  • ken nishawa is amazing, such a showman and talent

  • @TheIrishlad12, who is Ken Nishawa???

  • Too cool. I love the Rips!

  • Oh...The Rippingtons....used to have this on video...wish it was out on dvd!!

Russ Freeman is a monster player, composer and arranger!!

  • Oh yeah this is cruisin' music on a summer night soft warm breeze on ocean blvd.!!

  • The first time I heard "The Rips" I was there biggest fan and have been since 1985 and have met all of them on many occasions. Kim is great to hang out with.

  • Sometimes I blast the Rippingtons and watch the people who walk down the street stare in contempt, but you know what? IT"S THE FUCKING RIPPINGTONS! I DON"T CARE WHAT THEY SAY RIPPINGTONS 4 LIFE, I AM DOWN TIL I DIE!This is what musical perfection sounds like, and Kenny G has no right to shittalk them whatsoever, fuck kenny G the rippingtons are 100 times better.

  • @xnightofragex you're so right...I read from Pat Metheny that some of Kenny G's songs are not actually original--that he ripped them off old compositions from earlier artists and changed them slightly..the rippingtons on the other hand were / are *innovators...just hear that positive vibe in their music...it's fresh and distinct

  • @xnightofragex People don't realise this music is best cranked These cats are the real thing............Kenny G could not hold Jeff Kashiwa's Sax strap I bet that clown can't even play the Alki Ewi 4000

  • The sax player is one of my all time favorites.... Like his style and sound!!!

  • @Landotter1, Jeff Kashiwa... awesome astissimo register!!!

  • @Snowflake2217 Yeah, My favorite song from them is actually kind of obscure, I guess, because it may have not been so popular but Earthbound is my favorite. First heard it on the Weather Channel and later, for some reason I asked a friend if he knew anything about jazz so I played it and he heard 5 seconds of it, turned it off and told me. Needless to say, an hour later, I was listening to it on CD. The rest is history! Love-it, Love-it, Love-it

  • What does KwameNewton mean by "This isn't jazz, this is smooth jazz"? It's not like there is only one kind of jazz, it has gone through many styles over the years. This group is commonly labeled as being smooth jazz or fusion jazz, not like it's a secret. I also don't understand why you keep coming back to comment on this video. If I didn't like it, I would never want to see it again. No offense meant.

I agree with SgtCrazyman, love their live versions, especially Weekend in Monaco.

  • The live version is way better than the studio version for a odd reason.

  • Love this band immensely!

  • Not to be a troll, but I don't understand why anyone would pay money to see this.

  • @KwameNewton dude, your not a troll for not liking this, only a troll for writing something stupid. if anything at all, you learned that you have NO business being on a jazz music video. its ok not to understand. you dont get it ,fine. many(and i do mean many) of us would pay top dollar to see, hear and FEEL musical perfection like these guys. beat it. you are officially banned from all real music. go back to that thumping shit i have to listen to at red lights.

  • @videovictim3 This isn't jazz; this is smooth jazz.

  • Mindblowing

Sounds kinda like the music in International Superstar Soccer Deluxe

  • Mindblowing

Reminds me of the music for International Superstar Soccer Deluxe

  • super, cool, bravo !!

  • OMG how I miss the Ripps. I live on the golden Guf Coast in Alabama, and I'm sad to believe I will never see them perform live again. I'm 52 now, and gettin' older by the minute. Thank you SPYRO GYRA for giving me this insatiable taste for modern Jazz, The Ripps only add to that unsatisfied need, that feeling of happiness, that everything in this world will be OK.

  • Awesome..

  • This may be Weather Channel music, but it is still charming. Brings back painful memories of my jazz band days in high school.

  • EL MEJOR TEMA DE THE RIPPINGTONS

  • Rippingtons makes a sound can touch our heart with his magic, I met the band in 1995 when a friend of mine who lives in Bountful-Utah sent me a cassette of 90 minutes with several songs and I face, so I tied in that wonderful balance and single Rippingtons. My name is Marcelo Lima, I live in Brazil, the city of Aracaju-se.

