  • Hi Ron,

I have to admit that the title of this song caught my attention.

It was fun to hear you sing this and play the banjo.

Is there an instrument that you DON'T play? : ))

    Great work.

    5 stars...as always!

  • Never noticed the bass cello before - now I can hear it there and it's nicely played.

My needs have always won out as an adult. Hence my abject failure in terms of any worldly successes.

Kind of miss the folky side of you now I hear it again but really enjoy the music hall sophistication and changes too - ever thought about combining the two styles?

  • nice

  • Hi Ron, this is a wonderful song!

Your wants are not always what you need but sometimes you need what you want to get happy!

I wish you always the luck to get what you need to be happy but remember this song: "You can't always get what you want" - so there are still negotiations to make!

You gave ME (with this song) what I needed today!

Have a nice christmas time and a happy new year!

    -Bernd

  • Like this new original Ron! Glad to see you playing the banjo! 5*s

    Rocket Rob

  • Thanks Rob, and keep warm up there in the great Norhern clime :o) -Ron

  • ron, my favorite line is "But for every road that's taken you'll wonder where the other roads lead". the stones sang, "you can't always get what you want". this song presents that fact via a warmer, simpler, slice of life conversation. the folk mood established by the banjo lends a satisfying whimsy to the mood. very nice chord changes within the structure. thanks for posting this one, chuck.

  • Thanks Chuck, and that Stones song is one of my favorites. Thanks a lot. -Ron

  • I like this a lot...especially the lyrics. Of course i like it....it's Ron's music!

  • Oz, hi are you. Great to hear from you and thanks very much for stopping in. I hope all is well with you and I really enjoyed that poem you read the other day. Talk to you later. -Ron

  • Home run, Ron! The lyrics, melody, chords, and your usual unique instrumentation—everything clicks. And as others have said, exceptional vocal performance.

  • Hi Les thanks and tata for now :o) -Ron

  • Thanks for send Jane , Nice tune :o)tm *****

  • Very cool song Ron. I didn't even know you played the Banjo.

  • Interesting Ron, loved the mix :) ...Best Regards, Jack

  • Hi there Jack, great to hear from you. I hope you are getting ready for Christmas now. We are reeling them in now :o) -Ron

  • Great lyrics and melody! Love the changes and "wow" on that recording! Some of you guys record sound better than the big labels. You produce a sound that's more authentic, warmer... great music! Suze

  • Thanks Suze, and the big labels want that "sanitized" sound with everything perfectly balanced and played... but that usually takes the life right out of the music. Thanks very much. -Ron

  • Very well put! I'm saving this quote.

  • Awesome!!!

    Grandma mary

  • I always like a good banjo picking song. You get five stars for this one and more. Cameragirl Jane sent this to me.

    Bill

    Robby

  • Hi Robby thanks and I hope you are ready for the holidays. -Ron

  • Excellent song Ron. I love the banjo. You really put your soul into it!

  • I can't really add anything that hasn't already been said Ron, this original song has it all. I put it in the "banjo vocal" list on the Songwriters Collection Channel...Kathy

  • Hi Kathy, and a belated thank you for your nice comment, and for listing this on your great channel. -Ron

  • Dear great musician Ron: You did a really fine job with this song, it sounds really beautiful, one of your best songs and I have heard all your songs. I like it.

    Have a good time

    Michael

  • Thank you Michael very much. Seasons grettings from USA. -Ron

  • Ron, I cannot decide what I love more - the lyrics or the music of that song. Great chord change at 0.24.

And your voice is really very good on this recording. This song has a quite big range but you sing it so easily.

...but for every road that's taken you'll wonder where the other roads lead.

How true... your German friend Anette

  • Hi Anette. Sorry for the late reply but it is a busy time now :o) Thank you very much and grettings back to you from USA. -Ron

  • That was wonderful Ron, I enjoyed it very much. A special thanks to Oswlek for sharing this. Is that a long neck banjo? Pete Seeger I believe invented the long neck which was really great for folk music. I had one years ago and now wish I had it back. Have a great day Ron! Mark

  • Hey Mark, thanks, and I think the one Pete Seeger uses has an even longer neck than this one. I really admire Pete's playing and John Hartford as well. Yea, get you another banjo Mark, because I know you will make great us of it. -Ron

  • So well don Ron! Such cool lyrics, and the extra music was wonderful!! Your voice sounds really great in this one too! faved:)) *****

  • Awesome share Jane...Thank you!! =)

  • Hey Jane, much thanks, and I hope you are getting some Christmas spirit now :o) -Ron

  • Incredible lyrics, Ron particularly the first two lines of each verse. I also love how you crafted the instrumentation on the third line of each verse, lifts the song in an unexpected way, and the pause at the end sets up the refrain perfectly.

