  • Malorie Blackman and the Noughts and crosses series needs to be more well known...

  • I love Malorie Blackman! I met her in Waterstones and gave her a short story I wrote to read, and she SAID I HAD TALENT!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

  • I fucking hate this woman. She killed Callum. Why couldn't she have killed Jude instead? I can't even read the second book. :@

  • @xPersephonex3 haha, yes :D though by the end of the second book Jude was the only character I liked. xD

  • I wish Callum started whispering in her ear telling her to make an alternative ending to Noughts and Crosses so that he'd still be alive.

  • I really hope Callum was still here! I fell in love with his character. How on earth did I fall in love with a fictional character?

  • @mermaidsh2o Same!!!!!!

  • She should do another book about what Jude got up to while Ryan was in prison

  • @789PartyBoy Ryan wasn't in prison. He was sentenced to life in prison but he died trying to escape.

  • Tobey and Callie need to start whispering in her ear again! This has to be one of my favorite series! I would love a book 5! :D

  • i really hope she writes another book :)

  • Hurry up and make a movie!! and yeah.. stick to the actual written story. Nothing changed, just make the movie!!

  • please make more!

  • Malorie Blackman is my Idol.

    I STILL LOVE YOU CALLUM!!!

  • omg the book was sooo gripping

  • after callum died, i really wanted some really weird twist in knife edge and checkmate where somehow he ended up alive, gets married to sephy and keeps callie rose away from jude, but that's just extremely unrealistic and stupid... thats why i love the way things happened in the books because it's not just some ideal fairy tale, it's so real and i forget it's a book sometimes.

  • @cosmicparade Me too! I loved Callum so much! And the couple of Sephy and Callum, I wish so much Callum hadn't died.

  • MAKE CALLUM COME BACK TO LIFE! IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY THAT HE DOESN'T COME BACK TO LIFE. AAARGHHH!

  • @xmastar9601 Yeah I wish that too, but sometimes I forget it's just a book...

  • I don't understand why you're talking about what "should" have happened? It's just a book... I mean, you either like or don't like what's happening but there is no "should be"

  • This book series is actually too amazing for words. It just blew me away. I <3 Malorie Blackman, she's my insperation.

  • Well i absaloutely loved this series and i agree with mallorie on killing of callum even tho it made me cry :(

  • I loved all four books , even though Noughts And Crosses was my faverouite i disaggree with those who say it was wrong for Callum to be killed as it shows not every book has a happy ever after ending. I'd love to have another book in the series. The only part I dissliked was how was Sephy's relationship status with Sonny and Nathan was sorted as i feel it was slighly rushed and brushed off in Double Cross.

  • Malorie you genius! I never thought that a book would have the ability to reduce me to tears, but the wasteland scene and this book's ending turned me into a garden statue of Niagra Falls.

Would love to know what happens next between Callie and Tobey though...

  • Is tobey a nought or a cross...

  • @Cats1357911 Nought :)

  • @Cats1357911 He's a nought. :)

  • OMG, I can't find the new book here in Montreal ANYWHERE. Pleassssssssssse, make it avaialable in Quebec Libraries!!!!

  • LOVE THESE BOOKS! But Callum shouldn't have died in the first one, such a stupid idea in my opinion.

  • @SongwriterChic But how else would you have moved the story along?

  • @TheZanarkandFayth87 I just wished she had found a different way to carry it on. In some ways, yes I agree that Callum should've died. But in others, I don't. Maybe another character should've died?

  • @SongwriterChic But that's the point, no other death would have been as effective. I believe the only other way for the story to continue was for Callum to die, because that is what then motivates Jude in his actions. And that then, of course, is what leads him to manipulate Callie Rose.

  • @TheZanarkandFayth87 Personally, I would've preferred Sephy's father to have died. I think both of us will fight to the end that our opinions are the correct answer, so how about we agree to disagree? :)

  • @SongwriterChic That's not what I'm doing at all. My world isn't exactly gonna collapse if I'm wrong. Just trying to have a discussion about a book. I always forget the internet is not the place for it.

  • @TheZanarkandFayth87 Well I apologize, that's not what I was insinuating. I was just saying that we should agree on the fact that we feel differently, again I'm talking about the book. Just like you are.

  • @SongwriterChic Indeed. Well then, let's move on!! :) Whose voice do you think would be the most likely to whisper in Malorie's ear?

