  • This guy is wearing a dress!

  • @djschindler even if he was, are you seriously saying thats the most important thing you took from this video?

  • can I play the root note with my thumb a la jimi hendrix?

  • One of THE best teachers out here! Thanks for sharing Justin!!

  • good guitarist !!

  • Thank you Justin, your free lessons have really improved my musical abilities and keep me interested in learning more. much appriciated.

  • Thank you, Justin. Great stuff.

  • this is a truly responsible musician. and the community (based on views) truly appreciates.

  • haha i like this beat haha

  • i hate you

  • tyx....

  • Thanks. Good video!

  • This guy has entirely free learning website

  • i'm so confused, there is no D in the D9 and no A in the A9....what is going on!!!???

  • The D7(9) chord you play is a conspiracy driven by jazz lobby in order to take down my 3rd finger, by I WILL NOT GO DOWN THAT EASILY!

  • @lfcladeira lol ....Your crazy!!!!

i just got around that chord today and i love it ...it s a sweet new weapon for me

  • jbwkvbfrj HUH? WHOA I FEEL ASLEEP AS SOON AS HE STARTED SPEAKING...

  • You're the men!!!

    Thanks a lot,from Argentina

  • i ve got the had....have you got the dock ? haddock

  • ads suck

  • Justin how many guitars do you have???? :P

  • Thanks I love it great lesson!

  • Jazz is so fucked...buts its cool

  • Justin is simply the best - fantastic player & fantastic teacher

  • @skint0n0minted playing the root with your thumb using that chord shape isnt very comfortable may i say :)

  • That A9 he describes, isn't that just the 5th string m7b5 chord he shows in JA-001?

  • @Codyyoung1234 yes it is. If you remember A9 chord is made up of the notes A,C♯,E,G,B. if you look at the last four notes of the chord you can see that they are the same notes as a C♯m7b5 ( C♯,E,G,B) and by watching the video you can see that justin is indeed playing the 5th string m7b5 chord with the root on C♯. he has just left out the low A note for ease of playing,

  • Thanks I learned something new today. I knew those shapes but was sure where they went in relation to the root.

  • veramente OK............................

  • You are very good at the guitar. You are also a very good teacher. Is there any way we could get the tabs on your lessons? Thanks again for your lessons.

  • James Blunt 10 years later ahah nice duuude thanx

  • is the a9 the same as c#min7b5?

  • just read comments down below haha never mind

  • i saw you on tv ! xD

  • awesome lesson ... thanks for sharing

  • nice

  • nice video some good ideas, thanks :)

  • Where's the A note on the A79 chord ? This chord is a D flat half dim and not A79 ... is missing the A note

  • he's probably meaning A9 implying that maybe a bass is playing the A already or something, but yeah it is a D flat half dim technically

  • He is not playing the root note. Its on the sith string he is just not playing it for the A9. The Bass player would normally have the roots covered.

  • In that case this chord is a C Sharp half dim and not D flat ... and his function is the same as A7. C sharp E G B. It' s the same thing.

  • haha, cant you here that it is steel?

  • I agree

  • it's a Maton steel strung.

  • Well.. I was going through a lot of music from the 60/70 lately together with my GF.. we/she loves EBM and some dark gothic stuff ... I love both .. satriani and a eminem and a lot of other bands.. still .. when we found out about albert king or all the songs of simon & garfunkel.. or elp.. or whatever.. we had to bow to their genius music and I (< - emphasized) think that very very very very few "bands" do something like that today... and none of the few who are .. are playing "on the radio"

  • I can beg to differ...there are ALOT of bands doing great shit. Some make it on tv and radio but most dont. The thing is back then I'm sure people thought like how you think about new music too. So give it the benefit of the doubt. People look at the 60's and seventies so good because the time has passed that we only need to talk about the GOOD music that came out then, but there was also a TON of a TERRIBLE music then too...nobody talks about that.

  • I am not talking about all the unknown bands. I am talking about "public known music".. and I can't see a lot of valuable stuff on radio and tv today... There is ALOT of shit... and TONs are maybe hidden in their garage... what "most people and their friends" listen to is just commercial meaningless overproduced garbage.

  • There sure was terrible awful music back then. But the difference is that there are a lot more terrible bands today compared to the amount of good ones. Also, the bands that are considered really good today would be average in the 60's or 70's. Mainly because people suck at playing their instruments because there are too many "short cuts" (That aren't good for you) today.

  • Well.. it is much more a C#m7b5 but he uses it in a context which "implies" the root note being an A and not the C#... which makes it in context to the A9...

I think people get confused when they first got to the 10 Jazz Chords lesson.. learning the m7b5 shape and suddenly the same thing is some 9 chord without understanding why they are what they are in the first place :)

A lot of chords can be something else too :) and it nearly always depends on the context...

  • I thought the chord that you are calling an A9 was really a C#m7b5 can you explain?

  • Some fools also dont understand hip-hop is a culture and rap is just a form of hiphop.

  • Regardless, Rap and Hip-Hop are both very basic and are based on simple music scales. I wouldn't consider them as much a form of music as I would maybe poetry.

