I don't think I ever had a homosexual teacher, but that's because I was raised thinking "straight" was the default position.
Truth is, all of my teachers could have been homosexual, or none of them could be. But it doesn't matter because apart from 1 or 2, they were all awesome and I love the memories of each and every one of them.
I had a gay Biology teacher in high school. He was open about his sexuality and no one expressed negative feelings that I am aware of. He was well respected and I'm glad I met him.
Oh and for the record my first impression of you is that you were fairly straight but that's because most people are programed to notice old fashioned standards of what males are including me (I've been programed too) and I'm not complaining, I'm just noting.
my european history teacher was gay and he is one of the most intelligent, intellectual, well-respected, and loved teachers at my school... no one has ever made any hateful comments to him, to my knowledge, at least. it seems to me that in high school, at least where i live, most kids just live and let live. he's actually pretty open about it and has a partner and adopted son. no one really has a problem with it. he's a great teacher and thats that
can i ask for advice from anyone who views this comment: well basically its a gay teacher at my school and everyone knows he's gay for the most part and the other just question his sexuality. i think he is really cute and so does my best friend. she bet me a hundred dollars to "try something" with him after school. which is number one kind of weird but i dont mind because hes adorable and i wanted to do it anyway. hes like 24 or 25. periodically i catch him starring at me. what should i do?
Seriously in this day and age, being a gay man and a teacher the school won't really care, it won't even come up in the interview. The school Principle isn't going to ask if you're gay. We had a couple gay teachers at my school and they were some of the funniest, smartest and most helpful teachers and I went to an all boys, anglican private school. And everyone thought they were great. Like anything it's a business and a workplace. Keep your private life out of your work place and you'll be fine
I'm half way through my Teacher program in Ontario, Canada and I didn't outright tell my students that I was gay or out myself but in general they were really good around all of the other teachers at the school who were. Here it's mainly the grade nines and tens who joke around like that but that's also because they're somewhat immature and finding themselves. I have to agree with you about the parents though. That's something I'm more worried about.
My band director in jr high was gay, I don't know that he actually told anyone, but everyone just knew. His bf came to class a few times, and they kept eyeing each other across the room, it wasn't any more awkward than it would have been if he was straight. I was at the movies watching Titanic with my parents and he and his boyfriend sat right behind us. No one really cared, and this was in OKLAHOMA!
when I was at school, I was simply relieved to know that a teacher wasn't a douche. If you treat people fairly (as hard as that might seem at times) then you will be respected. The thing I find annoying with some gays is stereotypes; the obviously contrived nasal voice, and over expressiveness with hands and facial expressions. I can't take them seriously because they're not taking themselves seriously. Yeah I think it's funny on a casual level, but not for promoting a learning environment imo
Just a question, but do you think the teaching profession attracts a lot of gay individuals? I've noticed quite a few teachers now, and in my high school experience that pinged my gaydar quite a bit. In addition, I realized that a lot of my previous teachers were lesbians. (I don't have a good lez-dar so it required me friending them on Facebook to realize it) Gay teachers almost seem common now.
Gay student teacher here. No one knows yet, except my fellow student teachers, and I plan to keep it that way. Personal and professional life separate and all that. But no problem with providing a safe space for gay teens or even becoming a role-model if they needed one. If a parent ever got off on my case, I suspect I would be polite, but politely tell them to fuck off in my head, but still not take any abuse.
Who would want a teacher that is a Homosexual to talk to their kid about sex and partying? Certainly the view of a Homosexual would be contrary to many parents standards.
