Oh! Good memmories! I love this video as well as your other Horseshoe Curve videos. Hoooaah for SD80MAC's! You're lucky, when I was there (2003), all the trains I saw were downhill / eastbounds including a sweet triple meet!
From what i heard is that NS is using their 80MAC's on local coal trains in the Cresson area. Their abusing their power and using SD70M-2s and C40-9Ws to do their work. I think NS should give their SD80MACs to CSX. They'll use them for better work
The HorseShoe Curve is the east/west main line and is near the top of the Allegheny mountains in western PA. It's located about 6 miles from Altoona, PA. The uphill grade up the Allegheny mountains is 91' per mile. BNS owns the east/west main line now.
I live in southern NJ and work In the glass industry (30 years in all). Part of My job is unloading raw-material from rail-cars (25 rail-cars per week) most of all soda-ash. Soda-ash comes from mines in Wyoming. All the soda-ash going to glass factorys in the NE passes through the Horse Shoe Curve going east bound on that East-West main-line. IN the mid 1990's most of the soda-ash was loaded in PLCX and ACFX cars.
What I was trying to do is see if those cars I was focusing on was empty since they was going west bound and and see if they was unloaded at the glass factory I work at. Then when I got back to work I would check a log book for rail-car's numbers to see if those cars was onloded at our plant, none was from our plant.
For our Glass Plant there is always 30 loaded soda-ash cars on the rails in the pipe-line at all times going east bound. If I saw those same cars going east bound loaded then I would check rail-cars tracking reports at work to see if any of those cars was ours heading to NJ.
the best damn locomotive Ever built , not like the nasty old Uboats and the C40's, , i miss running them Monsters , they always took a while to load up but once they pulled you where gone

I'm not sure on how to get to the Curve from there. If you know how to get to Scranton, PA. Basically, you go to 81S, to 80W, then 99S.

Sounds like the helpers are doing more of the work than the SD80's. It's sounds like the whole train was going to stop.

You must like PCLX covered hoppers alot! You zoomed in on every car! You did this in your other vid too. I'm the same way with RailBox box cars ;)
The wrecked tank car and the Conrail Bay window caboose add a nice touch.
