@chelseaFC514 Of course the helmets protect better. The difference is the mentality of the players. In rugby your taught from the start certain techniques that lessen the chance of injury. American footballers lead with the head as a tactic. If they used the same precautions as rugby players the concussions would be near non existent.
@pillowbugg They've tested dozens of players on sports science. The fastest they had was 19.5 mph. The slowest Ive seen was ndamukong suh at 13.5 mph. That's in pads so still impressive. To make the England Rugby 7's team you have to do at least better than 18.5mph, they've got 2 players that have gotten up around the 24mph mark. Just pointing out that rugby players arnt exactly slow.
@aztechuhs: Actually the risk of concussion is less in rugby than in American football (Incidence of concussion in contact sports: a systematic review of the evidence BRAIN INJURY, VOL. 17, NO. 10 (OCTOBER 2003), 901–917). The authors hypothesized that players that wear protective equipment may rely too heavily on the equipment, and/or the protective equipment is not properly worn. One would logically think that helmets protect better, but research shows otherwise.
Rugby is the gayest sport I have ever seen. Football=harder hits, more athletic players, and most importantly, more goes into football. Football is like a game of chess. Rugby is a grass fairy sport like soccer. Stupid europeans.
I've played both. My grandmother is from Australia. I grew up with rugby then switched to football. By the rules of the game there are violent hits in football on a regular basis. I've also player tackle football without pads and took more injuries as a result. Either sport there are big hits to be levied. But in football there is more of a chance to take a hit that you don't see coming and can't get prepared for. Just by the way the game is played. That's all. Both are tough games!!!
yeah yeah, rugby players use no pads and are tougher than nfl players......whatever. The reason they use no pads is becuase after they tackle each other they have to jump in a big pile and fuck and suck each other. Pads would just get in the way of all the gayness. Hey, its in the 2000's now so I guess that gay shit is ok.
@JoeyTortelliniFunkHH You know why pads are used in football? TheodoreRoosevelt was going to ban the sport because on average 30 players died and over 300 career ending injuries happened EACH year in college FB. The forward pass and the ability to block your opponent makes football a FAR more dangerous game then rugby.Even with pads football is more dangerous.Your more likely to small injuries in rugby (cuts, bruises, etc.)than in football but are more likely to get seriously injured in football.
you can't compare the hits in rugby to football. first off all rugby players are what, the weight of your average nfl qb while the guys that actually make the hits around 250+ pounds when they're 6 2. in rugby a 6 6 player doesn't even reach that weight. take into account those guys running at 20 miles an hour so if you were to take away the pads it would be getting to the point where guys are dying. even now plays are getting broken ribs and concussions all the time.
@soadisthebestnumber1 Check out the South African rugby team or the Samoan rugby team and check out their weights. 250 lbs is the average size of a forward in rugby, there are plenty that are much bigger as well.
When I moved to America I heard about this sport called "Football" and they would say that its the roughest sport in the world. After laughing for hours and hours I told them about a sport with no pads, no helmets, and much faster players. The next day they would say "Football looks like a chickens sport compared to this" I would smile...
These hits are good and maybe happen more often than the NFL but whats the point what's the strategy a lot of people say that football is just big guys hitting each other but that's rugby there's so much more to football
@foreverfaceroll Little does he realize, is that their shoulder pads, knee pads and helmets add a couple of inches on all sides...And take away from the awesomeness while they're at it.
@Nobama10100 i play second row rugby thank you very much, so i know all about hard hits, im saying rugby isnt about hitting the other guy as hard as possible, its about bringing him down so you can get possession. football is for guys that wanna hit someone else as hard as possible without worrying about injuries as much as ruggers do, thats why they wear pads. so if you wanna get knocked on your ass, go play football, if you wanna play a real sport, go play rugby
Rugby league boys, this is where the big boys play! Hahah! Love it! Our season is starting soon! Gona be taking and putting in some big hits! SOUTH AFRICAN STYLE!
I've never played Rugby before and am a big football fan... This stuff is sick! Football has nothing on the sheer brutality of Rugby. The NFLPA would shit itself over what they deem to be "player safety." Rugby is a man's game!
@MrConchubhair the very first tackle is perfectly legal. Infact quite a few of them would be perfectly legal in rugby. That aside, these are from rugby league where there is no wrapping law.
look up pearl city rugby... thats the team i play for in muscatine, iowa, usa. division 3 and division 2 national champs. very close to division 1 national champs, but now yet.
No point in comparing the two sports though as they are vastly different. Continuous nature of rugby means players cant be as muscle bound and have to have much higher VMA! Could the Fridge have done40 minutes non-stop - as theoretically its possible!
All round 'sportsman' though as Americans regularly talk about 'athletes' when they mean 'sportsman' youd have to say Rugby is on top as at any given time every position has to be able to catch, pass and tackle whereas AFootball doesnt
I'm not all that familiar with rugby. Why does it look like most of the time the guy with the ball just runs straight into a fucking brutal takedown? A perfect example is at 1:45. "Let's run full speed at that guy!!"
@Cerealfrog this is not rugby. its rugby league which is different to normal rugby. in rugby league its mainly played in australia and new zealand but running the ball straight at the defender is the mentality of the game. its either when i run the ball i get knocked out or i knock the defender out so thats why they run at eachother at full speed
