My pappy done inherited a soup bone what came down from his father. They used that soup bone for all kind a things you understand see? It could be used at Christmas. It could also be used at Thanksgiving. At the supper table we'd all pray the Our Father which art in heaven and thank the Lord up above for that soup bone. You can tell hard times is comin' because when you go down to the store to buy yourself a new soup bone they ain't none there. Hard times is here again.
@Joody This is Lighting Hopkins for sure. It doesn't have Mississippi John Hurt's characteristic bass line, and nobody rambles more than Sam Lightning.
@Joody Lightnin all over, licks, style and most prominently his voice. Listen to some of the interviews with Lightnin, and you'll hear. There are some recordings I get Howlin Wolf and Leadbelly mixed up, and boy is that a mess.
Lightnin' loved people. Saw him many times between 1966-70, mostly in LA but the best was at a community center gig he played in Houston, where he loved. His music will always live. Blues is truth.
@bruceg4747 I'm so jealous of you. I'm 20 yrs old and unfortunately no one plays the blues like Lightnin'... Would've loved to see him in person play....
Sometimes it's hard to say "I saw him/her blah blah" because it sounds like I did and you can't. I know that's not going on here. I'd be jealous too. BUT I think it's fantastic that you love Lightnin' and recognize his talent and contribution. Try to see any folks who are still around today and you'll one day say the same thing. Even back then, my friends and I realized that many of these blues masters wouldn't be around too long so we were indeed fortunate to see them.
@springrobin How would he have done more? He's just one guitarist and he covered both the riff and a bit of Cropper's lead. He couldn't add the organ part, too.
Hi, I didn't make that reply.. though I've been here all the time :S could someone have hacked into my youtube account? What else might they have hacked into :O
Green Onions was released in 1962. Lightnin' played till his death in 1982, which gave him 20 years to play it if he wished. He only did it once on this recording in homage to the new sound the blues had created called soul of which BT&MGs were masters shown by their many recordings with other soul artists. He did a reversal of what Clapton did with Johnson as a show of respect for his fellow musicians.Who's stupid now Tystick and OlivaMunn ?
Ah! so this is where Booker T. & The MG's got the song "Green Onions" from. I can hear the same lick that Steve Cropper does on their version in a cruder form.
I'm So glad there is still people in this world that appreciate this great man, I'm sooo Glad and i'm aglad I dunno what to do. I'm just glad. lightin respect and also for them other fellas down there in the delta and not just for the texas blues off course.
My favorite part about listening to old live performances is being able to hear the artist chat with the audience. Jimi Hendrix and the Doors have some good exchanges with their audiences.

You know I find myself rockin' out to this again this morning. God it's soooo good. The thing is just his ability to jam. I mean I could listen to this a hundred times and try to play this exactly - note for note, but it just wouldn't sound THAT good. When he played though, he probably never played it the same way twice.
