I dislike a lot of the newer puppet builds but this one is OK for me. He doesn't look as scraggly and rugged as he used to which is why I liked him, but there's just something I like about the new style. He was always a larger puppet and this one is almost too small but I'll take it if it keeps a more minor character from the 80s and early 90s in the rotation! This is one of few such older characters whose muppeteer is still alive.

Well, Abby Cadabby does seem to be more a product of "testing" than other characters have been (although the truth is, EVERYTHING put on this show was always tested by educators beforehand).

But it's not really accurate to put Elmo in that category, because he just formed naturally, without any calculation. It was only later, when he'd been around for about a decade, that they began to really turn him into a merchandising phenomenon. But he started out as just another character.