@Cerealfrog so you can knock him out! but in theory its about gaining territory the faster you run the more ground you gain, when your within a particular range you attempt set plays which when they work may result in a try, however you could lose possesion of the ball with risky moves. therefore in terms of percentage play its better to attempt moves in opposition territory.
@Cerealfrog also sorry, at 1.45 the guy with the ball is running sideways, this makes the defence slide sideways. the guy who gets hit changes the angle, because it is easier to break the line when your running at pace against a sliding defence, he gets hit because the timing of the pass was out, the line he ran was off, and the defender anticipated his run because the pass was early. but these are attempts to break the line and not neccesarily wrong if he gains metres
that is why rugby is more brutal than football coz footballer are whimps compared...the ref is the man in the middle and he would not stand for what the soccer guys give their refs...bet the us footballers would not play rugby with out all their padding.
Half of these tackles are illegal anyway, you cant just use your shoulder you have to wrap the play up as a tackler, plus going high is normally instant yallow card and sin bin
@krunkers Rugby League - you dont have to wrap the arms - so these are all fine - some may be deemed high but thats it! Rugby League is dull in the UK (Superleague) but the skill level in the NRL is much the same as union players so its a lot more exciting as they have the ability to try more!
@ilovemyhelmet72 u fuckin high? non wrap tackles dont end careers... thats why they are legal in rugby league (the sport in this video). this is not rugby, its rugby league, normal rugby is so soft when it comes to tackling rules
Well Done foreverfaceroll! I have played both football and rugby and rugby is so much tougher and stronger, you have to have some balls to play rugby, in football you could be a massive pussy and still play... in your opinion football players, what tackle would hurt more a slide tacklle or a diving rugby tackle.... Of course its got to be the rugby tackle... RUGBY 4 LIFE
@Mormegil22 no there not illgeal. the sport in the video is RUGBY LEAGUE not rugby union. in rugby league you can shoulder charge and are lot less strict on tacking laws than union.
When it comes down to it, their both similar sports. Difference is, Rugby is nonstop, football has breaks. Football players play only a few minutes a game, which is a proven fact. ;)
@coloneldom Yeah because America has advertisements that are actually worth a shit. And by the way why don't you actually look at American football hits? Compared to those, rugby is more like a few pre-k pussies pushing each other.
I think the muppet NFL supporters here forget one thing....the rugby (league) players here get up and have to keep playing straight away, no 5 minutes for ad breaks between plays, no gay showboating after making a tackle and they ALL play "offense" and "defense". Rugby (league or union) players = men....grid iron players = prima donnas
For those debating whether Football (NFL) is better or worse than Rugby. Rugby is basically NFL without the armour. Raw speed strength and power. If you don't believe me, compare the size and speed of rugby players compared to NFL players
To add to the rugby vs NFL debate, if you put a rugby player in a minor NFL position, I bet they could adjust easy and look like theyve played for ages, and have the physical ability to mix it with the best. If you put an NFL player in a rugby team however, they couldnt cope with the skill involved, the strategy, or the physicalty (both fitness and big hits without pads). lots of times Rugby players play with broken jaws, or just pop shit back into place and keep playing, unlike NFL players.
@six6sixpounder I used to think the same but I started looking into rubgy and I can't say how untrue that is. Two COMPLETELY different sports. The taclking tech. they use would make them look like fools in the NFL. If an NFL player tried to tackle a rugby player most of their hits would be illegal. The strategy is so different. Football is chess and Rugby checkers. Conditioning wise is also completely different
@kissfansf Agree to dissagree. I moved from NZ playing league and union to USA for 3 years when I was 15, made the team easy as. My nick-name was "the train" because I ran so hard (wearing pads like that makes you feel bulletproof), when in NZ I wasnt even that great. Then I came back to NZ and had to re-learn how to play, and despite being 3 years older, was the most unfit Id been in ages. As to the strategy, well NFL plays are so thought out before hand, It doesnt take much to think them up.
@kylejkais , no . that makes it more impressive, it's the one guy with the ball against 15 angry men. he has to break the line himself, lateral pass it on, or kick it.
the other guys aren't moping around either, they're looking to position themselves where a lateral pass will get them through a hole in the defensive line.
@Kram4712 "REAL FOOTBALL" is still soccer and i have only watched american football once and it seemed rather boring to watched. Never played. Just thought i'd argue and remember most rugby players have another job ontop of their club rugby, but that was going no where and now i cba to argue.
@Kram4712 "REAL FOOTBALL" is what you call soccer, dumbass... From what you are saying I know you have never played rugby. What’s more is the fact that you think A.football involves more strategy then rugby; the coaches in A.football are the only ones thinking; in Rugby, players need to think on the spot for about 70 minutes, they don’t use coaches during the game. Don’t be so ignorant and actually bother using your brain....
Somebody please explain to me the rules of tackling in rugby. In American football, all hit's are fair except for hits to the head and horse-collaring (pulling the tackler down by the inside of his pads at the neck). Are you not allowed to hit below the waist in rugby? Do you have to wrap up? Great sport by the way.
In Rugby Union you have to use your arms to wrap up. Tackles can't be done from behind or in the air. No contact above the shoulders. Both the player who is tackled and the one who is tackling must roll away immediately after the tackle. If you intend to tackle a play and they come off the ground you can not drop them, can't tackle from an offside position. Obviously rules are made to be broken and players still perform dangerous tackles such as spear tackles etc..
Yeah people that know of league know it's rugby league, the rest of the world think it's rugby union. People who like these hits might want to join a local club and and join a union one.