  • Give me one classic rap song u making reference to, if u know so much about hiphop/rap

  • @Davidj501 have a look at some Kid Koala videos, you will see how the turntable really can be used as an instrument. (sorry to go off topic Justin)

  • @Davidj501 not true as a rule as there are some big exceptions. the "focus" often isn't on the the musical composition in main-stream hiphop and rap, but, making an assumption on the whole genre considering those examples would equate on making assumptions on jazz based on elevator music/ kenny G or assumptions about blues based on some dude with a guitar case by a bus bench.

check out tribe called quest, the roots and organic flow. some great music happens there.

  • @Davidj501 how not? ever tried it? it is poetry

  • Amen

  • again nknew those chord but play adom09 with the A like how you would from the 12 fret of the A string but i do the note you do on the G string on the b but im changing it to ur way because ill be able to get an extra note in but sacrifice the root

  • wait, so an A9 doesn't have an A in it?

  • I'm not sure listening to hip-hop will enlighten anyone.

  • I just love jazz. Thanks for sharing ur knowledge!!!

  • cool...another really good lesson

  • Great lesson... exactly what i was looking for. I was literally thinking "i'd love to jazz up my blues a bit". thanks!

  • couldnt have said it any better

  • it's fun.tnx ..godbless u

  • Thanks Justing you sure are going to heaven :)

  • Hey man, thanx a lot for these lessons, n your teaching style rocks.

    Josh

  • You See! These kids listen to the rap music, which gives the brain damage, with the hippin' and the hoppin' and bippin' and boppin', so they don't know what the JAZZ..... is all about!!!!!!!!

  • its like new coke, it'll be around forever.

  • Jazz IS Boppin'!

Or at least it did. :(

Now it's all post-boppin' and experimental buggery, nawh.

  • Great lesson. Thanks Justin ; )

  • Jazz is the hardest style to do but its a great sounding style... Im going through a transition from blues to jazz... Chords are hard but its worth it...

  • That D9 chord is a bitch! Great tutorial. Got sick of learning out of books, nice to have it interactive- nice one Justin.

  • Thank you Justin!!!! :-D

  • is the jazz sound something ur supposed to get accustomed to after playing it for awhile? maybe im just really not used to jazz, but it doesnt sound all that pleasing to my ear.haha.

  • I have found it that movement creates a jazz sound, not the chord or scale in and of itself...justin's playing is very smooth and clear as well, not something that will happen before months of application. Take it slow, this lesson alone is enough for a good week's study for a good student...that's why I'm on week 3 w/ this!

  • seems like you don't have any ears.

  • Doesnt mean that. Jazz is somthing that can grow on you. Not everybody has to like it anyway. To each his own.

  • Well... I think jazz is something for people which are "bored" with the basic harmonies... and for sure it is something your brain needs to learn to understand.. it is much more "head" and "knowledge" music than the blues.. which is more "stomach" and "feeling" music.. in blues you bend one note to create a feeling.. in jazz you play 6 intervals ... It is not "better" than a blues. And yes.. Jazz sounds often "wrong" to the average ears..

  • Dear Justin: so the first 9 shape you show us (w/ the unplayed root note) as A9 is the same exact fingering of what would be a C#mb5 according to your jazz 01 video -- is this correct?

  • i think ur almost right. The note which makes both chords different, would be the root note, which in this case would be an A (although he's not playing it here).

Also, if you were playing a C#mb5, you would play the 4th fret of the 1st string, which would be the G#. As there isn't a G# in A9, you can't play that note in the chord he's showing you.

Basically, they are totally differnt chords - but only if you ignore both e strings.

hope that helps (& is right)! i'm learning too

  • sorry, that reply above was supposed to be for you.

  • Your right about the root A not being included, but a C#m7b5 would include a G natural (3rd fret 1st string), not a G# (4th fret). The G natural is fine with an A9 (being the dominant 7th).

  • IT'S A TASMANIAN DEVIL! U WOMABATS

  • ITS A WOMBAT U DEVIL!

  • its a tasmanian devil lol.

  • Great stuff Justin. Thanks for the contribution.

  • this is so Helpful!! thanks Justin even if i don't know you personally!! i really appreciate your work!

  • Justin why dont you do a Funk Series?? please! I see alot of funk shapes in these jazz up your blues lessons, but a specialised funk setion would be just great! thanks so much btw for so much dedication and help.

  • OH, yeah, that's not a badger, that's a Tassie Devil that is... ya wombat!

  • Bien fait, merci for the vid, good to sit back and look at the basics. Still waitin' to see the freakin' badger though... Are people allowed to write stuff like c#m7b5 without being censored?

    :)

  • You seemed such a nice fellow at first, then you unleash that freaky badger on me ! Great videos though.

  • you know im so glad you make these videos it helps other kids like me learn stuff becasue our gay parents dont want to pay for guitar lessons , so i am glad you do these videos and keep them coming!

  • demais ! :)

  • Fala Muito

  • Words cant explain how happy i am that you made these videos.

  • awesome

  • great lesson as always. keep fighting the good fight mate.

  • awesome lesson, thanks for sharing the knowlegde buddy !!

  • Isn't the A9th chord just the same as a c#m7b5 which is the seventh chord in this key?

  • The 4th and fifth chords(high frets) are hard to get on electric guitar, because the frets are so small, is that normal? Is there another way to play these chords? thx for the lesson

  • Justin, you are the awesomest.

  • Thank you very much... even this much is helpful. Your presentation is clear and refreshingly sans-nonsense.
