@winekenzotv ja man, ik loop er al maanden mee in mijn hoofd maar wist niet van wie het was, ik zong vroeger al mee...ze kommuh nie, zu komme wel!!! ha ha!!!
this version just doen't have the energy that jon anderson or crissie hynde put into it."i feel love is"more donna's style, which i might add is one of my favs.
All I know is I listen to every genre of music from country to death metal, and this version is far better than Jon Anderson's. I have heard him singing this and it is has no kind of feeling and substance compared to this. I know he wrote it, but I am sure he would agree that this is a great version and am sure he is happy that Donna took this and made it a great song.
Not completely. Not Chrissie dit but Moodwings; Chrissie was a guestsinger. Moodswings - Spiritual High (Part 1, 2 and 3) is based on this wonderfull song.
This is a great song. It was too far ahead of it's time and was not given the airplay it deserved. The end has many of the people who participated in the "We Are The World" (1985) doing the chorus. It is also covered by a band called "Moodswings" but then Donna also covered this from another band Jon & Vangelis as mentioned in earlier comments. I think that Ms. Summer's version was the best of them all. That is MY opinion.
@Chrliesangelsman .......point well taken, However, This is a bit pretentious for a Diva...Boogie and save the World?.....She Should "Work hard for her Money"...but not with other's people music or message....Ahead of it's time would be a credit to its proper and rightful composers.....But...Let there be peace amongst all good people....
@78rohan: Had it not been for Donna's rendition of this song, then very few people would probably even have heard of this song. They were paid very well, I am sure for the use of this compostion. Many obscure songwriters owe a great deal of gratitude to the stars who made them & their work famous. J & V's version of this song sounds totally different than her version, she made her own version of this song basically. (cont'd)
(cont'd) I don't know exactly what you meant by "boogie & save the world" so it is hard to respond to that. If I understand correctly what you mean, then the same thing could be said about: "We Are The World", "Dear Mr Jesus", & tons of other pop tunes that are geared at a social cause. I don't see why it would be different for Ms. Summer. Besides, why should she NOT cover this song if she had the composers' blessing (which she obviously did)?
PS: In my comment "ahead of it's time" I will agree, that credit should go to the songwriters also, and my bad for not saying so, however, I ALSO meant the sound of the musical production itself (the orchistration) was ahead of it's time -- the instrumentation in the tracks themselves -- So yes, Donna Summer & her production team (Quincy Jones, etc) deserve credit also.
@Chrliesangelsman .....It is apparent you might not have heard of Jon Anderson and or Vangelis....Jon As a member of YES....Has sold hundreds of Millions of Records..At one concert alone 115.000 People....for over 40 years he has inspired many...this song is simply one he chose to perform with Vangelis...A Multi Platinum selling artist in his own right....I simply Think Donna was pretentious...I mean Jon & Vangelis...only 2 people...
@78rohan: I never said he wasn't tallented or inspirational. As much as I love the band YES, I can not deny that Donna Summer was a much bigger star then, AND NOW - which is clearly reflected in record sales & grammys. (cont'd)
(cont'd) You have a right to feel that Donna was being "pretentious" (I have no idea WHERE you would get basis for that claim, as I have never heard her claim to have WRITTEN the song, inspired it to BE written, or stated SHE MADE THE SONG WHAT IT IS, although she did) and it is my right to feel that statement is totally and completely false.
@78rohan you need to understand that Summer was coming up on a Christian "born again" phase.... at one point she turned away her 70's songs...for moral reasons.
I have always been a big fan of Ms Summer, but I suggest you check out Angelique Kidjo's version from the Quincy Jones 75th birthday concert. You can find it on Youtube as # THr5uvjMbhM, and it's available on BluRay with lossless DTS sound. Kidjo sings it with SO much soul and passion.
Wow, thanks for sharing Angelique kidjo's version. She blew me away. I was almost out of my seat. If you watched everyone on stage, they were feeling her and the joy was pouring out. WOW, thanks again. :)
this is absolutely the ultimate version of this track - Moroder producing, sequencer meets the gospel of donna's incredible voice, transcending both. literally ecstasy!
Jon Anderson wrote this song and allowed Donna Summer to cover it. She did a good job...check out the original version of this song by the artist who wrote it...Jon Anderson with Vangelis playing most of the music...a much better version!
some'songs' are just perfect this was remixed but nothing beats this version as 4 'god' hmm im no christian its a choice get real Sometimes you looove the sound of some singers j holliday s eye is on the sparrow a mahalia jackson song gospel! whooda beleived it it rocks and a not 2 all u remixers can someone do a 'longer' version of this without the chaka/chaka khaaaan bits and no overdubs ie a 'sypathetic' one but still keep the flow theres a challenge PERFECTION
Michael Jackson was singing in the background in different songs of Donna Summer and he wrote a couple of songs for her too. I thought he wrote this song for Donna Summer too, but I don't know for sure....
She didn't speak highly for the album when it was released and she said this album is her least favorite out all of the albums she did . But, personally, I think this is Donna's best work yet. Thanks to all involved in this self-titled album from 1982.
Not one living artist can even dream of the lineup of the background choir; Christopher Cross, James Ingram, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder... to name a few. The instrumentalists were also connected to Toto. On other songs artists like Bruce Springsteen, Michael Sembello and of course Jon Anderson and Vangelis made guest-appearances. A real fabulous album, and a fantastic song.
I didn't know that, that's really cool. And now thinking about it as Qunicy Jones producedthis track it makes absolute sense! Q has a knack of bringing people together, plus they're all his mates you listed there. Cheers
You're so right! The thing i have trouble understanding (i was born in the early 90s) is why was't this a huge worldwide hit. On paper it seems so perfect yet it only reached no. 41 in US and no. 14 in Uk!??? Number 1 in Holland though...
Donna Summer is special to me. As an atheist, I was never drawn to God, but in her I have felt the divine. Her voice, her spirit, her essential nature - all moved me to the core of my being. This song is especially powerful. When I die, it will be played at my funeral. I never met her, but she has connected with me in a profound way. Jerry, not just Michael, there was a whole group of big name singers backing her up. I can't remember them all but if I see the list again I'll post them all.
I know it is truly amazing what you can learn here about the background and history of music/songs
I thought I remembered her getting in hot water over recording this, vangelis did not approve or something, so that may be totally incorrect now knowing that Quincy et al were involved
Great song and performance. I think this album came out in '82. It was from the same album as Love is in Control- Also, check out "The Woman In Me" -also, very good.
i know, but isnt that cool? it was b4 the whole 'We are the World' thing, but they all got together to sing backround! i've heard the song b4, but never knew so thats whats so cool 2 me :)
This song was originally recorded by Jon & Vangelis from their 1981 album The Friends of Mr Cairo. Jon Anderson wrote the lyrics and Vangelis composed, arranged and produced the music. Together they released four albums in total between 1979 and 1991. I like both versions for very different reasons.
Love the way Quincy Jones kept the original intact, and still added to Jon & Vangelis version with all the superstars in the choir. But all the dredits to this song go to the writer Jon Anderson.
Jon Anderson wrote this song and is clearly hearabel in this version. Quincy Jones as the producer also put his fingerprint on it, with the all-celebs choire, but Donna Summer is on her best in this song. My compliments to all three of them.
Wow, the things I learn here! I always loved this song, so I come to check it out, and not only is it still as beautiful and uplifting as I remember, but I find out it was originally a Jon and Vangelis track, which does sound kinda obvious now that I know - you can hear their special sound :) I will check out their version now.
I always loved this this song but it is till a few days ago I found out who where singing in the background,as Darthvader would say "impressive,MOST impressive" ;) when quincy calls everybody comes running ;) also most impressive
This always reminds me of my first trip outside the UK that wasn't just a daytrip to France! My Dad's firm organised a weekend trip to Amsterdam and me and my best mate from school went along too. This was being played on all the radio stations as well as in the record shops of the Dutch city...happy memories of November 1982!
This take me back when I was flying back home from Colorado at the end of my summer holiday, listening to this song. I have cryed my eyes out because I did'nt wanted to leave.
This is timeless...The others are good, but sound dated.