  • noughts and crosses is one of my favourite books of all time but it think 3 was enough even though i haven't read double cross yet.

  • I can't believe you got the guts to kill the caracter of callum!

You write awesome stories, they seem so true.

  • I'm from Quebec and I read your books in french, I love them!

  • love this book so much although page 135 i just couldn't stop laughing! but it is really good xox

  • i cries at the end of noughts and crosses when im nearly done kinfes edge :P gonna get the rest of the books 4 my bday in 2 weeks yay!

  • She really should write some more in this series. It's a great universe that would be really interesting to explore some more =D

  • this is 1 of my fav book series, totally love tha romance, altho i still love callum! wish he was still here!!!!

  • I love your books Malorie!!

    are the bests!

    Thanks!

  • Malorie Blackman is one of the best writers of all time in my opinion, to just create a completely different world, so similar to ours and yet so different. Callum's death was one of the few chapters in a book to make me really bawl the first time I read it. I so want to meet this woman just to shake the hand of someone so influential and amazing enough and creative enough to write a series of books like this. Thank you so much Malorie Blackman

  • I love Malorie Blackman.

Her books are amazing... proberly just as talented as J.K Rowling

  • Thought she was american xD

  • Im onto ths book now as ive finished the others. I didnt really like the way it kind of jumped from 1800's events in present time to All the gang warfare. O & +'S was the best book i cried so much when callum died :'(. I cant wait for this one to arrive from amazon.

  • Part of me wishes that Malorie Blackman didn't write any sequels to Noughts & Crosses; to me, the story was perfect as it was & it was disappointing to read the sequels, which aren't really as good. However, I do admire her for tackling the issues of terrorism, gang culture & racial division in a sensitive, compulsive way. Keep writing Ms. Blackman!

  • damn wish shed do a 5th book....the cliffhanger really annoyed me...still loved the book tho

  • i read the first book in school in and i loved it so i read all the others thier were amazing

  • god, i love her books, what a talent ;)

  • Nonono.. I really don't like this book.. she should have left it with 1,2 and 3..

  • they're alla amzing. i'm not really a reader but i love these books :) please write another!

  • Oh...I hate this book and I love it at the same time. it's so sad and i can't tell whether it's a sad or happy ending...maybe bittersweet.

  • i love the noughts and crossess series!

    best ever.

callum and jude are my favourites.. :(

    love tobey in double cross.

really really hope she writes more.

  • i read noughts and crosses and at the end i almost cried :( but it was such an amazing book :)

  • this book rules

  • so is ther a movie??? i would love to see it if there is! (^_^)

  • There's barley a bad comment here so everyone agrees theses books are Awesome! :P

  • I just read the first book noughts and crosses today and I have only one word to say...WOW. This book was absouletely amazing. I just couldn't put it down. I was also extremelly emotional during the book. The ending horrified me!

  • i have read all the books from noughts and crosses to double cross and i advice every1 to read it xx

  • seems like a really good book,i love malorie shes such an inspiration, thinking of buying it, was wondering whether the dialogue of gang culture adopts more street vernacular in the book as itgoes on because it would read alot more effective

  • Im confused. So is this the fourth book?

    cos there was

    1- Noughts and crosses

    2 - Knife edge

    3- Checkmate

    ?

  • yeah it is

  • yeah this is the 4th one

    it's awesome :D

  • there are technically 5, and eye for an eye was between 1 & 2 but it's only a novella :)

this is the fourth, double cross :)

  • yup fourth book :)

best book series ever written tbh <3

  • everybody here is such a Tobey fan ^^" my favorite characters were Jasmine and sephy throughout the series, i cant exactly say callum because compared to the other we didn't get to know him as well, but nevertheless he is a beautifully designed character ^^

  • Malorie Blackman is awesome! Such a great author and her 'Noughts and Crosses' sequence of books is amazing - totally different and it's almost as if you can watch it happening in front of you! To be honest, I never actually knew there was a fourth book until now, otherwise I would have read it by now! Is there another book coming out after 'Double Cross'?

  • i finished noughts and crosses yesterday first time i read it! OMG i had never been so depressed in my entire life! when callum was killed i was sobbing!! never never again will i read that AMAZING book!!! way to sad and depressing for me!

  • My life seems to be panning out alot like this book, call me crazy but it iis true, quotes, events not all in order but mosty...

