@rjogden - Recesses in the ram is a great idea, but the up-and-down adjustability of the wedge spider would mean the ram wouldn't line up once you raise the wedge to accommodate a larger diameter log section.

Would it help to put indents into the "ram" (piston?) to match the blades of the splitting star? It looks like the principal difficulty is with the split pieces hanging up between the blades of the star. If the ram were able to travel just a little further to push the pieces out of the way of the next round, there would be a lot less wear-and-tear on the machine from all that shaking and banging around.
