  • is a gold star clifton 105 a decent pipe ????

  • @368money Honestly, I don't know.

  • My grandfather passed away and left me a collection of six very nice and expensive pipes, he quit smoking so they have not been used in years. Do you recommend a certain method for cleaning and priming them for reuse?

  • Unless they're filthy, just some liquor and pipe cleaners should do the trick. You might want to ream the bowl out first as well.

  • Thank you, I just recently switched from Cigars to Pipe Tobacco and this was very helpful thank you very much.

  • total pole smoker. "as if we were squeezing a mans hand..." ha.

  • Joffre the giant great video

  • Oh you fancy huh?

  • Good advice. Enjoyed the video. I have subscribed. I love bowties and have abeard too. Perhpas you would like to return the favour.

    Alan.,

  • you must have many leather-bound books and your apartment must smell of rich mohogany.

  • You sir are a gentleman and a scholar, great vid, very informative

  • I smoked a pipe on occasion for some years. I never considered myself a smoker as I didn't smoke but rarely. I much prefer a pipe. The smoke is cool to start and you must be careful not to smoke too fast in order to keep the burn from getting too hot. Letting the pipe rest too much will result in a soggy or wet smoke that becomes unpleasant. The main difference between a pipe and other kinds of tobacco is the control and variance in the smoke as well as the effect of the pipe on the smoke.

  • wow pipe culture seems pretty goddamn suave to me.

  • You Sir, you are a legend of gargantuan proportions

  • You Sir, are a legend of gargantuan proportions. May you and your cherry pipe be prosperous :)

  • you sir are the classiest mother fucker i've ever seen. Good day.

  • You look very distinguished in this video Sir.

  • I have tried cigarettes and cigars, but never a pipe. How are they different? What is the flavor like? Are they difficult to smoke? Thank you.

  • Hahahahaahhhahaaha what a gentleman this guy is

  • he would smoke a pipe XD

  • Are you a professor? You look like one.

  • Bow ties are cool!!!!

  • now i know what pipe cleaners are acctually for :D

  • @silverchairbookstore thanks :)

  • @silverchairbookstore Ah right, I see. Tha

  • is tabbacco I grew in my backyard good for beginers?

  • Do you have to buy specific tobacco or can you just use the same as you use in roll ups?

  • @LiveGrenade19 Roll-up cigarette tobacco was recently relabeled "pipe tobacco" to avoid taxes. It is not pipe tobacco. Ask your local tobacconist, or buy something out of a jar or tin.

  • @silverchairbookstore The real difference is the cut.. Pipe tobacco is a bit thicker and rolled tobacco is a bit thinner so it is rolled easier..

  • I want to be you when I'm old... really freakin' badly.

  • I just bought my first pipe for $3 at the Rez in Basom, NY, so it's not exactly 'up to par,' I suppose, with the exquisite piece in this video. Either way, I wanted to say thank you for posting this, and illustrating the proper way to smoke pipe tobacco. Kudos, sir.

  • @TheMegaRon Thank you, glad you enjoyed watching. If you get into it, check out my other channel, joffrethegiant.

  • that there. That will be my retirement passion.

  • in your wifes defense it didn't actually hit me until you told the pipe cleaner story. i felt stupid...

  • damn man just get to the fukin point

  • @cyrax023

Don't inhale pipes. Well it's your call but you should smoke it like a cigar and enjoy the flavor.

  • do you want to draw the smoke into your lungs or just in your mouth (like a cigar)?

  • I like your bow tie

  • Im going to raise my kids to be like you. smart, classy, well dressed, and a true gent. wish my dad did the same.

  • @Prophint Cheers, thanks! (This is silverchairbookstore)

  • yea ama use this technique to smoke "tabacco" :))

  • A fine introduction. Many thanks.

  • i just never really put two and two together about the pipe cleaners!

  • What is the difference between a cigarette store pipe and a tobacco nest pipe?

  • I just got a cheap pipe.It seems to be made from plastic and the top (where the tabaco goes) is made from metal.Do you think fumes will be a problem? It doesnt seem that the metal would get so hot to melt the plastic.

  • Do you really need a pipe cleaner? can you use something else? ^^

  • "I like the way the bent stems kinda sit on my bearded chin." TRIWINNING.

