Personally I believe it it will stick to help replace desktop as a whole - yes, including all in one models - and tablets will take the stage in terms of portable devices.
I really wonder how something like this would hold up in college? Hm... I need to get a computer this summer before I go... We'll see. I still have no idea what I'm going to end up getting.
Comments like "oh it's just another Air" are just plain stupid. Intel Ultrabook is just like ThinkPad X1. X1 is like Asus Zenbook. Zenbook is like Macbook Air. Macbook Air is just like every other previously produced subnotebook, it's just companies didn't give fancy names to them before. Technology goes forward, things get smaller, it's not that Apple magically broke some barrier, isn't that obvious?
in my opinion, picking between an apple product or a windows product or even an android product is all based off of how the person's mind works logically. personally, i cannot use an apple product because i just cant get the hang of it. android/windows is just instant for me. apples products are confusing. some people think the opposite. some other people think that the aesthetics of the product trumps performance and compromises and adapts. Price is also a factor.
its funny how he talks about boot up times...its called an ssd bro...my computer has 3 of them in raid 0, boots in like 2 sec, from the floating orbs to the startup sound. :D
wow instead of going forward they're going backwards... RIP steve jobs you were the only one in silicon valley that understood how to evolve humanity.
the definition of 'ultra-book' is already becoming blurred with vendors releasing 14" and 15" ultra book models at CES weighing 4.5-5lbs with prices topping $1200. The term is in danger of being watered down to mean any notebook high performance in a 'small' package. Unless they can beat the Air on price, weight, and battery, it seems pointless to me.
@Fubikon I know! I love how apple makes something popular, and then all the other tech companies come out with almost identical products. This was the case for the ipod, iphone, ipad, and now it seems this will be the case for the macbook air as well. I wonder when a company besides apple will market a novel, original idea.
@pgeske actually the iphone was only half appples idea there had been around 5 touch screen phones from various high end companies first with simplest apps like calculator and such. apple just made the touch screen phone affordable and added a wider variety of apps.same for the ipad windows had various companies that had touch screen laptops and tablets that had the power of a laptop and were heavier apple just made it lighter and more affordable as well i do like apple but i know better
funny thing is that apple was the first doing this with the macbook air and all the windows fanboys where saying that was trash and now with the ultrabooks with windows are on the market they r gonna love the faster ssd drives and the battery time and STILL say macbook air is trash.
@ILikeWeatherGuy This is probably sarcastic but just in case it isnt, i would say a large number of people. They are cheaper than USB storage for Operating system install disks, and there is a huge number of people who prefer to have DVD's as opposed to digital copies of media.
The question of whether one gets a mac or not, really depends on whether one prefers the Mac OS X operating system, I wouldn't say that Macs are that much better, but until Linux is improved, Mac OS X may not be the most advanced operating system, yet it's still arguably the best. There's just so much software written for Macs that hasn't been written for some of the linux and unix distributions (:
Like I said, it's the same people that will say they don't see suffering anywhere that buy "just" apple, and don't diversify. Sure get a mac, if that's what you want, but realize there are other mp3 players, other phones, anyway I'm just saying, get all the apple stuff you want, just realize why you did it..
Hey, if you want a pc ultrabook, get an ultrabook, if you want a Macbook Air that's fine. I don't understand why there's an argument, let's face it. Apple hasn't "invented" all that much. If you want to attribute the Ultrabook to apple you're gonna be disappointed. I'm one who questions apple's credibility, at times, I think people are blinded to reality at how a company that seems so beautiful, and I truly mean that, has effectively perpetrated slavery while people happily use their products.
Poor windows. Copy in vain. iPad was priced at 500 so what happens? Motorola, Samsung, Toshiba, and HTC price their tablets at 500. Mac Air is priced at 1000 so ultrabooks are priced at 1000. WTF, You only pay a premium price for premium products.

I would prefer a mac book air, but if you want windows, just install it on the mac, mac designs are sweet, and durable, so yeah. These are the competitors trying to compete with macs air book line, which idk the out come, because people love windows so they would like this product, if they knew how to install windows on a mac then yeah they'll get that. hopefully this will pack a gigantic punch. because windows pcs, usally pack a lot more power for a smaller buck.

