You are right there is no verse in the Quran stating women must wear a headscarf to cover all the hair, but the prophet's wives did cover so both of you are right. According to the Quran the "dress of piety" is best. Modesty is the key. Do what is easy for you.

for muslim women (muslimah), her hair is aurat. so, one of the solution to fulfill this order is wearing hijab. at malaysia, muslimah wear 'tudung'. at afghan, they wear burqa.

Confuse tradition with religion? Subhana'Allah... Insha'Allah, should you have the chance, check out Surah an-Nur (surah 24), ayah 31. It is the adaab of a Muslim that he (or she) speaks with 'ilm (or knowledge), rather than to speak for the sake of speaking.

As salaamu alaykum---It DOES matter, as hijab is a commandment in the Qur'an, and as muslims we believe/know the Qur'an to be the speech of Allah (azzawajall). I am a muslim woman, and the fact that these muslimahs wear hijab is actually a part of what made me take them more seriously, insha'Allah. For a woman to obey Allah (azzawajall) by wearing hijab is lovely, considering we are living a society that wants to uncover a woman, rather than preserve her modesty!
