@Qillaq91 Neither Qillaq91. There are many types of laptops, this one is neither gaming or "general purpose", but it is a mobile workstation class laptop. Work oriented, like Thinkpads, probooks, and macbook pro's(professional). This 8540W carries within a graphics card specializing in CAD (computer aided design) excelling especially when working on 3d models in wireframe mode, and when working with vectors objects.
although i know this is a workstation class laptop could you possibly use this for some moderately heavy gaming? i play a lot of modern warfare 2 and starcraft 2 but also do a lot of photo and video work and i was wondering if this laptop could handle those games with high settings at max screen resolution
@streetlegend21 I mainly use mine for college work, but I do play some flight simulator on the side, and I would say that it does very well considering it's not built (at all) for gaming. I get about 35fps at moderately high settings. If you do get the 8540w, *make sure* you get the FX1800M graphics card. The other options will not be able to handle gaming (I had to return my first one for that reason). Your best bet for heavy gaming will be the 8740w with the FX3800 or 5000M-very expensive
@streetlegend21 (part 2) I also do a lot of photo work (jeez...we're similar...) and I understand the need for a matte screen, but I might recommend the Dell XPS 15 with the i7 and the nicest graphics card. It's much cheaper and will outperform this laptop in everything but CAD/business/photo applications. If you are set on the HP, grab one with the dreamcolor screen (may have to run games at less than 1080 for good fps. Oh, the tradeoffs...) It's really a great screen.
@streetlegend21 I play SCII on it. Today I noticed a bit of lag in a 3v3 match for the first time, settings medium, using my monitor with the 880M. Model details on high I think caused the lag when someone came at the main defense with a ton of maxed out carriers and mutas. Didn't crash, it slowed down the templar micro though. Most the time the game runs very well. I'm unable to play Rift right now, i'm in touch with support, likely card or driver, hope for a solution or use another rig.
@MushroomHoneyCream Heat is handled very well on my machine. It never gets hot on my wrists or on my lap or on a glass table. I have noticed the bottom can get hot on a bed, but it hasn't gotten super hot on me. I think the elitebooks have been designed for heat dissipation with various graphic cards and processors so I feel it's strong in general. My gpu is the 880M, and processor dual core i7 920. Heat is handled well with this build. Heat would also depend on configuration.
@MushroomHoneyCream Mine gets very hot with the i7-820 quadcore and the FX 1800M. I finally managed to overheat it yesterday and the whole thing just turned to black and shut off with no warning at all. Mine is one of the higher-end configurations of the model, so if you stick with the i7 dual core, you'll probably be fine.
I got this reply from a forum one of the user also experienced blacks out, but it is not heat related, it is random (1-2 times per day) and after 2 on-site visits, the issue was not fixed. He said that if you're certain that it is heat related, then there is something wrong with the heat sinks or thermal pads/paste which should be replaced.Perhaps you could check out this forum (forum.notebookreviewdotcom) there's many users sharing info on their Elitebooks ...
Hey guys, thanks for the views and replies. @alpha1010 This the the model with the Dream color display, and it's very nice. It's the nicest display I've seen. Now I study in a lab with a lot of laptops and it has by far the nicest screen. Working on a laptop which does not have the third control button is just not the same and the typing is great. Daily use so far the laptop hasn't disappointed and is a pleasure to work with.
Can you tell me of laptop,
Is gaming laptop or normal laptop?!

Hey i was just wondering how's the heat dissipation, is it hot after using it for hours ?
As i'm considering between a Dell 4500M or a HP EliteBook 8540w Laptop...

I'm considering a Quad Model too, probably a i7-740QM or others..
What happen after that ? Did you return to HP under warranty ?
MushroomHoneyCream 1 year ago
@MushroomHoneyCream I may. It depends on whether it happens again, because it's a great laptop otherwise.