  • Makes me want to play my Curves Ahead album real loud. Sad though, it seems this is all over. I doubt we'll see them in London again. And this will NEVER come out on DVD. I've been waiting 15 years.

  • Was saying on another vid how the American's don't know what I consider a great jazz group - Swing Out Sister, because they're British. Well, in the UK, people don't know The Ripperton's, and if I hadn't lived in the States and dated a Rippington's fan who dragged me to a concert in Houston.... Well.....

  • Saw them in Concert when I lived in Houston, TX on a balmy summer night with my Beautiful Texas lawyer girlfriend - what an experience for a working class kid from London!!!!

  • Russ Freeman for music Czar !!!!

  • Where is the Live in LA DVD available to buy ???

  • "...classic!!!!!!!!

  • several youtube clips that all seem to be from this concert. to echo a previous poster, is this available on DVD?

  • I saw the Rippington's in the Jazz cafe, Camden, London a good few years ago. Awesome sound!!!

  • are they a british band?

  • Nope, they're from the USA. I saw them in Seattle WA in 2008 when I learned that Jeff Kashiwa (sax) is actually from Seattle too.

  • Where on earth can I get this as a DVD? or is it just VHS?

  • Thank You. Some time we`ll meet at white pounder mountain ;-)

  • great band wonderful music

  • I was very fortunate to be sitting in the front row of this actual concert. This was filmed in Ventura, California. The Rippington's are simply awesome. Their talent is unmistakable and they are one of my favorite groups of all time. I going to see them live again in Phoenix on June 6th. Go Rippington's!

  • This CD is the reason I can get through the day

  • Me too! I was surprised to see them play Gypsy Eyes. So soft and unlike their older style.

  • Their sound is just so summery itz amazing....Itz the kind of music that you can just sit outside on a beach and just relax with some Cognac and a Cigar and let your troubles and cares just sail with the wind

  • Shove it on the Cd player in the Car is the best way, keeps you with a cool head in the traffic.

  • @Captnplatnum I couldn.t have said it better AGREE 100% Perfect combo for the summer

    Wil S. A. Tx.

  • I have this cd, it's my favorite Rippington's cd, actually - but they have so many good stuff out there. A truly great band. They're a big reason why I got hooked on contemporary jazz - them and Spyro :)

  • me too :-)

  • I remember going to that concert!!!

I love Kim Stone!!!! Great bassist of all times.

Love Jeff! I use to go to all of Jeff's concerts in L.A.

Now that I live in Seattle, I hear we are neighbors..hmmmm?

Love Russ & The Ripps~~Miss seeing you all together in Concert!

  • I have seen these guys play live plenty of times and I've even seen them have an off night (once). These guys are just phenomenal and yes, they are that good live.

  • Who is able to make possible, that this wonderful and unique music gets the appreciation like in the 80's and 90's???

  • Very nice..

  • The "pan flute" is Russ Freeman on a Roland GR-1 or GR-10 guitar synthesizer. He kind of perfected it's use for live and session sets. This could be the "Live In L.A." set. It's a little different from that particular session though and it is definitely not a studio session. The horn arrangements are a little different and Steve Reid's percussion solo is not "lip syncing." Follow the sound and the action. You will see. Ditto Tony Morales' drumming. It's just a really killer performance.

  • keren coyy

  • the greatest band! saw the ripps perform at the best venue on earth, Cain Park - WOW!!!

  • My favorite Ripps song. I've watched this video many times and it sure looks live to me. The drum work matches perfectly and with the talent in this group, why would they need to mime this?

  • If you play alot of dates, it's a lot easier and alot of fans like to hear the identical version of what they've been listening to over and over on their CD's or Cassettes.