Incredible bridge. I was a bit worried that you were going to use the close down line at the end the first time around, but of course you brilliantly left it open and closed the second time around. Great musicallity of the interlude between the two.

  • Good share Justin, I like Ron's music a lot. Mark

  • Thank you Jusitn. I had plans to make a longer bridge with a harmonica solo but I'm glad I changed my mind. That would have made it longer but not better. Thanks, -Ron

  • Great song and terrific song idea too!

You always do such a great job with the instruments!

  • Thanks John, and I'm telling all my Northern friends to keep warm, so keep warm now. I heard it gets kinda cold up y our way :o) -Ron

  • I'll do that! It's two degrees outside right now.

  • Excellent Ron! Really like Your melody and banjo...writing is superb - and ones a pretty shiny thing standing right in front of you -Yep

  • Hi Michael, thanks and keep warm up your way because I know its getting cold now. -Ron

  • Damn it, a voice so youthful, fresh, poppy and catchy shouldn't be coupled with a slice of banjo playing so earthy...now you're just having your cake and eating it too maestro. Brilliant stuff.

  • Hi Pete, and I wish I had a more blusey voice but I just don't so what comes out is what it is. The banjo I am still learning but I am gettting to like it now. I can never play bluegrass style but I hope I can handle the folk style in time. Thanks Pete. -Ron

  • Somehow it is a good song for the opening of the Copenhagen meeting;-)

What we want...And what we truly need.

    Great singing also Bro;-)!

  • Yes, I agree, hehe. Thanks Boucrate and I hope you are prepared for the Northern winter. Keep warm mon fre. -Ron

  • this has a ring of buddhism to it......I LIKE IT!!!

    MICHAEL

  • Thanks Micahel, and I hope you are getting the Christmas spirit now :o) -Ron

  • excellent original Ron! 5*****

  • The first thing I noticed was your great sounding vocals. Ron,you did a top job on this charming, catchy tune(fantastic writing!) Straight forward, simple and above all, very very entertaining.***** WELL DONE. your friend, winston

  • Thanks Winston, but I take a back seat to your singing, really. You sing with the kind of heart I wish I could. Later, -Ron

  • Really lovely, Ron - beautifully written & performed and pretty appropriate at this time of needless excess. Also, an extra star for being the first YouTube original I've heard with 'ingenue' in the lyric. Years ago, a friend tried to catch me out on the meaning of that - after he'd bought the K.D. Lang album of the same name. I triumphed, however, having come across it in a Balzac novel whilst still in school. lol. So, that's 6****** I owe you :p Cya!

  • Hi Stu, Thanks and I hope you are getting the Christmas spirit now. I am :o) Yes, and I knew a "real" ingenue, or so she seemed so to me, haha. Thanks again.

    -Ron

  • Nice

    all the best

    Kean

  • Great song, Ron, and fantastic arrangement. I like the bass on the two, Paul-like, cause everyone else plays on the one, but you did it!!!! Great! And the melody on "...that you should always go where you pleased...", beautiful!

    Best wishes, Frank

  • Thanks Frank, and yea I never use drums so I tried to create some rhythm with bass and harmonica on this one. Thanks a lot. -Ron

  • this is excellent.. well done 5*

  • Thanks Frank, and yea I never use drums so I tried to create some rhythm with bass and harmonica on this one. Thanks a lot. -Ron

  • Excellent song Ron !!!!bravo *****

  • HI Marie-Alix, thank you, and did you noticed I used a French word in the song? hehe :o) -Ron

  • Fabulous, Ron! I always love your music and this song had great appeal. Richard sent it 'round and I got it through the shares. Will be listening to this one again and again. Suze

  • Way cool song Ron...John Hartford got nuthun on you brotha...seriously.....sweet mix....loved it~Rich

  • Thank you Richard, and thanks for mentioning John Harford because he was one of my very favorite artists. I loved his folky way of playing the banjo which was totally different from the Bluegrass players. Thanks. -Ron

  • Cool...see Pm comming...now!

  • Wow it's the right time for this song for sure :)) great job!

    mel.

  • HI Mel, thank you very much. Great to hear from you. -Ron
