"Hide it So Deep"...great tune...thanks for posting this! I've been meaning to buy this DVD. I bought the vinyl when it first came out and eventually bought the remastered CD. I wish this band would have had more longevity.
I had the opportunity to see Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen in Austin a few weeks ago, if you can believe it, Chris sings better now than ever. Manassas was a brilliant concept, and if you got to see them live (I did in 1972) you were very lucky.
One of the best country songs I have ever heard, by one of my favorite groups of all time. Once again Al Perkins is the KING of Steel. The so-called Country music of today sucks dead donkey dicks at midnight. Long live true country, with all it's passion, sincerity, and beauty. Thanks, Stephen!
I saw the Burritos in Englnd a coupla few decades ago. The fiddler was having horrendous feedback problems so Sneeky took over his part as well as playing the steel to full capacity. Was really impressed...realy, really impressed
@nightjasmine25 It's because these were honest and unassuming songs by Mr. Stills going up against contrived, bloated Eagle songs that went down like a Big Mac and fries. Plus, Atlantic was angling to get Stills back with CSN&Y, where the big money was.
they're just effing brilliant; just got * Pieces *, and still ask myself why didn't they hit the big time; agree most likely of course for all the reasons evoked by paulOcby, but then the Eagles, with some exception, were a bore
I just picked up the History of the Flying Burrito Brothers. I don't agree that pedal steel was a mistake. Hillmane used Jay Dee Maness again with the Desert Rose Band to great success.
I've never heard anyone in the bands say so, but the pedal steel guitar players defined the Byrds, Manassas, Desert Rose Band, Flying Burrito Brothers. God Bless Sneaky Pete!
Hillman knew the impact of the steel playing ,The Eagles did too and they intentionally didnt hire a pedal-steel player so as to not put off fans,Hillman says in "TheTrueStoryOfTheFlyingBurritoBros." that The Eagles avoided all the mistakes of FBB and Manassas and in order to be crowd pleasers
Rusty Young, of course. Although steel was not his strong point. I wouldn't put him in the league of JayDee Maness, Jerry Byrd (who didn't play pedal), Sneeky Pete, but that's not a put-down.
@AmBotanischenGarten - The Byrds really only used pedal steel on "Sweetheart of the Rodeo." I think that it was McGuinn's Rickenbacker 12 string that defined their sound.
It's a 1958 Gretsch White Falcon ... Gretsch made a Stephen Stills edition '58 white falcon which has an aged white color, and has his name inlayed between the 18th & 21st fret.
i never thought of manassas as being short on guitar-power! they had instrumental-brilliance coming from all round the band and i don't think they would have been improved by--for example--stills/young-style guitar-dueling. surely chris was there mainly for his vocal and song-writing skills. when guitar-playing was called for i think stills had it covered. love this band anyway..!
I saw Stephen at Sheffield, UK about two weeks ago. He surpassed my wildest expectations by being phemonally exciting, edgy and unpredictable. His voice, and the way he approached his singing was, in my opinion, the best I have heard over his many years of recording and playing. He even looked much better now in his 60s than he did ni his 40s!
I agree with you I met him twice this year and fell in love with him againLOL like this song says what can I say. He is stills so beautiful and age hasn't taken it's toll yet. I will love him forever and no matter what he looks like he will always be my Angel.
Search "I am Dallas Taylor" and send a hello to the great percussionist. He's just posted a few things recently, and it would be nice if we all said hi.
You know I do believe Stephen's jacket here is the one that he won off Chris Hillman in a poker game...the very one that Pamela Des Barres made especially for Chris! I'm gonna email this video to Miss Pamela and ask her!
I really used to LOVE the way Stephen dressed! From Navajo-inspired ponchos to big fur coats that looked like they were cut from a Grizzly bear hide to beautiful cowboy jackets with delicate ornate designs stitched across the shoulders to his signature cowboy hats he was STYLIN' in those days-looked GOOD enough to EAT!
Manassas seems so underrated? It seems like anyone I bring their name up to has never heard of them, and they were such a musical powerhouse. Stephen Stills is amazing, and that White Falcon sounds great, and yes Dallas Taylor is awesome as well, I thought he was awesome with CSN&Y, but I guess they didn't think so...wonder where he is now?
Dallas went through a brave and ultimately successful battle with drug and alcohol addiction-he's clean now-and for some years has been serving as a mentor for AA and other dependency organizations' members who are struggling with their personal addictions. He was one of Chris Farley's main mentors and had been trying to convince Chris' family and friends to commit him for full, round the clock care for fear that if they DIDN'T Chris would die soon. Sadly, Dallas was RIGHT.
Agreed to all of the comments. And one of the greatest and most unsung drummers ever on the kit....the marvelous Dallas Taylor. What a musician. What an inspiration. Dallas could play anything. Thanks Dallas.
I thought Dallas was great too. I read his book and thought it was very good. I sent him an e-mail and he graciously responded to all my questions. I wish he would've been invited to play with CSN again.
Yeah, drummers like Dallas play from the heart. Too many guys today have a way too cold and sterile(i.e. BORING) style and they all sound the same. Dallas,Bonham,Moon,Watts,Ringo,Baker,Mitchell,Bill Ward,Nick Mason etc..... Each one of 'em had their own feel and brought so much to their respective bands.
I saw this band at grand valley state college outside of grand rapids mich, it is still one of the best concerts I every saw - way ahead of their time.
This and 8 other tunes are available on DVD "Stephen Stills and Manassas Live " available on ebay or in Walmarts etc.I recomend it to any fan of this genre.
Hey ToadMitch, if you're still around... I'm sad to see you removed some nice Manassas songs from YouTube. Any chance to put back some of them. I'd be happy to see The Treasure here again. Thanks and regards.
A lot ot the so called "super bands" of the 60's and 70's were total flops, fighting egos and creative head butting. Stephen Stills mastered the "super band" with Manasas. IMHO, there has never been a band of such "heavy" talent that was so dang good. Awsome video, and a lot of memories. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful pedal steel guitar from Al Perkins (Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons). What a great band Manssas was, even Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stone would have left the Rolling Stones to join Mansassas.
I saw Manassas during its brief time together. They had a magnificent stage show and presence, as well as a great sound, songwriting, etc. I don't think Stills intendend for it to be a longtime band, which make what they did even more awesome. Although Perkins is competent, J.D.M. and S. Pete were much more creative. Hillman has certainly stood the test of time, however, from joining the Byrds without actually knowing how to play bass, to were he is now.
@AmBotanischenGarten - I think that Stills did "intend" to be more professional and commercial with this band and to have it last. However, he grew bored in the end and they all got into the drugs, groupie scene, etc.... Stephen is a good southern Baptist at heart.
"Although Perkins is competent, J.D.M. and S. Pete were much more creative."
Al Perkins is quite a bit more than "competent" Ask any steel player .
He was Still's secret weapon , so much of the Manassas sound was driven by his steel guitar , and his lead electric guitar as well .

No need to put down the Eagles. There's room for both. But it baffles me why Manassas didn't get as much radio airplay back then when the Eagles did.
I'm sure Atlantic had good PR people as much as Asylum. Even better.