  • This and those other songs there's a video of is the same exact one as the album "Live in LA"...I know because I have the album and it sounds exactly the same as these video clips. Yep, that's Jeff Kashiwa alright!

  • Unfortunately this isn't live. Or is it Memorix? I'm shocked they mimed this!

  • Mimed?! are you kidding me? You need to get in touch with a good eye and ear doctor. Gimme your email and I'll send you the numbers of a few that are really good. They specialise in cases that have very extreme cases of bad eyesight and hearing. Goodness me!!!

  • andreg. I have this cassette since it came out. Have listened to it, hundreds of times.

This is the original studio version, verbatim.

You'd be shocked how many groups mime their so-called "live" appearances. As I watch more and more of these "live" performances on Youtube of various groups. Watch it again, watch Jeff Kashiwa (the sax player), tell me it isn't mimed. Also just where is the guy playing the pan flute at the beginning of the song? Don't get me wrong I love the Rips

  • you know, the quality of the sound and everything is so good that it's hard to believe it's live, but I believe it's live. By the way, I just noticed that russ freeman plays the pan flute on his guitar, you can tell from the movements, the amp just changed the sound effect to a pan flute. Also the sound might be off to the video just because thats how youtube works

  • jayperdu, you're right about russ playing a guitar synthesizer to replicate a pan flute. i checked the album notes for this song. However there's not one note that is different in this apparent live version, to the recorded studio version. I know they're good, are they that good?

  • this song always reminded me of another group on that label, i think it was "the yellowjackets"...

  • Rippingtons were way more creative than the Yellowjackets...of which they only have a few songs I like. The Rips have tons of em.

    Let's get Ripped!

  • These should be available to buy and download like music for ipods. I would own this. It just don't get any better.

  • I wish I could play the bongos like that!

  • i have a authentic russ freeman autograghed guitar(whie) that i won as a prize at one of their concerts. They were so hot.

  • All that talent on one stage... Gotta love 'em. Seems the younger generation is missing out on the real musical talents. Top-40 and RAP... Blows.

  • This is one of my favorite Ripps songs. It keeps you smiling. How can I comment on this? These musicians are all great!!

  • In the 80's I was a total Russ groupie. I went to all the clubs he was at in Cal. I was the she loves to watch girl for sure.

  • saw them at their "reunion tour" in san diego - humphrey's - the BEST concert ever !

  • My Dad and I were in a band together (him on Sax and I was on guitar) and we did some of that cool blending solos from guitar to sax, I borrowed it from these guys :-) My Dad has since passed, but listening to this brings back nice memories. We were playing Top 40, but I'd play this stuff 24/7 if I could. These guys are so great! too bad Omaha NE isn't open-minded enough yet. maybe someday.

  • Saw them last week in Alex., Va. Totally awesome show. It, however, appears that hey are using more and more computers than ever.

  • The Rippingtons are simply one of the greatest cont.jazz bands ever. Saw them in West Palm FL. almost ten years ago. Fantasic.

  • a great band they were taking names that night

  • one of the best jazz bands around, I've seen them 2x's live & both just awesome

  • Awesome song - I never get sick of hearing these guys! I agree with hsghsgha - this was the best Ripps lineup - I saw em in 1993 at the (now defunct) Jazz Club in Disney World. One of the best shows I've ever seen.

  • In my opinion, this was the best Rippingtons ensemble.

  • you are right I also feel the same.jeff kashiwas was there best saxophine player.wish he would not have left though he has his own group now

  • Who's Jeff with now? I'd better do a search online. I have this video on VCR, and it's the sh*T

  • I can only hope both my children, who are musicians as well, have as much fun playing as these guys seem to.

  • HAPPY MUSIC, YEAH!!! Makes you wanna jump up and do the "Snoopy Spring" dance. I miss these guys alot, wish they'd come back to 'Bama (Mobile specifically).

  • you're the best...Russ

  • Smooth Jazz At Its Best!!