@movania89, I agree with what you said. The Macbook Air performs very well. I'm sure the 2012 line will be even better. I have been a PC user for over 10 years. Just bought my 1st Mac. It just works. Bottom line!
@Profoundsoup Huh?? the Mac Air starts at $1,100. These Ultra book Mac ripoffs the same price. It's called, paying more for better made products. That's how it works. It applies to everything and not just computers. Nuff said.

ultra books nice looking.. from my personal prospective... I want a laptop which can be mobile but still game... i have a macbook pro 17in for the dedicated GPU. Only thing smaller atm with dedicated that i'd consider buying is the 15 in. I want power in my computer. and then if i had the cash perhaps a device in between my iPhone and macbook desktop replacement. Choices are tablet.. or make macbook pro smaller .. slim 15/17 pro dedicated GPU seems the way to go... if it can be done reasonably
The Ultrabooks have *much* better resolution than the Macbook Airs. The ASUS one with the i5 has 1600x900. However, the iOS is MUCH lighter than Windows. That's one of the biggest issues to-date.
That's the only problem with Windows is all the fucking DLLs and shit. If Microsoft would "Simplify" their OS and make a lighter version for download, rather than being forced to use the largest installation, it would run iOS into the ground. Of course, they *really* need to work on their security.
@Gmicrosh Hacking isn't illegal. In fact, people have jobs specifically meant to hack into the company's website, and find exploits. What you are thinking of is Piracy probably. Distributing the software for free is.
Maybe they're a bit overrated for what they are, but it is a big deal. Hopefully, if these get popular enough, some of the more popular features (SSD, instant on, ultra thin design, low energy, moderate power processors, etc) will fall upon netbooks, making a true ultra portable device.
@J4K3ST3RisH3R3 That is true. I saw someone who took the LED backlight and made it display in a fucking rainbow! That thing was so rad. Here's a link: 27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ludnaxO41Z1qlsiq8o1_500
Unfortunately, I've boycotted Apple. Hey, it's not that I'm an MS or Linux fanboy, it's more or less how they work and operate. I don't really like Windows too much, and Linux has a lot of things to be desired.
I think the Ultrabook are going to do really good considering the speed and price, it's much cheaper than a MacBook Air with the same specs. But i have a feeling when they are released there are going to be some flaws with it.
@TheDelSol I stand corrected; because Apple has not changed their iOS (besides putting some small nuances) and has not really been up to date with the hardware of certain devices (mostly the iPhone), Apple will have to step off the throne, and maybe Microsoft will release products and come to the top.
@TheJonoSel If Ultrabooks cost at least $900, mind as well purchase a MacBook Air because the OS is much easier for consumers to use and the hardware of Apple products is famous for being well-built. That's one of the reasons why Apple today is like the IBM of 1984.
macs:unopen os, high price range, uncoustomiseable, not powerful in some cases, really only useful for music editing and video editing, controlled by apple 1000%
pc's: open os, affordable price range, customiseable, you can build your own, higher proformance for less of a price, gaming, useful for photo, video, editing, graphics design, basically your own computer no matter what
@WAFFELTIME Not if you install a Linux distro or Windows on it. Macs don't sit on the throne as all powerful, but they (Depending on the model) are more than capable. Install Windows, Ubuntu, Fedora, BEOS, whatever. "Problem" solved.
@CrazyChainsawFilms True they didn't but id say they did invent the concept of an Ultrabook. There was nothing like the Macbook Air and still hasn't been until these things come out.
I actually witnessed someone drop an ultra book, needless to say it did not come back on. When you purchase small electronics you get what you pay for.
In all honesty, the Ultrabook concept will be a total waste of time and money. Consumers already have a mental image in their heads that Apple has a better laptop out there when it comes to thin devices because Apple is known for creating such a simple OS and superb built quality. These PC companies are absolute dumbasses for thinking that they have a shot against the number one electronics company in the world.
@4zachpark ah yes the "#1 Electronics company" that confused backspace and delete, also macs are overpriced and here is proof static.centernetworks(dot)com/dell-apple.jpg and if Microsoft made hardware it would mesh just as well as mac os on an apple computer. Your opinion is just that an opinion. And PCs are more versatile, any program/mod/tweak you want. So i have my solid argument while you have a bunch of opinions. ~TheJonoSel
@98Flynn I doubt that it's all "They couldn't make it" as much as it was "It would cost consumers a but load of money and alot to produce". No market if you can't make the money.
@98Flynn Apple didn't invent laptops obviously but they did come out with the Mac Air several years ago. It's basically an extremely thin laptop. These "ultra books" are a blatant ripoff of the Mac Air design in almost every aspect. It's sad to see such great PC makers as Asus and Samsung get so lazy with their laptop designs that they just went and copied Apple's thinnest laptop in the world.
The problem is that their form factors are too similar to the MacBook Air, they're trying too hard to imitate rather than come up with their own design
RIP OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apple works their asses of to make genius products, many sleepless nights, then asus & co.
comes and rips off their idea.. aperantly apple has stopped the production of the "zenbook"
and i got a feeling that apple is gone shut down more rip of products.