  • omg malorie blackman ROCKS!! ^.^ i'd absolutely loooove it if they made movies based on the books!

  • I dont think she should have involved this book in the series. The noughts and crosses series should have finished with checkmate.

Its a good book but the plot has hardly anything to do with the rest of the books.

  • Exactly what i thought....because Noughts and Crosses started out as just the life stories of Sephy and Callum...but now they're not in the books..it isn't really part of the series.

  • it is, it is moving down the line, sephy is older now and she is still featured and callum is dead so you can't really do much with him...

  • noughts and crosses is the best in the series but double cross is a close second

  • I totally agree

  • so do I

  • what type of book is it?

  • Comment removed

  • she shouldnt do a fith without a very good idea

  • i serously hope that if a film is made it won't be a blockbuster love story it should be inormative and stick to the story. i also hope it isnt a pg chick flic with a slightly deeper meaning.

  • i hope a film isnt made altogether

    its technically immoral

films do take away the purpose of a novel being written in the first place.

novels lack pictures and visual aids for a reason- purpose is for the reader to imagine the whole thing in their mind they way THEY want to.

a film is the COMPLETE opposite- its completely visualised. theres NO room 4imagination.

films take away the purpose of a novel being written altogether. plus it wrecks many ppls imagination + can really upset readers

  • maybe so, but if they DID make a film adaption maybe more people would appreciate the books, and i really hope Malorie Blackman continues with the series they are the only books I have read cover to cover (and all that in the middle!)

  • She really is amazeing, I'm so glad she didnt give up when she kept getting rejection letters, or else we would never have been able to read her wonderful work. I love her books, though Noughts and crosses is definetly my favoriet

  • i just finished the 2nd book i don't really understand why they write not for younger readers. Its kind of weird but i borrowed it from the school library.

  • she's pretty awesome :)

  • Read all 3 and trying to find 4th

  • im on double cross. awesome book so far.

  • Love the books and if this is the new book then heeey I'm getting it!

  • I am on the second book, and I have just got to the bit with Callum's mean letter, I felt so sad reading it, I couldn't bear it, it was just so sad!

  • i love malorie blackman, bloody genius (:

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH i am reading the second one and now i how callie dies noooo!! well that sucks these books are so sad!

  • Callie Rose doesn't die...

  • I Love the Noughts and Crosses series

    she's such a good writer

do hope it's made into a film

  • i like the fact that callum died, it's way more realistic. i mean if he would have survived i would hate the books. it would be fake and horrible. it makes you think more about how much she [persephone] must miss him and how bad she must feel as she was partly responsible for his death. it's sweet how he chose his baby over himself, though.

  • how is it more realistic?-that she chose the baby over her 19 year old love?

although i know why sephy made that choice-i also know many ppl out there wud refuse to have a baby over their lover's death.

ie- some husbands, if they find out their wife is pregnant with a baby that cud cause harm to her life, wud immediately tell their wifes not to have it.

why wud his survival have been fake and horrible?

  • Double Cross is the best book yet!

  • If the Noughts and Crosses books do not get made into films soon, I'll call the Film companies Racist... (THIS IS A JOKE)

But seriously, If shit like "Harry Potter", What contained about 0.7% of an original thought, got made into film Isn't it logical that something 10000% more awesome than it should also be made into a film?

    Who else agrees with me?

  • i do :)

  • i DO. :)

  • Yes I know what you mean!!!

  • totally agree. but... if movies do get made for this i just hope good people are picked.

  • i disagree. films take away the purpose of novels being written altogether.

1)the purpose of a great novel is for the reader to imagine everything in their mind.

2)malorie blackman did not put any visuals in her books cuz she wanted the reader to hear the characters speak and see them move in their imaginations. great novels demand a spiritual and mindful connection from readers.

3)a film is heavily visualised- theres no mindful connection+everything is already visualised for u

  • I hated the thought of Callum dying i wish he didnt die...yeah me too, Knife Edge is quite boring for me...i love all her books

  • Ahaha she's so cool =p especially when she's like "I've been writing for 18 years =D" ahahaha she's so cute =p and I WANT HER ACCENT!! :'(

  • I Know... Knifes Edge Is So Damn Boring ... And When Jude Beats Up Cara Its Sooooo Sad

  • It isnt just Calum its about the racism that comes with being half and half. I would recomend reading it, seriously. Dont let the death of Callum put you off.

