I still visit Hollywood every year. I have siblings that never moved away. My younger brother's band "The Wondermints" has been touring with Brian Wilson for many years.

Does Hollywood Boulevard ever get real quite, I mean hardly anyone around?

Automobile traffic is there throughout the day and night but about one third as much between Midnight and 6AM. Very busy between 9AM to 9PM. Foot traffic is very light after Midnight. Most businesses close about ten PM. Bus service is not good after 11PM. Thanks.

Yes it is very real. There is tar still bubbling up to the surface. It is near Wilshire and LaBrea. It is worth seeing. They have some statues of mammohs and other animals trapped in the tar.

Hollywood Blvd. between LaBrea and Vine should be relatively safe at night especially for a group. I would not recommend all of Hollywood's side streets after dark. Thanks.

Yes, it's safe. Hollywood Blvd might be bright at night, but when running into side streets it's dark. If carrying a handheld camera make sure to keep an eye out for muggers if any. Once they run into a side street, it's gone :( Last time i went, a person was following my bro for a while since he had a camera. I told my dad and he stood behind us to 'protect' us and so the guy left.. Pretty safe.

In 1983 when I last lived nearby it was about $400 per month for an apartment. One bedroom in a nice area. Today I would guess about $1200 for the same place.

Interesting that you first walked Hollywood Boulevard in 1956. How old were you in 1956 (I was 5 years old) Did you see the Hollywood hotel?

I do not remember seeing it. It is very possible I did see it because I did see The Chinese Theatre in 1956. I was 17 when I first arrived in LA back in 1956.

Nice piece Featureman.There are still some great buildings on the Boulevard from its glorious past. However two stunning buildings have long gone. The Hollywood Hotel which was on the site of the Hollywood & Highland complex (demolished in 1956)and the Garden Court Apartments(demolished 1982) two blocks west of the Chinese Theatre.

Yes. I remember the Garden Court Apartment Building. I think they did some movies and TV shows there. I believe Marilyn Monroe and Shelly Winters lived there at one time. I highly recommend Johnny Crawford's The Resurrection of Bronco Billy if you can find it. It was nominated for an Oscar. A short film with Hollywood Boulevard featured. Thanks. I first walked on Hollywood Boulevard in 1956.

Our family (and me) used to live right below that Hollywood sign, for about a year, back in 1950. Then we saddled up, and headed back to Texas.

Hollywood was great in the 1950s. It was OK in the '60s and it lost a lot of its charm over the years. The Brown Derby is gone, of course. So is the ABC Radio building and the occasional movie star on the boulevard. You must have bought records at Wallich's Music City at Sunset and Vine. Plus there was Tiny Naylor's Drive in at Sunset and LaBrea. All gone now.