1:12 i thought hacking was illegal, how come there's an ultrabook for it ?
Gmicrosh 1 month ago in playlist CES 2012
@Gmicrosh Hacking isn't illegal. In fact, people have jobs specifically meant to hack into the company's website, and find exploits. What you are thinking of is Piracy probably. Distributing the software for free is.

Maybe they're a bit overrated for what they are, but it is a big deal. Hopefully, if these get popular enough, some of the more popular features (SSD, instant on, ultra thin design, low energy, moderate power processors, etc) will fall upon netbooks, making a true ultra portable device.
The only thing missing now is a touch screen
JusticeFreedomDestin 1 month ago
@JusticeFreedomDestin There was an touchscreen Ultrabook shown at C.E.S. Was very thin and had ten point multi-touch. Pretty damn good!

I think they will stay around for awhile. Maybe they can compete with the MacBook air.

I will admit, i love apple products... i have a 17" macbook pro and... guess what the first thing i did to it was?
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate to it...
The only reason i bought a mac for $2700 vs. a PC which is the same ting but only $800...
BECAUSE THE MAC IS SEXY!
J4K3ST3RisH3R3 1 month ago
@J4K3ST3RisH3R3 That is true. I saw someone who took the LED backlight and made it display in a fucking rainbow! That thing was so rad. Here's a link: 27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ludnaxO41Z1qlsiq8o1_500
Unfortunately, I've boycotted Apple. Hey, it's not that I'm an MS or Linux fanboy, it's more or less how they work and operate. I don't really like Windows too much, and Linux has a lot of things to be desired.
infamus15 1 month ago in playlist CES 2012
I think the Ultrabook are going to do really good considering the speed and price, it's much cheaper than a MacBook Air with the same specs. But i have a feeling when they are released there are going to be some flaws with it.
guyaneseDJ13 1 month ago
@TheDelSol I stand corrected; because Apple has not changed their iOS (besides putting some small nuances) and has not really been up to date with the hardware of certain devices (mostly the iPhone), Apple will have to step off the throne, and maybe Microsoft will release products and come to the top.

Mac Book Airs are not THAT affordable...but these look like a nice substitute, especially ASUS, they have a nice track record.
mranthonymcneil85 1 month ago
@TheJonoSel If Ultrabooks cost at least $900, mind as well purchase a MacBook Air because the OS is much easier for consumers to use and the hardware of Apple products is famous for being well-built. That's one of the reasons why Apple today is like the IBM of 1984.
4zachpark 1 month ago
@4zachpark IBM of 1984. So you're saying that Apple's a dinosaur that's about to die?

with Windows 8 touch screen, I think Ultrabooks will really shine at $1000, paired with your windows 8 mobile and Xbox w/kinect.

macs:unopen os, high price range, uncoustomiseable, not powerful in some cases, really only useful for music editing and video editing, controlled by apple 1000%
pc's: open os, affordable price range, customiseable, you can build your own, higher proformance for less of a price, gaming, useful for photo, video, editing, graphics design, basically your own computer no matter what
WAFFELTIME 1 month ago
@WAFFELTIME Not if you install a Linux distro or Windows on it. Macs don't sit on the throne as all powerful, but they (Depending on the model) are more than capable. Install Windows, Ubuntu, Fedora, BEOS, whatever. "Problem" solved.

@CrazyChainsawFilms True they didn't but id say they did invent the concept of an Ultrabook. There was nothing like the Macbook Air and still hasn't been until these things come out.

I actually witnessed someone drop an ultra book, needless to say it did not come back on. When you purchase small electronics you get what you pay for.
equa727 1 month ago
People seem to be forgetting the benefits of competition. Bring on these Ultrabooks.
Caseyp789 1 month ago
In all honesty, the Ultrabook concept will be a total waste of time and money. Consumers already have a mental image in their heads that Apple has a better laptop out there when it comes to thin devices because Apple is known for creating such a simple OS and superb built quality. These PC companies are absolute dumbasses for thinking that they have a shot against the number one electronics company in the world.
4zachpark 1 month ago

Titanz91 1 month ago in playlist CES 2012
@98Flynn Apple didn't invent laptops obviously but they did come out with the Mac Air several years ago. It's basically an extremely thin laptop. These "ultra books" are a blatant ripoff of the Mac Air design in almost every aspect. It's sad to see such great PC makers as Asus and Samsung get so lazy with their laptop designs that they just went and copied Apple's thinnest laptop in the world.