  • How do you light it? Do you light it on fire, or just smolder it, or what?

  • "as i was taught by my forefathers"

  • My dream is to be married to a hansom pipe smoker like you in the future. I really like your style and you seem to know what you are doing.

  • I have black cavendish! :D

  • optimus prime eh

    we meet again

  • @2pac765ify Wow, what a rebel. Just calm down. If you're smoking dope because you think it's cool and desperately want to fit in with your friends, then you've got the wrong end of the stick. Stop trying to be a showoff and shut the fuck up. Get some fucking humility. Smoke dope, fine, but don't be a showoff about it. The word "poser" comes to mind.

  • lol. i bet pipes arent the only thing that sit on his bearded chin... what a boss

  • I have to ask, can a pipe like this be used with cannabis as well as tobacco?

  • @MrMrStratocaster No, really bad idea. It does some really nasty things to the briar and just generally ruins it. I've also heard that it can gum up the stem, although I'm not too sure about that. Just get a weed pipe, it'll be easier.

  • This guy looks so fuckin cool! I want to do that now

  • Optimus Prime just adds to your cool points. You would be welcome to smoke with me anytime. lol

  • you had me with optimus

  • what is some tobacco that you would suggest thats smooth but has a little flavor to it to someone who is just buying their first pipe?

  • thanks for the info! :-)

  • You have an awesome beard.... I'm sorry, I just HAD to say that.

  • 99p store =)

  • It's healthier. Smoke it like a cigar, never inhale.

  • Outstanding video! Very well done.

  • is smoking a pipe as bad for you a cigs? Do you inhale pipe smoke or just smoke it like a cigar or what?

  • Be the way, as a beginner, is it okay to inhale? To get more Nicotine? Or no?

  • One last thing. As a new smoker, here is my cleaning regime - gently scrape out bow with the spoon on the tool, not removing any of the cake already in place. Shake out the ashes and run pipe cleaner from mouthpiece into bowl. Then take paper towel and roll up, push into bowl and wipe out as much of the carbon/ash that will come out. Then wipe off outside and stem with a wipe using either briar pipe wipe, or Renassiance wax. Any comments or corrections suggested?

  • Hi,

Enjoyed your video. I am a new lady pipe smoker. After admiring for years, I"ve finally at age 49 said to heck with what people think and jumped in. By the way, my hubbie looks just like you and is a librarian and historian. Any suggestions for getting him to join in my hobby? He has a big sweet tooth as well. Have wonderful memories of a shop that sold Dover books and pipe tobacco. Books were infused with the wonderful aroma that lasted for months.

  • I bought one of those lighters that doesn't have a flame. Like an element lighter is that cheating or should I not use it?

  • @davis1000000

use whatever is convenient for you, just be carefull not to char the rim of the bowl.

  • It would have been nice if you hade positioned the camera to actually see what it is you are doing.

  • Reasonable video quality, too dark and needs some lighting. Reasonable instructions on packing which I would like to see expanded for beginners: i.e. a new pipe is never fully filled, perhaps quarter filled and smoked right to the bottom to build up the cake (carbon deposit) in the bottom of the bowl. But perhaps that's beyond the scope of the video. Love the beard and the bow tie.

  • I thought you were Brian Blessed on the little thumbnail. :(

  • I don't smoke cigarettes anymore, just the occasional bowl of tobacco. Much nicer, more pleasant, and cheaper. I get nice tobaccos from the local tobacconist that is cheaper than even the cheap stuff from the drugstore.

  • may i just say: you are exactly how i'd like to be when i get older. i just got my first pipe, a Dimonte Ultimo, and i love it almost more than cigars!

  • @jameshoward1349 Thanks so much! Cheers!

  • @silverchairbookstore My dear Sir, i have a question. When you smoke pipe, do you have to inalate the smoke of tabacco or not? And, is it as unhelphty like traditional cigar or not?

  • @silverchairbookstore My dear Sir, i have a question. When you smoke pipe, do you have to inalate the smoke of tobacco or not? And, is it as unhelpful like traditional cigar or not?

  • This man is fantastic! I just got my first pipe, and i'm loving it. Thanks to this video i know how to actually utilize it correctly. I used to have asthma but it went away and it doesn't seem to be bothering my lungs which i suppose is good.