@foreverfaceroll
RUGBY 4 LIFE
TheCityHalk 1 year ago
Many, many many many many of these hits are very illegal.
Mormegil22 1 year ago
@Mormegil22 no there not illgeal. the sport in the video is RUGBY LEAGUE not rugby union. in rugby league you can shoulder charge and are lot less strict on tacking laws than union.
tomslc94 1 year ago
When it comes down to it, their both similar sports. Difference is, Rugby is nonstop, football has breaks. Football players play only a few minutes a game, which is a proven fact. ;)

they have pretty butts, but nfl players are still cuter. :P

@coloneldom Yeah because America has advertisements that are actually worth a shit. And by the way why don't you actually look at American football hits? Compared to those, rugby is more like a few pre-k pussies pushing each other.
sealife12 1 year ago

If you put an NFL player in a rugby team however, they couldnt cope with the skill involved, the strategy, or the physicalty (both fitness and big hits without pads). lots of times Rugby players play with broken jaws, or just pop shit back into place and keep playing, unlike NFL players.
six6sixpounder 1 year ago
@six6sixpounder I used to think the same but I started looking into rubgy and I can't say how untrue that is. Two COMPLETELY different sports. The taclking tech. they use would make them look like fools in the NFL. If an NFL player tried to tackle a rugby player most of their hits would be illegal. The strategy is so different. Football is chess and Rugby checkers. Conditioning wise is also completely different
kissfansf 1 year ago
@kissfansf Agree to dissagree. I moved from NZ playing league and union to USA for 3 years when I was 15, made the team easy as. My nick-name was "the train" because I ran so hard (wearing pads like that makes you feel bulletproof), when in NZ I wasnt even that great. Then I came back to NZ and had to re-learn how to play, and despite being 3 years older, was the most unfit Id been in ages. As to the strategy, well NFL plays are so thought out before hand, It doesnt take much to think them up.

cant the other guys block? it seems like all they do is just mope around waiting for the ball.
kylejkais 1 year ago
@kylejkais they cant block like NFL, the idea is to create an opportunity for the ball carrier to pass..
sure contact is great fun, but the perfect play in rugby is to score a try without engaging with the opposition i.e. pass from half to try line..
easternclive 1 year ago
@kylejkais , no . that makes it more impressive, it's the one guy with the ball against 15 angry men. he has to break the line himself, lateral pass it on, or kick it.
the other guys aren't moping around either, they're looking to position themselves where a lateral pass will get them through a hole in the defensive line.
that's about it really. great game.

@Kram4712 "REAL FOOTBALL" is still soccer and i have only watched american football once and it seemed rather boring to watched. Never played. Just thought i'd argue and remember most rugby players have another job ontop of their club rugby, but that was going no where and now i cba to argue.
Kash1337 1 year ago
@Kram4712 "REAL FOOTBALL" is what you call soccer, dumbass... From what you are saying I know you have never played rugby. What’s more is the fact that you think A.football involves more strategy then rugby; the coaches in A.football are the only ones thinking; in Rugby, players need to think on the spot for about 70 minutes, they don’t use coaches during the game. Don’t be so ignorant and actually bother using your brain....

sseebbaa09 1 year ago
Somebody please explain to me the rules of tackling in rugby. In American football, all hit's are fair except for hits to the head and horse-collaring (pulling the tackler down by the inside of his pads at the neck). Are you not allowed to hit below the waist in rugby? Do you have to wrap up? Great sport by the way.
avanpeltno2fan 1 year ago
@avanpeltno2fan
Kash1337 1 year ago
yea, almost 3/4 of these are high tackles?
6eggc 1 year ago
Yeah people that know of league know it's rugby league, the rest of the world think it's rugby union. People who like these hits might want to join a local club and and join a union one.
UHtiger 1 year ago
to all those who said that this is league and not rugby...go eat shit...League is rugby...there are 3 kinds of rugby...union,league and touch
