Excellent performance. Beautiful sound and musicality. Who cares about a few "chips" and "cracks" in their playing. Remember they play a very heavy schedule touring all over the world. Not easy. Remember that they are human not machines.
Very nice. This is excellent music. Keep in mind this is a live performance and not a doctored up studio recording with sound engineers. Anyone that can play the piccolo trumpet or a "D" trumpet well can fully apprciate this performance. The player on the right is Jens Lindemann, who is one of the finest trumpet players in the world today. Before you judge, try playing half the stuff these guys play and you will find you are not a worthy judge at all.
of course can´t an instrument sound good if the player is terrible! but with american trumpets you can´t reach the sound like you can on german trumpets!
that are german trumpets, this trumpets are just built in germany, switzerland and austria I think and in my opinion the sound of this instruments is the greatest of the world!
Welldone chaps. Those German rotary valve trumpets are a right pain in the backside to play. I play baroque trumpet in an Austrian Orchestra and its great to hear quintets that are in time and in tume! You guys are inspirational
for anyone that is criticizing the canadian brass for a few cracks here and there, please remember that this was most likely in the middle of a strenuous concert, I am a university trumpet performance major, and since you do not know what they played before this piece in the concert, you are in no position to judge their performance.
@kahl22 : you're absolutely right ;), and that's so an evidence they played a lot before, cause they really are like world known trumpeters but i think it's really interresting to hear them play like that ( with that kinda unclear sound, lot of wind and all that...) when you know them and know they're way better than what we hear here. :P
@kahl22 firstly, were all allowed to have opinions, and secondly in an industry where you have so many great performers and ensembles one cant help but get irritated by some irregularities. Youtube will always house positive ans well as negative comments, youve had a good 5 years or so to come to terms with that, so if you havent already i would get a move on with that if i were you.
The very small errors you heard are called "cacks". They are something that every single brass player in the world experiences. This ensemble (Canadian Brass) is world renowned. They are absolutely phenomenal. Take it from me, a university brass student, the Purcell Sonata for Trumpet is a very difficult piece. They played it phenomenally, and you need to consider how challenging a work is before you direct a very ignorant post towards such phenomenal professionals.
I'm not trying to be negative towards you, but you should keep in mind that these gentlemen are professionals and are very talented. I can assure you (having met the one who cacked more: Jens Lindemann) that they would not forget to oil their valves. They just messed up a little. We all do.
If you can't play this piece well with a normal trumpet, then use a piccolo, like ALL the trumpet players, and don't try to act like a super-hero.
It has no sense, I know they are wonderful players, many times better than me, but FOR THIS I can't understand these errors...a professional player can't do "valutation errors" like this.
Sorry for my bad english, but I am not english :P
Well, I have purchased several of their CDs and I have heard many of their recordings they are a tremendous group, and you must realize that this is a live performance. I would recommend thinking before posting. The overall quality and tone of the piece was not diminished by a few mistakes here and there. People are human.
You do realise that playing a Piccolo trumpet does not make it any easier to play higher? It just makes it easier to differentiate between high notes.
I am a trumpet player, please don't try to teach me the difference between a Bb trumpet and a Bb piccolo...
The trumpet is an instrument, the piccolo is another instrument...if you want to play it good, you can't play it like it's a normal trumpet.
And if you want to play really AGILE on high notes, it's VERY simplier with the piccolo, and some pieces are impossible with the normal trumpet...if you want to show me that I am wrong you can post a video where you play.
This is precisely what 84Zacknafein84 says - that one can be more agile on a piccolo trumpet, i.e. can differentiate between high notes more easily. He does not say that it is easier to play higher.
However, this does not detract from it being a great piece musically and skilfully played.
I've only gotten to play on a rotary trumpet once, good German engineering... Well this one was, I don't know much about where the rotary got started... or even the pistons...
Great style to play this piece, such a shame that the sound quality is not a little better.
I also like Purcell. It's so nice to play sonata's but quite hard to keep the proper beat.
Miss one and you're lost ;-) I've been playing the trumpet for 20 years, but I have to postpone it right now, because of my buisy life combining University with a job...Such a pity really.
It is great to see Ryan Anthony doing so well, he has always been a good showman and a gentleman! I remember performing the 2nd Brandenburg, field shows, concert and marching band way back ..... 87' MMH Alumni Cello/T-bone
I'm from austria, where mainly rotary trumpets are used, but not because easyer to play fast parts. (just look at "green hornet" - that's played on a perinet)
They are used because of their special sound. and of course there are differences in the way of playing rotary/perinet.
Oh, me, too. My father used to play Purcell recordings when I was a little girl! Sure wish I knew the titles of the pieces. I'll know the music when I hear it.
I just saw these guys today at the Cerritos Center. What a wonderful show they put on. I didn't have high expectations about the new guys, but boy was I wrong.
One or two cracks in the beginning? What about the rest of the performance? Just simply amazing. My full respect to the Canadian Brass players.

Since they're made in Germany, there better? They probably make the world of difference, however, it's the performer, not the instrument.