  • cigarettes take over ur fucking soul. ive seen it my mom smokes. every 5 minutes she has to smoke a god damn cigarette no matter what the occasion. pipe isnt as bad.

  • headin to the smoke shop tomorrow for my first pipe =)

  • great video! i enjoyed it but mabye better lighting =)

  • My wife said she would leave me if I bought a pipe...I went to New York City to 5th ave. and bought a hundred dollar pipe and some real nice tobacco and Im better off without her..I love my pipe...

  • @JPBeausoleil81 way to go. Get ridda the bitch and love your pipe

  • @JPBeausoleil81 What a stupid reason to leave someone! If she's that petty and controlling, you really are better off without her! (-married female smoker)

  • @JPBeausoleil81

Good job man don't let someone else tell you how to live your life.

  • I have to say I used to smoke a pipe when I was younger but didn't know how to enjoy it,

due to your video I think I may visit my local tobacconist and pick up a pipe and some tobacco and indulge, thank you very much for your video i may just make a video response if i get time hope your well

  • I enjoy watching this video many times over & I was lucky to come across it when I was first starting pipe smoking & had absolutely no clue what I was doing. My favorite line from this video: 2:12 "They're delicious!" That makes me want to light a pipe right then & there!

  • Hi, I'm new to pipe smoking and am enjoying different types of baccy in a corncob.

To keep my pipe alight from start to finish, I find I have to keep breathing air in and out quickly but softly through the pipe. If I don't breath through it for more than 10-15 seconds I have to relight it.

Is this normal or does it mean I'm packing wrong?

  • Tobacco nest, I like that.

  • tobacco is such a amazing substance, cigarettes are horrible and do the tabacco plant no justice, pipe tabacco and cigars are were you will find the tabacco people fell inlove with..great video man, simple and informitive for the new pipe smoker.I should check out your books based on your fine taste in tabacco lol

  • I would recommend $40-$50 for your first pipe - briar.

  • nice boe tie

  • Good video and you seem to know what you're talking about. I have never smoked a cigarette in my life due to health issues (bad lungs) but am considering getting a pipe. Does pipe smoking cause much damage to the lungs? Any other health risks involved?

  • @craigjsm I would definitely talk to a physician. One doesn't inhale with pipes the way one does with cigarettes, but I can't imagine that pipes would be good for someone with "bad lungs".

  • @silverchairbookstore Thanks. I have to admit my desire to smoke a pipe has more to do with looking like an intellectual than anything else. And "bad lungs" is the medical term, I believe ;)

  • @silverchairbookstore nice video i like your style im more of a cannabis smoker tho when i use a pipe even though im 16 its healther than tabacco but tabacco feels better when you inhale but marijuana dont make me cough no more.. but anyways hears one tip i can give you if your using a lighter. if you dont happen to have your pipe tool on you or you dont like bringing it along you can use the corrner of the bottom of the lighter to even things up

  • @craigjsm Definitely not! Smoking is always harmful! It is generally less harmful for lungs to smoke pipe instead of cigaretes but you still inhale a lot of nicotine and other toxicants from tabacco. People will tell you that smoking pipe is almost safe but that is rather their wish than a scientifically based fact. The truth is that no study has concluded that smoking pipe would be significantly healthier than cigaretes. Only that the risks are a little different but they are still there!

  • @craigjsm Smoking is generally hamful whether pipe or cigarettes. However if you decide to smoke pipe occasionally i dont believe you do much damage to your health. Todays popular anti-smoking attitudes are based on biased data and political correctness that is really aming to attack individual freedom. Smoking DOES NOT CAUSE any diseases, it only increases the risk of getting them! Whether the risk is high or not it must be compared to other factors like diatery habits but its very difficult..

  • @craigjsm same as cigarette

  • May I ask, after you light your pipe and start smoking, how long does it last and untill it lights out or whatever it does. Because I like to smoke a pipe rather than a cigarette. Your help will be most appreciatted.

Nice video as well, Cherrio :)

  • @Britishguy18 Depends on how big the bowl is, and on the tobacco. And on how much you fill the bowl. A full bowl will last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour plus.

  • @Rozyonnie Tobacco that's not flavored (like any English blend) is nowhere near as bad for you as cigarettes.

As for the feminine aspect of things, there a couple of lady smokers on YouTube!

