Form to function see Diarmid cattle. Not Heck cattle which used 18 or more breeds for gene-pool. I used three or less. The idea was to create a tool for ecology. Studies show it is possible to see a ten fold increase in flora and fauna utilizing Highland cattle as Aurochs representitive species. We had 20 years experience and produced 13 colors. Regarding size.... breeding for current environmental conditions, thus smaller beast . A most useful tool during the largest mass extinction .
Size is less important than most think,.. But Heck cattle, has behavior problems, wrong horn formation, coat color is not always correct, DNA ( just forget it...).
If you don´t have problems to get only « looks alike aurochs» and not true aurochs, do a good selection inside Heck cattle and put the animals on a forest.
If you want to see true aurochsen again, wait for Project Tauros results.
They are planning to select and interbreed until they have something that resembles the auroch... They have a crude DNA map of the extinct auroch, but there wil be no DNA manipulation. Just something that looks like them, but very different.
aurochs were like 6 feet high and super aggressive. and yes, they have been extinct for 400 years, but scientists are planning to bring them back just like they did with that type of ibex a while back
breeding back , whilst limited on the number of species we can bring back compared to say dna and gene sequecning (tasmanian tiger etc), seems very successful. In fifty or so years, we have heck cattle from nothing, pretty close, tho still a distance to go, from aurochs. Quagga from faded-striped plains zebra are being more refined (see quagga project) and the tamusken dog is a good example
These, of course look nothing like Aurochs. Has anybody thought of breeding Spanish fighting cattle for size? They wouldn't be Aurochs but they would be a better match than Heck cattle.
Once the gene line has stopped thts it. Ud need propper Aurochs DNA and hightech bio engineering methods to even get close. These were just bred to resemble the Aurochs using modern cattle, as u can clearly see.
In some sense modern cattle are just tame Aurochs (since that's where modern breeds came from), but of course we're talking about the original wild form which our artificial selection had not acted upon.
These Heck cattle are (presumably) the very closest match you can get with what is left.
It would of course be a Holy Grail for the breeders to get (even one) complete Aurochs genome and jump to the original animal in one or few generations.
They'd be too few to form a complete population, but we can offer them these Heck populations to breed within.
they were also scared juslius ceaser. as he described them as big and fearsome, and they woulf not for no man or beast that it espied, and even when taken young, they could not be tamed.
You're right, but these Heck cattle ("reconstructed" Aurochs) just haven't yet been bred enough to match the original size of their wild ancestors (in Germany the cross-breeding efforts to increase their size is still ongoing).
Aurochs bulls were 2 metres (6'7") tall and weighed around 1000 kg, cows were ab. 1,75 metres (5'9") tall weighing 700 kg. These Heck bulls are ab. 1,6 metres (5'3") tall weighing 900 kg and cows 1,4 metres (4'7") tall and weigh 600 kg.
heck cattle so far have only be able to replicate the Aurochs in appearance (still are some visual differences), not behavior [aurochs were known for their foul temperament] and are only about half the size
An extinct wild form of cattle, which lived in Europe and western Asia, and are the ancestor of almost all modern cattle. This is Heck Cattle which are bred to resemble an Aurochs.
LOL what? Aurochs weighed about 1000 kg on average for a bull, while rhinos weigh over 2 tonnes. Your affirmation isn't entirely false, since the Sumatran rhino weighs about 900 kgs and the Black rhino doesn't exceed 1500 kgs. But the White Rhino for instance weighs about 3500 kgs, with a record of 4500 kgs. Even so, the Aurochs is still not the biggest wild cattle. Gaurs males weigh 1500 kgs on average and can sometimes reach 2000 kgs, although rarely.

The younger ones do seem to be rather afraid of the human filming it.
Seems like the mother is more domesticated cow than her young and there actually IS some strain of the fear-DNA in it.
Something all prey-animals have.
The AUROCHS did go extinct, but some of it's DNA might have gotten on to other cows as a side-effect of cross-species-breeding.

Can any one compare the size of an ancient Auroch to an American Bison/Buffalo. Is there THAT much of a difference in DNA or size?

Yeah... They were like as tall as people weren't they? And you would probably need a better fence.

The aurochs or urus (Bos primigenius) was a very large type of cattle that was prevalent in Europe until its extinction in 1627

no, Aurochs were apparently the size of rhinos, if not bigger.
