Yeah, "selling out". It's much better to be under-appreciated, unpopular and underpaid for your whole career because some wannabe fanboys think you are "selling out" if you manage to become popular, or get a deal to do some sponsored gigs. Grow up.
There's no such thing as selling out anymore. Culture has passed that point. Plus. if your not a reactotard, you'd see that even back as early as 1984, Devo has done an extremely high profile Honda Scooter commercial, a classic you can watch right here on Youtube.
If you can accept that everything you do, or say, or think, is an INVESTMENT then you will be a lot happier chaps. Bands sell music or happiness or a feeling or whatever and music also is a product, as unpalatable as that may be. Da vinci only worked for money don't forget.
Not to be an apologist here, but I think you have to separate DEVO the band from the individuals that constitute DEVO. DEVO is - and always was - about selling out, giving in, devolution. Mark, Gerald, Bob I, Bob II, Alan - these guys were actors, playing straight-faced musicians, concocting this huge hoax. A hoax was meant to target and lampoon the hyper-corporatization of America. Even the weirdest, most rebellious aspects our culture were comodified: hence DEVO. They recognize the irony.
Man! Why you Pinheads hating on them! They are great! I think it's cool...50 years old and they still do gigs and they still have the energy...god some 40 year olds can't do that

"Selling out" is part of the joke! The spudboys are playing a prank on Nissan, AND getting paid for it!

When you all get older and have BILLS To Pay. You will understand why they "sold-out".
Would you consider a 20.00 ticket to a show "selling-out"?

I think I would have rather payed a reasonable ticket price. Can bands not make even a modest living anymore without these corporate sponsored tours?
polyex 4 years ago 3
Oh... I forgot... this is the U.S.
where 'Money Talks and Bullshit Walks' (as Bobbi Fleckman once said...)

What happened to the CORPORATE ANTHEM ?
Or is NISSAN no Cor-po-ration???