  • @Rozyonnie But oh so delightful in the meantime...

  • Thanks for the info, I'll be going to invest some money in the Belgian pipes :) Untill now I've smokes only cigares or cigarellos (Belgian) So I really would try smoking a pipe. Any suggestions for some quality brand of pipes or tabacco ?

  • @vlasselaer Dunhill is nice, so is Peterson. If you're on ebay, pick up a new Hackert from the U.S. or a Mario Grandi (although those can be a little too big) from Italy.

  • can you define "puffing" i didn't get it, do you inheal anything while puffing?

  • @Dinosaurmannen Usually not. You can "retrohale", that is, bring back out through your nose. You still get nicotine through your mouth.

  • do inhale while puffing??

  • @KOEI24444 Not really/occasionally. You still get nicotine through the mouth membranes.

  • @silverchairbookstore thanks for the info

  • can you use any tobacco? like just shag tobbaco you would use for rolled cigarettes example golden virginia or amber leaf.

  • @cianw10 That would work, but not as well, the cut is too fine. And you're missing out on the joys of cake tobacco!!

  • Optimus Prime ftw!!. Also i have a question if anyone could answer it. Should I bother buying a pipe that isn't carbonized or does it really matter if I clean frequently enough?

  • @Submariner21 Just keep it clean, you'll be good. Ream very seldom, you want a nice cake build-up.

  • thank you very much for the video. this is an art that has seem quite a decline

  • Thanks for this video. I bought a pipe yesterday & gave it a try but could only keep it lit a few seconds. I will give your method a try later today.

  • man i bought a little clay pipe to start. If i were to shake a mands hand with that, it be in peices- how you shake a hand is how you show you'r character. lol

  • "squeezing a mans hand" lol

  • which is more dangerous? pipes or cigarette?

  • @ay1796 Well, cigarettes are easier to abuse, and they have additives, but tobacco is tobacco.

  • uhh are you Jewish ?

  • very nice

  • I'd smoke a bowl with you anyday!

  • "..holding a childs hand"

  • why does it matter if you use matches or a lighter? wouldnt a lighter be easier?

  • Thanks for this, I plan to get into pipe smoking soon.

  • do you have to wear a bowtie when smoking?

  • @mikecelone yes. it is a prerequisite. lol

  • are they like cigars where you dont draw in to your lungs? or do you draw in?

also pipes seem to go out a lot... is this common?.. and relighting all the time.

  • whats the lowest price to buy a pipe that isnt rubbish?

  • lol dude your freakin awesome

  • why must one use matches? i would think the sulfur and chemicals used in matches would impart some undesired flavors. (sorry, never smoked a pipe, but am interested)

  • @eyepatchinc Some matches are worse than others. Ideally wood matches with phosphorus heads. And it's considered by most to be better than the residue of lighters. Some people only use lit tapers.

  • @eyepatchinc One might think so, however, it has been in my experience that the tobacco tastes much better when using a match vs. a lighter. Not really sure why...

  • @eyepatchinc if you go a cigar shop or tobacconist then they'll have matches specifially for smoking that will unaffect the test or effect.

  • @eyepatchinc Hey man, When you use a lighter the heat is too much for the tobacco and it burns the flavor out and it will burn faster, When you use a match the flame is not as hot or fast burning

  • I'm not one who smokes or drinks - ever! - but I really want to learn how to smoke a pipe, get one, and just be able to smoke it every now and then without getting hooked. It's mainly an aesthetic thing, or to 'get in the mood' of reading old books. Is this mega weird? I'm a girl by the way. I sort of imagine a Kerewin Holmes from The Bone People kind of situation. Pipes are brilliant. ANd they smell far better than cigarettes.

  • @barefootfiona would you marry me fiona? anyway..if you won't marry me...consider a good cup of homeground cofee made in a french press, some ginger cookies, and the old book.

  • Hello. Thanks for the video. I used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day. I'm now a cigar smoker but no more than 2 or 3 a month and sometimes less. I've expensive taste in cigars however. It's an occasional hobby, but an expensive one. I've just smoked a pipe for the first time. I'm not sure I done it right as I couldn't get much of the smoke in my mouth(not to mention it took ages to light). I don't intend to smoke my pipe any more than once a week so it may take me a long time to get the hang of it.