Didn't she also perform this on an award show with the group Musical Youth?
ristobenjie 2 years ago
She performed this song with Musical Youth during her 1984 concert. My father recorded that concert and then remembering watching over and over!
jblucio3177 2 years ago
I saw that when I was about 13! I think on HBO! That was electric! If I could ever find that, I would upload it.

Thanks for the history on this song. I always assumed it was a 70's 1 hit wonder who fell into obscurity after this song. Amazing it was Jon.

The 90s cover is better to me.

If you had wonderful nights in Argos, you should try Littlewoods. It's like Argos, but a bit better.

Love the way Quincy Jones kept the original intact, and still added to Jon & Vangelis version with all the superstars in the choir. But all the dredits to this song go to the writer Jon Anderson.
stamatis53 3 years ago 2
Orignally written by Vangelis and Jon Anderson (front man to the group Yes).
firstmusic00 3 years ago 3
Jon Anderson wrote this song and is clearly hearabel in this version. Quincy Jones as the producer also put his fingerprint on it, with the all-celebs choire, but Donna Summer is on her best in this song. My compliments to all three of them.

Wow, the things I learn here! I always loved this song, so I come to check it out, and not only is it still as beautiful and uplifting as I remember, but I find out it was originally a Jon and Vangelis track, which does sound kinda obvious now that I know - you can hear their special sound :) I will check out their version now.
