (different styles, but my hair without added hair). When I braid my hair I can never get it close to my scalp. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Oh well, practice makes perfect...
