I tend to blame his manager, Gordon Mills, for that huge mistake. I have all his albums and he does have some great R&B tunes on some of them. Jones grew up in Wales listening to Black and gospel music on BBC radio, and was profoundly appreciative of and influenced by it. And it shows in performances like this.

Couldn't be clearer. Tom Jones is a competent blues/rock singer who made it a lot bigger than a lot of other equally competent blues/rock singers and LIttle Richard is the originator. Just listen. Tom's verse is good, but Little Richard's verse comes right from the soul where it was born. Now on a good night Jerry Lee Lewis could match Little Richard, but that dude's crazy.
