I heard a really good interview with Brandon about this new album of his. Brandon: "We we're going to have world beats and crazy synths..and we were going to make this eclectic, but very attainable pop music. I couldn't force that to happen, so the songs that kept coming out of me were more meat and potatoes American rock." Host: "But that's got to be some validification as well that this guy we're hearing is you, that's what you end up writing even when your left to your own devices."
I thought the whole album was really good. He didn't stray too far from The Killers sounds but he did toy with it, especially with the country elements. People can slag him and The Killers all they want but I'm glad each album is unique.
The track is pretty good but the entire LP is not good at all in my opinion. I thought it was really bland and not listenable in many spots. As a pretty big fan of The Killers I'm really disappointed in Brandon.
Almost reminds me a bit of Keane on his own album, I'll probably stick to The Killers though. Like you said, it is a bit over produced and it's not for me.
cmooon...you gave this piece of shit a 7? a interpol's "lights" got a 5?really? oh well.i guess i dont get your taste...funnily enough, i enjoy watching your reviews though.
@misty666 Well, don't expect to get anything other than just another point of view. You've already seen the video, and I thought I explained why I liked the song pretty clearly. I mean, there is that side of me that enjoys the fancy-ass Americana rock. I think there's some great songwriting going on here, for real--which the new Interpol was desperately lacking, in my opinion.
@musicinducedeuphoria Eh, it's OK. I'm not head over heels for U2. :-P However, I can't deny a lotta tracks on Joshua. U2's new stuff is OK, but their old stuff was def a unique voice in the 80's mainstream, standing in opposition to hair metal, synth pop, and all that jazz.
I have been following these reviews for a while now.. nice to see love for the killers (and goddamn.. for the new order too) respect your opinios.. keep up the good work
@theneedledrop No no no, c'mon they were experimental art students. Your right though I should have been more specific, KILL ALL MODERN MAINSTREAM POP, START WITH THE KILLERS. ARE WE HUMAN? OR ARE WE DANCERS......FML. I don't think you should review people like 'Brandon' again, your better than that.
I think it is ok...Personally I think nothing can ever hold a Candle to the first Killers album but I can pop on anything else by them and enjoy it....and thanks for flashing your copy of Joshua Tree :D lol
I'm a huge ass The Killers fan, they are probably my favorite band. Obviously I was super excited as I heard he was doing a solo album but the single is a real disappointment for me. Too oldschool, too easy, way too "poppy" at least for my taste. I feel like The Killers managed to often write songs that are mainstream but still preserve a lot of artistic quality to it which this is lacking imo. A Killers song is usually a lot more complex than it seems.
i found it really dull, didn't do anything for me, i actually thought the the vocal hook was alittle annoying, dunno, not really my sorta think anyway
I always think it's so silly when someone goes solo just to sound exactly like their band does...usually the solo stuff is a bit more dance-y, but that's about it. Makes me think the solo stuff were band rejects...
@antihax91 i personally dont think it sounds THAT much like the killers. I mean obviously there are similarities, but thats to be expected since he's the frontman of the band. It's a lot simpler/cleaner and mainstreamy anthemy than the killers... Also i hear a lot more of a country influence as opposed to some of the 80s/synth pop influences in much of the killers music. plus the killers lyrics are MUCH better imo
so the lyrics are stupid/cliche/cheesy, the structure of the song is the same as other 5 billion songs, unoriginal, the instrumentation is boring and the song is good? I don't get it.
@IamYourEvilOne It's just a style of music I enjoy. It's basically like a safehouse for me. It's not innovative, but the scores of based on how much I'm enjoying the song. Something can be completely original and adventurous, but that doesn't mean I'm going to enjoy it. *shrugs* And there's nothing wrong with being cliche. The human condition is cliche.
@theneedledrop Far from me to to question your score it was not what i was trying to do, i learn a long time ago to let go of why people enjoy the music they listen to, i just don't see *exaggerates for effect * anything good in the song. As Steven king said "Hell is Repetition."
I heard this song on the radio in Aus, and honestly thought it was by all of The Killers, not just Flowers on his own. Which kind of begs the question why he made it solo if it sounds like his whole band.
"Crossfire" might be the best track on the album. Not too crazy about the entire album. I can listen to The Killers first 2 album over and over, but Flowers by himself, although it sounds alot like The Killers, it just dosen't have the same effect.
This track is pretty much a boring, average as hell Springsteen derived song that the Killers have been trying to do for ages. It's just so average, nothing about it stands out as interesting for me. I liked the Killers like when I was 13 and I still think their first album was pretty good.
Will you review the complete album?, because pretty much what you said about this song, that's what the album is about. btw Day & Age was one of the best of 2008 IMO,
Teen dream wins.
but i kinda dug katy perry's new album, specially one song, it's name is "Not like the movies", that's just my taste, but then again i really despise some songs on it like "Peacock" or "E.T". i give Crossfire a light 8, flamingo a decent 7, just for what it is.
Kind of a distracting background on this one. Hearing about Brandon Flowers while looking at a Flying Lotus album is like seeing a hooptie pull up in front of a tricked out Delorean. It's like 'get out of the way!'
Brandon Flowers has a great voice but he shouldn't be doing pop music with unnamed producers. The Killers' aren't solely great because of Flowers but the rest of the band's instrumentation. I'm just glad they're not actually breaking up.
¿"Some cues" from The Killers? It sounds exactly the same. I can't understand a side proyect if you're gonna sound exactly the same way. Yep, the guy actually have a great voice, but maybe can give it a different use than the one everybody already know.
I didn't notice the difference between this and The Killers.
I have builders in my house blaring it, and it's the most torturous experience I've ever had to sit through. I swear they repeat the same R&B and bubblegum pop bullshit 24/7.
great review!! i think your interpretation of the song/album in general was spot on.
