We've got an old Peter Wright that would like to visit the moon. Currently, we consolidated our reloading with 452AA, but have others available, some dating back to the 60's. This would be a fun draw to our neighbors who also own weapons and would not be terrified to the sound of gunpowder.
I knew that was a breechblock from my Navy days, interrupted thread gave it away. You need a metal detector to find the anvil after it embeds itself in the earth.
We use a WWII Navy 8-inch gun breechblock for our launcher-it already had a 5-inch diameter hole in it where we put the powder, and a grease hole coming in from the side where we put the fuse.
I can see it now... the captain of an invading force says to a lieutenant- "What in the hell are they shooting at us?" L- "Anvils sir!" C- "Anvils?" L-"Yes sir, Anvils, like Acme anvils from the Wile E. Coyote cartoons sir!" C- "Good god, we've invaded the Warner Brothers Studios grounds..." -Captain palm slaps his forehead -
Is there any concern that unseen fractures might develop in the anvil from the repeated explosions it undergoes, and that it then might crack or shatter and produce some shrapnel during a later launch?
No, if you look close we've welded a 1/2 in. thick mild steel plate to the underside of the anvil, covering the entire high-pressure area of the laucher, and more. If the plate is somehow damaged it can be replaced.
have you ever thought of tying a parachute to your anvil so that it doesn't sink so deep into the ground?
of course, you would only want to do that on a day with little or no wind... you wouldn't want a gust of wind to drift anything that heavy towards you or your house.
after i posted i realized that the parachute would open on the way up and bring the anvil down prematurely.
i hadn't even considered trying to get the anvil to land close to the launcher. it's probably just as well that i don't have a spare anvil... i'd be trying to land it as far away as possible. :)
It began as competition between local blacksmiths, as I understand it. Search for anvil shooting on u tube and you will see a lot more, and some experts such as the one-eyed man in Mississippi (or Alabama?)
They were shooting them in Scotland in the early 1900s. Probably before that.
Just think. If you put a bunch of guys from anywhere any time together, add whisky, anvils and gunpowder and a touch of boredom. How long will it take them to blow something up?
I was watching this other guys video and the people standing around watching were all shocked and amazed that the anvil was going an amazing 4 sometimes 5 feet in the air...if ya can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch is what i say...good job and PLEASE.....be careful!

going by an estimated hang time of about 10 seconds you are getting that thing around 800 feet high... not bad
rip3000gt 2 years ago
Hmmm, one of our tables must be off. When we timed it we got 11 sec. and the book showed that was about 500 feet.??
cannonmn 2 years ago
@cannonmn The math is trivial. This would be for 11 second flight time.
(0.5)(9.8)(5.5^2) = 148.2 meters = 486.3 foot high shot.
Max velocity in feet per second is 3 times the square root of 2*9.8*148.225. Or 161 feet per second, AKA ~110mph.
I think 800 feet high guy was just guessing (poorly).
