it s clear for me you have a lot o experience. i hope you will make more educative videos about how to fix a electron tube radio receiver. all the best :)
@AllAmericanFiveRadio I have been collecting tube radios for over 40 years but would NEVER have dreamed on working on them till now. As a beginer, you have a real good "radios for dummies". I still don't get about 10% but you do a great job. Thanks
That really came out good! That seems like a really complicated repair job on the grille cloth. Seems strange though that there is no volume control, is this maybe so people wouldn't turn down the volume all the way but leave the power on and run out the batteries?
This radio has been a real challenge. This is the first time that I had a radio with the grille cloth glued to the front board, and glued and nailed two boards on top of the grille cloth. What a pain. The temple was the only way I could figure out how to make the new cloth look good on the first try. This is also the first radio that I can remember that did not have a volume control. And it's so weird that it has a tone control.
Good vid, but you stole my thunder. Oh well, you snooze, you lose.
Now that the ole Airline is finally good to go, I should have enough time to begin replacing the speaker cloth on my Silvertone console and post a vid about it. I'll be attempting a different method. Hopefully, it'll work. Stay tuned.
How about a radio alignment vid...from how to attach the sig gen to the final coil adjustment?
Departement store radios, silvertone and airline (especially airline) have always seemd well made to me. Unfortunately their design is sometimes quite lackluster. I have an Airline 62-325 that looks great and is well made, but it is really dangerous to operate! It has 5 tubes - but one is a ballast, so it has no IF amplifier. The ballast gets burning hot. You can't even touch the top of the radio. It's a wonder the bakelite case didn't deteriorate from such high heat.
Heat is always a problem and sometimes the manufacture put the tubes very close together concentrating the heat further. Just like today, they tried everything. Sometimes it was a good idea and sometimes a really bad idea.
The heat will drive out the oils from the bakelite so I use a Wax cleaner that puts the oils back in.
wow that started right up, makes me wonder what you could do for my tube amp. so are you gonna make this radio so the owner just has to plug it in the wall and no battery eliminator
I bought a magnavox extension speaker awhile back. This is the one that has 2 full range speakers in one small cabinet ( about the size of a boombox ) I remember the grille clothes were wrinkled badly ( as a lot of stereo consoles do as they age) They only used glue. I think it would have worked better if they used glue and staples.
Yes, staples would help and also a high quality grille cloth is important. I used the best I could find, and bought the cloth from Grillecloth Headquarters.

Hey John,
Well, I'm an honest theft.
I am really glad that the Airline is repaired and that you are now happy with it. And I did consult the Digital Fun Meter.
Each radio presents unique problems that require different solutions. I think that is why I like this hobby, each radio is different.
Best regards,
Rick

Oh good! Westinghouse radios are good collectable items. I know I have one Westinghouse, might have another. And Thanks.
I thing the owner is going to use something like tung oil or watco oil. This will make it look much better but it will still look old.

Two volt tubes heat up fast. The owner is going to buy an ARBE III battery eliminator.
AllAmericanFiveRadio 3 years ago
nice can you have the owner put up a video on here of the finished radio playing some music
coondogtheman1234 3 years ago
I will certainly ask him and be glad to make a video for them.

ok thanks

It was as if the radio has instant on.

This radio has tubes with a filament of 2 volt. And that cause the filament to heat up to operation very quickly.