My boyfriend is gay (clearly :]) and he is a secondary school teacher. i think some of the students know but im not too sure, he's never got any flack for being gay and actually the students speculate him and one of his fellow teachers (female) being together haha, i think he just doesnt want to draw attention to the fact that he's gay, at the end of the day it's his private life and not his school life x x x
i have friends who are male teachers and are gay. i haven't heard them talk about the students or faculty saying anything rude or causing them any trouble. i can definitely understand where it might be nerve-wracking tho. i guess it depends on where you live and how homosexuality is regarded in that school. if the school is tolerant of everyone, you are less likely to have issues. brodhe, i had no clue you were studying to be a teacher! awesome! :)
Its a non issue here in UK - like you say its all about how you handle it - honesty and integrity - it is your personal life so not for daily consumption - out the closit but not in your face works for us : )
my high school had 3 teachers and a vice principal that were all lesbians all of the students new but not because they came out but from stories of people seeing them with there girlfriends and truthfully it didnt matter everyone treated them the same as all the other teachers it really wasnt an issue when you saw them you didnt see who they loved you saw the teacher
I'm going to disagree with some previous commenters. I think you should be open and honest about your sexuality - and teach in a school that can deal with it. It is going to become known one way or the other, and you want to control the circumstances in which that happens. Making it work starts with respecting yourself and knowing plenty about what you're teaching. I taught for 10 years and loved it. As a long-time subscriber to your vids, I think you're going to be a great teacher.
I'm assuming that you're openly gay at your university. Has there been much apprehension from other students going into teaching an the professors that tutor you if/when they found out you were gay? And was there any trouble when deliberating what school to place you in for intern-ship because of your sexuality?
@JadeLycra2 I don't deny it, no. But whether that means everyone can just 'tell' or not, I'm not sure. I've had no apprehension what so ever, and I'm rather convinced at least one of my tutors himself was gay.
Just FYI, there is no reason that you 'need' to tell people that you are gay working anywhere. I've worked at a school, not as a teacher, but in a IT Helpdesk capacity, and some of the students found out about my sexuality. I could speculate about the rumours that floated around, but no one makes a big deal out of it.
As long as there's respect from your peers (staff) and the students, it isn't a problem. And if you think there's speculation, talk to other senior staff. They'll offer advice.
Under no circumstances should a teacher get involved with a student!! Do you have sexual education in Australia? Well, we don't. Personally, I have a similar dilemma, cause I would like to be a pediatrician, but I am envisioning all parents saying : "No way, he will turn my child gay!" or worse "he is a child molester"!!
In my opinion, teachers in general must be taught how to teach children about tolerance, acceptance and behaviour. It's not only about maths and physics all the time. I was very upset with my teachers, because they were seeing that I was being bullied and did nothing!! I think gay teachers can really help in this matter but they should pick their words carefully when talking to children/teens about sexuality and sexual behaviour, cause they are often misunderstood.
I taught high school for a few years. Hope to never have to teach again, or have to discipline somebody else's kid. My sexuality was NOT a topic of conversation, but that didn't stop speculation. The kids were basically OK, nosy & uncooth, but bearable. You can excuse a lot by reminding yourself that they're just kids. But the administrators were supposed to be adults. I was made to feel very much unwelcome & an outsider. I have no idea how much of that had to do with my perceived sexuality. :-/
I think it's sad that it would even matter to people whether a teacher is gay, straight, bi, or whatever. The only thing that should matter is how the person is as a teacher. Their sexual preference is a completely separate matter and should have nothing to do with how they are judged as an educator. What's even worse is that parents are sometimes more ignorant than the students on the issue.
Gay teachers are hilarious! I had a few gay teachers in my high school and one in my primary school. I even had a lezzer in high school. I am all for gay teachers. I have found they are a bit more aware of schoolyard sexual bullying and act a bit more promptly on the issue.
It's great to have a blend of teachers from a variety of backgrounds and sexualities all jumbled together, so the needs of each student can be understood from multiple angles.
My senior year we found out my drama teacher was gay in high school after a friend saw him and his husband coming out of a movie theater holding hands or something. But since we all had a ton of respect for him no one dared spread it around or make jokes. One of the freshmen actually mouthed off about him behind his back and called him f*g and all of us jumped on her for it. If the students respect the teacher enough I don't think sexuality will be a big issue.
So true and thank you for all ur videos I am studying to become a high school teacher and this video helps
