I believe there were bizarre conditions inside the arena that day, with A/C blowers at one end causing a considerable headwind. The side hitting into that headwind always won, which is why the first four sets were blowouts (the teams alternating sides). In the fifth set, the Cubans did better with their advantage than the Americans (the sides switch in the middle of the fifth set), hence the victory.
I think if the US had won this match they would have been champions.

Years ago I read how frustrated Kemner was for not being able to pass one single ball through the cuban block . I had no idea it was really that bad!
