I think this is an example of him being best mates with Vaughan Williams. It seems to be very sea shanty-folk songy, a genre that seems, for me, to hold him back from establishing his own credentials.
I like them both anyway, but for me Holst's orchestration, as per The planets, is brilliant. I also thought The Planets rocked even on two pianos!
Whenever I listen to this, I find the harmonies haunting, contrapuntal, and not what is to be expected from a folk song collection. But that's a good thing. I love this piece. Thank you for posting.