  • I Dont Feel Like Reading Kinfes Edge Because She Killed Callum!

He's The Main Thing In The Story!

  • omg thats exactly how i felt but i read it anyways it was really good and checkmate was you wont regret that you read it:]

  • wait i was really confused in checkmate is tobey a cross or a naught? because i was guessing he was a naught but now i dnt kno

  • Tobey's a nought, Callie Rose is a half nought half Cross

  • naught

  • ive read up till checkmate but i thought that was the last one

  • i luv ur books Malorie !

Keep it up, I'm on Checkmate now :)

  • PLEASE RIGHT MORE MALORIE!!!

I think you should right more DAN, Tobey's friend. I really wanted to know whether he gets caught by the police yet.

  • argh had 2 stop it she was guna reveal the story line

i luv her short stories the most

    writ some more

  • yh same :)

  • just finished this today,

For me this only comes second to noughts and crosses.

  • Out Of All The Books I Like The First One

    Ox.

  • Hmmm....

I wasn't too keen on this one. I didn't have enough emotional attachment to Tobey.

    But I enjoyed it thoroughly.

  • i wanna see what noughts and crosses would be like in film, not musical though, and knife edge, and checkmate, and of course double cross!!:D

  • I TOTALLY AGREE!!!

i haven't read all of them yet, i've only just finished moughts and crosses and i'm DYING to read knife's edge!!!

    :)

  • I've finished all of them now :)

  • Noo, I hope they never make Noughts & Crosses into a film. They'd slaughter it!

  • Yeah, you have a point about slaughtering the book, but i would like to see what it looked like though:)

  • It was an AMAZING book! I loved the whople series, this one was jsut so so shocking and emotional. I cried too, it was beautifully written.

If I ever had the chance to get fictional characters into real life, tobey would be def on my list :P

I just wish the story would never end :(

  • :o :o :o callie dies??

  • no, she gets shot.. but she servives :)

  • Its an AMAZING book,

got it on christmas day, read all day boxing day and Id finished by midnight

Your right, sephy is really minor in this book

and she almosts seems bad, because she bans tobey from his house etc.

  • BUt you gotta look at it from her point of view as a mother.. to her, he's the reason she gets shot, and then she sees him with Rebecca which is really weird for her, like 'you got my daughter shot and you don't even care' sorta thing;.. so of course she's gonna ban him

  • I'm just over half way of the book and really enjoying it, it is weird though how Sephy is quite a minor character in this book, when your so used to Sephy and callie-rose telling the story.

  • lol its my life time goal to make noughts and crosses into a musical!!

  • such a beautiful book

    finished it last night

    cried for an hour :)

    i soo advise the series

  • I can't wait to read this book!! I must say, I didn't like the others near as much as Naughts and Crosses. They were awesome of course. I just didn't feel the same love for Sephy that I had for Callum. The last two were all about Jude to me. He broke my heart. The first shows how strong love is and the next two show how powerful hatred can be!

Also, has anyone ever listened to Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. I cry when I hear it, because it's the perfect theme to Naughts and Crosses. Check it out!

  • its out already i saw it in whsmiths today

  • i got it for christmas, finished it in a day, is an amazing book, i couldnt put it down.

  • hey i havent read double cross yet. i'm waiting for my copy to be posted to me from waterstones. i'm so curious to who sephy chose at the end of the last book. it left us at a cliffhanger! please tell me who it was!!!!

  • :)

    aw

    yeah so true

but the link between callie and tobey was really something special, and yeah,

listen to ocean avenue by yellowcard,

PERFECT theme for the first book :)

  • I've read Double Cross and it's a really good book. It seems quite different to the other three books in the series though. I suppose that's cause it focuses more on gang violence than racism, unlike the other book. I don't understand why it's called Double Cross though.

  • that is so damn true thats why i love this book so much.

double cross means to deceive someone who thinks they are working with them.

that's what Tobey did to Mcauley. Tobey was a double croosser.

  • yh i understood the double cross thing. i think there are all amazing books.

  • yeah :]

its funny how like, you feel like you have this little link with sephy, knowing all her life before and stuff :)

  • Ah I didn't realise that either. Quite a clever title really when you think about it.

  • Wow, I really didn't expect another book! Checkmate ended so well and dramatically that it felt like a really strong conclusion to the series. I'm going out to buy this today!

