in all honesty the only "real" risk to showing serial numbers is if a criminal sees it and then puts that number on a similar stolen gun....other than that nothing can really happen....
btw for safety reasons it makes way more sense to email ur serial numbers and such to urself in multiple email accounts...that way info is available even if ur house is looted then burned...

You actually can't find out somebody's home address via their IP address. However, you CAN find their ISP through their IP address, and if you had some need to find the person, perhaps they did something to you that violates their ISP's ToS, you can contact their ISP with their IP address and they can give you the personal info of the owner of that IP address.
Some people say u should not put up your city on Facebook. I think as long as you don't put up your address your OK. They would have to check every house in your city for u. I believe the court-case in question was Allegheny County Sportsmen's League Vs. Rendell - "the database at issue is not a registry of ownership, but rather, merely reflects the applications/records of sale for handgun purchases that occur in Pennsylvania..." That was a PA supreme court ruling.
If you're going through your cable company, yes they can know about it. They pretty much know most of what you are seeing/watching(how do you think shows get ratings, i.e. how networks decide what shows to keep and what to can? They know who is watching it...
One thing Jeff, which I mentioned before......... Handgun transfers done in PA are reported to the Pennsylvania State Place under the authority of the Pennsylvania Uniform Firearms act, those transfers are kept in a database by the PA state police, which they are legally allowed to keep, due to a court ruling that this database was not actually a "gun registration" due to the fact that it did not require Pennsylvanians to report guns they already own/purchased out of the commonwealth.
just a couple of things i wanted to say about the video i never saw:
1. it doesn't matter if someone sees your gun's serial #'s. it's not like they can do anything.
2. the sheriff of Monroe County gives those forms out not for your benefit, but for his. he's been known to request those forms to see what guns you have, or for legal matters.
lots of folks don't understand gun laws in PA, or anywhere else, for that matter.
In a school they had people come and talk about bullying over the internet.

Kildas is correct: your IP information is quite hidden and difficult to link to you personally (an IP address doesn't correspond to a physical address unless you have access to your service provider's files).

An IP address will give a city and state, or city and province, quite usually. Hidden? With basic programming knowledge in PERL, I could send you to a website which would grab your ip# and log it into a database and send it back to me. From that, I could get your city and state, for starters. Also used to have a program that would rather easily pull up account data from ISP's, once provided the IP.

I agree with you about not worrying about showing the serial number on your guns, but you are mistaken about the Pennsylvania handgun sales record. Fact if that all sales in PA are logged by the state police when they call in your PICS check. These records are held and are not destroyed within 72 hours per the law. Sent you a msg with more information.
Regarding a log book: I took pictures of all of my guns with a number beside each one. Then I made a detailed, numbered list of each gun with a description and the serial number. I put one copy in my files, and another copy in my safe deposit box.
why bother with a serial number. if you want to find someones address you rub two braincells together, watch the videos for local landmarks and spend 20 minutes on google earth.

If someone is willing to break into every gun shop in your city and check their files until they find your info so they can do you harm, they would have to have a pretty serious grudge. With that kind of motivation, they are going to figure out how to find you anyway.

there is no database available to the public that would give ones info based on a serial number on a firearm, infact if one site or database did exist it would be completely illegal. I got that from a govt man

One thing Jeff, which I mentioned before......... Handgun transfers done in PA are reported to the Pennsylvania State Place under the authority of the Pennsylvania Uniform Firearms act, those transfers are kept in a database by the PA state police, which they are legally allowed to keep, due to a court ruling that this database was not actually a "gun registration" due to the fact that it did not require Pennsylvanians to report guns they already own/purchased out of the commonwealth.

just a couple of things i wanted to say about the video i never saw:
1. it doesn't matter if someone sees your gun's serial #'s. it's not like they can do anything.
2. the sheriff of Monroe County gives those forms out not for your benefit, but for his. he's been known to request those forms to see what guns you have, or for legal matters.
lots of folks don't understand gun laws in PA, or anywhere else, for that matter.

Kildas is correct: your IP information is quite hidden and difficult to link to you personally (an IP address doesn't correspond to a physical address unless you have access to your service provider's files).

An IP address will give a city and state, or city and province, quite usually. Hidden? With basic programming knowledge in PERL, I could send you to a website which would grab your ip# and log it into a database and send it back to me. From that, I could get your city and state, for starters. Also used to have a program that would rather easily pull up account data from ISP's, once provided the IP.

I agree with you about not worrying about showing the serial number on your guns, but you are mistaken about the Pennsylvania handgun sales record. Fact if that all sales in PA are logged by the state police when they call in your PICS check. These records are held and are not destroyed within 72 hours per the law. Regarding a log book: I took pictures of all of my guns with a number beside each one. Then I made a detailed, numbered list of each gun with a description and the serial number. I put one copy in my files, and another copy in my safe deposit box.

One of the biggest issues with the gun/"tactical" community on YouTube is that there are an over abundance of hyper paranoid folks who freak out over the smallest things.
This begs to question: If you're prepared why are you so paranoid? It seems to me that if you've got your sh!t together you have no reason to be paranoid. That's just me.