  • Ha, I got a pipe because I thought it would be funny. Smoking is bad for you no matter how much you do it, so I'm only going to smoke my pipe for comedic effect and for special occasions

  • smoking affects health !! don't smoke !

  • everything affects your health, good or bad, dipshit. its their choice to smoke or not, lay off

  • Are pipe screens necessary? If so, how to you use one?

  • Wow, I never knew pipecleaners were for cleaning pipes either. Shame.

  • I recently bought a little Dr Grabow briar pipe, and its pretty nice, works for a newbie. I've been smoking home-grown tobacco, and its actually not bad.

And I didn't get the whole pipe cleaner thing either, lol. Thanks for the tips

  • mmMMMmmmindeed

  • i like dutch style black

  • I know this sounds silly - but that's a wonderful Bow Tie you have on. Great tie. I take you very seriously, and I thank you a million times for this video.

  • got myself a peterson off my dad, can't wait to try it out

  • Where can you buy a pipe?

  • Great video! More lighting and closeups would help. Question- do you have to finish the tobacco in the pipe each time or can you let it go out and smoke it again? Also, how often do you clean it and how?

  • Excellent!!!

  • How long can a pipe be used for before it is bad? I only ask b/c some pipes are rather expensive and if their life is short then I assume the majority of their price is felt in their aesthetics and art.

  • A pipe that is well cleaned and maintained (not difficult to do) has a practically unlimited shelf life. A century ago crabby old men took pride in never cleaning their pipes; those pipes soured.

  • that burning sensation on my tongue when i smoke is tongue bite from smoking to quickly correct?

  • Yes. Although the effect is exacerbated by aromatics (which I bet you're smoking). Aromatics are anything with a flavor casing, such as cherry, rum, vanilla, etc.

  • Mostly it is from the casing or the flavor that is added. Many tobaccos, mostly english style etc. will not burn or bite the tongue.

  • @only1tylerdurden correct

  • @only1tylerdurden

Another way to stop is to make sure you're doing only long draws, not the quick, short puffs.

It's normal for the pipe bowl to feel warm, but if it feels very warm or even hot, it's time to set it down.

The bite comes from the tobacco being TOO hot.

  • I compared the difference between using my zippo and matches and it turns out that there's a bit of a difference between the two. I'm now using matches when it's not windy. I know you don't mention it in your video, but I got a pipe pouch and it came with a "moistener pod". Do you have any idea what that's supposed to be used for? I'm assuming it goes in the pipe pouch to, obviously, moisten the tobacco. But I'm not sure if it goes directly in with the tobacco or not.

  • I wouldn't use it if I were you. Just keep your tobacco sealed, and don't put more in a pouch than you would smoke in a week.

  • Ha! On my first day smoking a pipe, my girlfriend said "I didn't know you could use pipe cleaners to clean a pipe...wait a minute..."

  • Hilarious!

  • is the pipe stronger than cigs ??

  • Flavor-wise it certainly is, although there's a wide variety from light aromatics to heavy English and Balkan blends.

As far as nicotine goes, maybe, but there's usually no inhaling.

  • I actually have a question now that I think about it. Occasionally I used my zippo lighter instead of matches to light my pipe. (Because honestly, using my lighter is easier) Does it make much of a differences using a lighter instead of matches?

  • Thanks for the great feedback!

A lot of people say using a lighter affects the flavor of the cigar. I haven't really found that to be true of your Bic-type lighter. But a butane lighter, or even a Zippo, might affect flavor.

I nearly always light with a lighter when I'm out of doors.

  • @silverchairbookstore i have a quistion

is the pipe stronger than cigs like heavier ?

  • About 3 months ago, two friends and I decided to start up pipe smoking. I must say that this is the most informational video that I've seen. I learned everything from this surprisingly. When my friends and I finally started to smoke, they were amazed about how much I knew even though I hadn't smoked before. So thanks a lot and I hope you make some more videos in the future! (And I must say, your tips about packing a pipe are astounding, it always works perfectly for me)

  • It's for flavour only. No filter + pipe tobacco has similar potency to cigar tobacco.

  • I heard that it isn't good to inhale the smoke while using a pipe. Why?

  • becuase of the pipe demons u dnt want them in ur lungs

  • what are pipe demons.