  • i didnt think there woudl be another book to, i thought it was a triology, but am still glad there was another book. at the end of checkmate, i was left guessing how Callie Rose and Sephy picked.

  • i hated that callum died, i thought to myself whats going to happen, i thought he was the main character. i fell in lkove with noughts and crosses. i really didnt think he was going to die. i just got paat the bit in knifes edge when sephy joins the band and had read the hurtful letter from callum. it has lingured in my mind for a long long long time (: I think malorie is an amazing writer, all i would like now is a film to come out. x

  • wow callie rose gets a boyfriend :) Im only on the second one at the moment. its sooooo amazing. the book doublecross sounds realy amazing.x

  • it is.

  • i havent read the rest of the books yet...onli read noughts and crossed n hated the ending..didnt want callum to die

  • Read the rest, it'll all make sense. :)

  • Yeah this is my second favorite too :)

It goes: Noughts and Crosses, Double Cross, Checkmate and Knife edge :)

    :D:D

And seriously, it was like reading callum and sephy again x)

And yeah I cried at the end, ut the first I cried for 3 hours non stop HAHA how sad?

  • that how i put the order of the books

  • I LOVED Knife Edge but my friend thought that bit was boring. When Jude beat up Cara i thought i was gonna cry :'(

  • Yeah that's my order ffor the books too

I found Knife Edge really boring.. but when Jude hit Cara I got really scared of him =O but I also felt bad for him.. but in Checkmate, when he comes to Callie Rose and makes her hate her family, I HATED HIM SO MUCH =@ I was happy that he died.. but Jasmine :( I really liked her towards the end

  • oh yeah and i 4got to say that this is probs the best one since the first

  • just finished it and lurrrved it! was amazing but i so hope theres another... i just cant think for the life of me what it'd be about

  • let another character whisper into her ear...plz...

  • I totally love this book

The first one Noughts and crosse literally made me cry when Callum died at the end

From then on all of the books in the Noughts and Crosses sequence has gripped me

I mean when i found out that Double cross was comming out on Malorie Blackmans webiste i was going crazy

Let me just say that this book does not let down the sequence of Noughts and Crosses

And i hope the Molire has another whisper in her hear from a character in the book

To make people like me happy

  • this is strange

i read the 1st book wen i was 15- it upset me but i didnt cry

four years later- now a month ago a discussion broke out about the ending which i got caught in. and as soon as it was over- everything i remembered of the trilogy came flooding back to me.

and that was wen Callum's death hit me.

i was so restless, cried for days, felt so absorbed, and cudnt stop thinking about him. even though i hadnt read the book in so many years.

  • love dis book, so shocked how things turned out but love it anyway. espcially da end part.

Tobey is my second fave character, Callum is best!!!LOL

YOU AND ME BABE, AGAINST THE WORLD!!!lol

How can you not love this book and Malorie Blackman 4 them!

  • that you and me babe, against the world makes me cry, but i loved the ending when callie did it back to him.

  • yeah :)

    made me cry too

    such an awesome book,

    at the end,

it felt like, theres no point going on

if i was toby, .. yeah

hes so lucky, callies great :D

  • "you and me babe, against the world" - that really got stuck in my head when i read it LOL

  • Callum is the best

tobeys nice- but he aint Callum

besides Tobeys lucky compared to Callum. They're both similar ppl but such opposite endings.

Callum did bad things with the LM but Tobey did bad things too with McAuley.

However- Tobey gets to have a good long life, whereas Callum was hanged at 19. Tobey's lucky in his time, things have changed slightly. If only Callum got the chances Tobey gets.

  • i wish oh wish callum was alive but then the story wouldn't be wot it is but i want him to see callie i want spehy and callum

  • I really enjoyed the book. It was really gripping and kept me reading really late into the night. I particularily thought that the part where McAubly asked Tobey to shoot Dan was so well written and omigodish. Loved it :D

  • Why was it terrible?

What did you want to happen?

I love this book as well as the others, and for soem reason i want another book :D

  • It took me about five hours to read - I loved it! I did want more of Callie and Tobey in it though... whilst the middle part was interesting I really couldn't wait for more Callie/Tobey

I didn't actually cry for this book through (excpet tears of joy at the end) Normally throughout these books I'm crying from start to finish lol!

  • I loved this book. I read it in two hours.

No affense but the ending was terrible.

    to me at least.

  • It was a bit abrupt in my opinion, but I thought it was quite good.
